Looks Like Frank Rivers Has Left The Team, Is A No Show For Grambling Spring Practice

D.J. Williams returns for his third season at the helm of the offense, but the Tigers appear to be absent Frank Rivers, who has split time with D.J. Williams the last two seasons.

“Frank might not be a part of this football team,â€￾ Doug Williams said. “We’ve had no contact with Frank this offseason. Even last year, when he was playing baseball, Frank didn’t miss a workout or a practice. This year, Frank has not been in the building.â€￾

Oh well. It was nice having you back in the SWAC. We will see you after 2013. :emlaugh:

Re: Looks Like Frank Rivers Has Left The Team, Is A No Show For Grambling Spring Prac

Has the guy left Grambling or just the football team to focus on playing baseball. He could have done that knowing he will not be a everyday starting QB for Grambling. :noidea:

He is still in school and is still on the baseball team.

Basically he is just playing baseball. Can't blame the kid if he don't feel like he was getting a fair shot to play QB. At least he is getting some wins on the baseball diamond.

Going to be interesting to see how Doug handles this going forward if DJ does not perform to expectation next Fall. He think he heard it this year. Let them not start well and DJ is not playing good. It will get ugly in N. La.

It appears the anti Doug brigade has gotten into poor Frank's head. :smh:  :emlaugh:

Has or hasn't? LOL.

Going to be interesting to see what happens this Fall. I will assume Gram will be better than last season. You can't get any worse by not winning any conference games. Since this is a what have you done for me lately society, if they don't come out kicking arse this year I shudder to think what Robinson stadium will look like. I want Doug to do well as I do SU. Nothing like the BC being for the West title. Got to get back that.

Has...Don't worry about Doug and Grambling they will be just fine. I expect them to come out 2nd place in the West this year. I expect them to stump a mud hole in everyone except S.U. and maybe Bama State.

The end of a dynasty???? Doug's dynasty.

Re: Looks Like Frank Rivers Has Left The Team, Is A No Show For Grambling Spring Prac

I highly doubt if Grambling folks will accept coming in second place to SU or to any team in the West for two straight seasons. If Frank is really gone from the team, the real question would be pertaining to the backup QB.
Williams is bound to get hurt at some point in the season or struggle mightily.

Re: Looks Like Frank Rivers Has Left The Team, Is A No Show For Grambling Spring Prac

If Southern U. didn't have the returning All SWAC QB, DJ would probably be the best QB in the entire SWAC. Grambling receivers will need to get better at route running and the offensive line has to and I expect will get better at pass and run blocking.

I don't know Jrock. You got more faith in Doug than I do. I am not so sure he can replicate the success he had the first go around. He won the SWAC his first year back, but if you look at that season. It was helter skelter all year for a bunch of teams including Gram. They were just less unprepared. I know all the accolades he has earned. But we see far too often that the second stint don't always go well for coaches when they return to the SAME place where they coached before. Synder is doing well at Kansas State but he really never left the building or the school, he was just hoping the young guy was ready to handle it and he couldn't. So he had to come back to the sidelines. Anyway, it's time for these young SWAC coaches to start kicking the old establishment arse. LOL.

Jrock,
Normally, you are very informative on the sports board. On what basis is DJ the 2nd best QB in the SWAC?

Isn't the kid from UAPB coming back? And the kid from PV?

You are actually on point with that assessment JayRob.

Doug is not old and I'm not sure about establishment. :emlaugh: We'll see. That is what's wrong with our microwave society today. The guy is only one year removed from a SWAC championship with a masterful coaching job where we saw his team get better week after week to come from the abyss and win it all.

He ain't old by age standards. But with the SWAC having all these 30-40 something coaches coming in at PV, TxSU, SU, Bama State, etc. the trend is being started.

Yeah society is a microwave. So Doug better get to popping. Unfortunately that is the way it is. Like I said, you have more faith in him than I do in his second stint as a head coach. He had a veteran team around DJ in his first year. Good mix of youth and vets. I also saw a few games that had nothing to do with coaching on his end but on the opposing teams end that lead to their demise. I will give him credit for winning the SCG when he came back. But I do not think he he has the same good staff as he did in the early 2000. That's what folks tend to forget when a head coach has success. Pete can attest to that. His replacement hires were not as good as the ones he lost over the years. I don't think Pete forgot football as I don't think Doug has forgotten football. But your staff has to be cohesive. We will see. I think UAPB will still be a threat this year in the West.

Re: Looks Like Frank Rivers Has Left The Team, Is A No Show For Grambling Spring Prac

PV has both quarterbacks back...the left-handed one, Smiley, had a concussion last season and missed alot of games but when he's healthy, he's right up there

Re: Looks Like Frank Rivers Has Left The Team, Is A No Show For Grambling Spring Prac

Doug went out to Cali and brought in a qb and he pretty damn good....

I think Roach, Spears, and North are at least 3 coaches that are not there (not sure if Sammy White is still there). I think it's a moot point though because everyone can be replaced with the same quality. It may be harder to replace because of where Grambling is located. On the other hand it may balance out because of who Grambling is. I'm thinking having Grambling State on a resume' is a good thing. Doug probably has the most football knowledge in the SWAC. I'm pretty sure he is not going to keep a coach around that is incompetent or a problem. I agree with your perspective that all have to be on the same page. I don't think that's a problem though.

And if that happens, Doug Williams has no one to blame but himself.

http://www.thenewsstar.com/article/20130409/SPORTS/304090328/Williams-unquestioned-leader-Tigers

D.J said he grew more through a trying 2012 season — one in which he threw two touchdowns to six interceptions and completed 47 percent of his passes — than a conference championship season in 2011 in which he threw 14 touchdowns to seven interceptions and completed 51 percent.

Rivers completed 51 percent of his passes and had a slight edge in yardage (954-930) while throwing seven touchdowns to four interceptions.

Smells like....."No matter what I do, coach gonna let his son play quarterback."

Re: Looks Like Frank Rivers Has Left The Team, Is A No Show For Grambling Spring Prac

I dont blame him. You honestly think Doug Williams wants his son to sit on the bench and not succeed? Heck nah, I wouldn't live with myself if I benched my son, no matter how sorry he is lol....

Re: Looks Like Frank Rivers Has Left The Team, Is A No Show For Grambling Spring Prac

I am sorry but I see this different from you guys. Basically Frank is acting like a lil girl. He must not have real male leadership in his life because this looks like another "if I can't have it my way I will take my ball and go home" momma taught lesson. Why quit on your team? If you are as goods as you think you are prove it and Doug will have no choice but to bench DJ. Running like a lil broad is not gonna hurt Doug Williams, but it will prove Frank ran like a broad. Put your big boy drawz on and take the ladies panties off and man up. Life is what it is. If he think what Doug is doing wait until he gets his degree and these corporate boys get hold of him. man please. Corporate America hazes you worst than anyone especially if are in it for 30 plus years.
