Problems for ASU on day 1

Alabama State quarterback Jermaine Crenshaw throws a pass during the first day of practice Tuesday afternoon at Hornet Stadium. Crenshaw is one of several players competing for the QB spot.

The Alabama State football team took the practice field for the first time Tuesday night and, as is usually the case at ASU, things didn?t go very smooth.

Things started to go awry early in the afternoon when head coach L.C. Cole learned the school had switched insurance carriers and the Hornets? practice wasn?t covered under the new insurance.

The situation was finally rectified at the last minute, allowing Cole to hold practice.

?I was a step away from putting a sign on the door and canceling practice,? Cole said. ?It?s a little bit ridiculous. I mean, the first I hear about it is late this afternoon. But we got it fixed and got to practice.?

With the insurance problem solved, the Hornets took the field at 5:30, planning on practicing until 8 p.m. However, there was a slight problem with that plan.

There was a problem with the electricity and none of the lights at Hornet Stadium were working. As a result, the Hornets knocked off a little early.

?I don?t know what happened with the electricity,? Cole said. ?I guess I?ll have to talk to someone about that tomorrow. It?s always something around here.?

The only other problem Cole had was recognizing most of the players on the field.

?I told the coaches that we?ve got to get some tape and put these guys? names on their helmets,? he said. ?We need some name tags or something.?

The players also weren?t without problems. Several of the first-year players were suffering from cramps and heat-related problems but Cole said that was to be expected.

?That?s all of the guys that didn?t come in early and work out this summer,? he said. ?There?s always some guys that need to get a little extra work.?

?I knew it was going to be intense,? said Steve Vickers, who transferred to ASU from Delta College in Stockton, Calif. ?The heat really wasn?t as bad as I thought it would be but it was still very hot.?

Overall, though, Cole and the coaches were pleased with the shape of the players.

?These guys are a little farther along than what we expected them to be,? Cole said. ?The guys that have been coming in and working out this summer were really impressive.?

Linebacker Earl Cochran, right, talks to his Alabama State defensive teammates during Tuesday afternoon's practice.

Those summer workouts were what led to ASU?s late start.

?Those guys came in and worked out so hard that we thought it would be good to start a little a later,? Cole said. ?This is the best shape we?ve ever been in this early.?

Cole credited most of the off-season hard work to the older players on the team.

?The older guys have really gotten after these young guys,? Cole said. ?They?ve even got them started on cleaning up the locker room. They know that?s one of my pet peeves and I noticed the young linebackers cleaning that up yesterday.?

Cole and the Hornets start two-a-day practices today, with a morning practice at 8 a.m. and an afternoon session at 5:30.

Why does it seem like ASU is trying to make Cole quit.

This is the 3rd event to take place that Cole didn't know about correct?

That is messed up. How can someone on the payroll not be informed of issues like this???

I just can't see ASU not informing Cole of this. He must be so focused on replacing players he lost. I am sure a memo or something was sent out.....

This doesn't look good for ASU or any HBCU....referring to our situation with the construction near practice but hey....what will be next??

August 31 prediction for ASU season opener...

ASU forgets to tell Cole that there is no money to fund the team and he has to provide the transportation to and from ALL football games??? LOL

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Sweep around your own door kid.

MH, just explain in 2 sentences or less just "If Brashears will be a trouble maker this year or not?" I mean, I will overlook the issue of you all not having insurance, lights, and names on your helmets if you could answer that one question.

Thank you in advance. :D

MH, I am truly losing hope in you. It just amazes me at how some people can alude a simple question. :smh:

Well, could you pls explain why there was no electricity for your lights on your practice field? Could you pls take a pop at that one? Huh? For me?

btw, bean
why do you have that pic of Thumbs Story in your signature. Everybody on here who has a lil football sense know that dude dropped balls all over the damn field.
:snicker:
homecoming and many more!
:lmao::lmao::lmao:

But then again, you're bean. I should not have expected you to know that.

smalltimist
:(

I know you didn't say anything about practice fields.

Sweep....around......... own....door

beyond sad,

downright smalltimist

I'm done with you kid. You don't have a clue. Go scrounge around for more newspaper articles.
:smh:

Dayum Horney!!! Trying to get a straight answer from you is like pulling teeth without using sleeping gas or anything. What? I dont understand. Is the question so simple till it's complex or something? Help me, help you.

Horney, I have given up all hope on having a meaningful conversation with you. I have now figured out that receiving a straight answer from you is about as much meaningful as U.S. peace talks with Bin Laden and his henchmen. So, I guess the only conversations that we will be having is "The Kennedy Rule" and "JW is still your coach". :(

Gary has a great attitude so far. He has the quickest release I've seen in the past couple years. Hopefully he will pick up Lil Johnny offense. Right now he looks kinda tentative.

I know when you season opener is..... I suggested that date since your school is so last minute and indecisive.

Perhaps I should define the word for those hornets that don't like to read posts.... lol

I REALLY DON'T THINK YOU SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT ANYONES PRATICE FIELD RIGHT NOW. TELL MANNING TO GO DEEP BETWEEN THE BULL DOZER AND BACK HOE.

Mach, why are you here? Did I mention anything about it being 110 degrees near that hole of yours? I know where your practice field is located and you know that that hole of yours do draw heat. I guess that is why that Arizona kid changed his mind. Figuring that he could cope with the La heat, but when that hole started heating up, your practice field felt the over-flow. *smh*

I'M SURE KNOW ONE ELSE DOES.

Why can't we talk about practice fields?? What you see at JSU is progress. We are building the Payton Complex and Academic units at the same time. I don't think many other schools can say the same.

SOME NEED IT MORE THAN OTHERS. :lmao:

A lot of people smack on trivial issues and smack on things that their school is going thru too or just went thru. Wasnt it just last year that Doug was whining about having one field? Hey, this kinda thing happens.

But the field is not an issue. I can assure you they are getting the job done.
