A Message from FAMU Interim President Beard
Dear FAMU Community,

We are deeply saddened by the news of the active shooter incident on Florida State University’s campus today. With three major college campuses in Tallahassee, we are intricately woven together in times of joy and sorrow.

Thank you for your attention to today’s FAMU alerts via text, email and our social platforms. We recognize that receiving a notification about an active threat at FSU is unnerving and unexpected. I want to assure you that at no time was the FAMU campus in imminent danger. We deeply appreciate your cooperation in steering clear of the impacted area.

I’d like to thank the FAMU Department of Public Safety who remained in constant communication with FSU and other law enforcement agencies to monitor the situation closely. Our protocols were followed, we immediately issued the campus alert, and traffic was blocked on FAMU Way to mitigate the flow of any threats from the area of concern. Thank you to the FAMU Emergency Management Team who went to assist with FSU’s emergency response center.

In light of this tragedy, FAMU will close campus on Friday, with athletic activities to resume on Saturday. Saturday classes will not meet. Faculty and staff are asked not to report, and students may use the time to review materials independently. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding. FAMU Public Safety will maintain high visibility throughout campus in the coming days to provide added assurance and support.

Additionally, we will host a campus safety town hall next week in partnership with the Student Government Association. Please stay tuned for additional details. If you are not receiving the FAMU alert system notifications, please visit https://www.famu.edu/alerts/ to download the app.

Mental health resources will be available on Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Office of Counseling Services at (850) 599-3145. The Office of Counseling Services is located at 1735 Althea Gibson Way CASS Building, Suite 304, Tallahassee, FL 32307.

Employees are encouraged to seek assistance through the Employee Assistance Program. Please call Human Resources at 850-599-3611.

Your safety and well-being are always our top priorities. Every decision we make is guided by our commitment to protect you. Thank you for your continued trust and vigilance. FAMU stands in solidarity with Florida State during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Timothy Beard, Ph.D.
Interim President

I haven't heard anymore about the shooting this week. Was there a reason why the guy shot the people?
