HIV-positive man who infected 17 women sentenced to 178 years

A man convicted of deliberately exposing 17 women to HIV was sentenced yesterday to 178 years in prison.

Anthony Whitfield, 32, of Lacey was found guilty last month on 17 counts of first-degree assault with sexual motivation, two counts of witness tampering and three counts of violating a court protection order. Whitfield reportedly was infected with HIV while serving a prison term in Oklahoma in the 1990s.

Five women cited in the case have tested positive for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, and a sixth has developed AIDS. Health authorities said as many as 170 people may have been exposed to the virus, including subsequent partners of women with whom he slept.

Robert Richardson II of Lawrence apologized for his actions at his sentencing yesterday, but he said his behavior was unethical and not criminal. The 30-year-old said jail time will do ``more harm than good.''

Richardson was found guilty last month of having unprotected sex in the past year with three women and not telling them he was HIV-positive. He was acquitted of exposing a fourth woman because jurors did not feel there was enough evidence.

Defense attorneys said Richardson believed it was physically impossible for the women to catch HIV from him.

I totally agree, and I think it also goes both ways with both genders. A former girlfriend of mine got really ticked at me when I went to the store to buy condoms. I simply told her, "no glove, no love." I asked her to produce a report saying she was free of any STDs but she couldn't. Everyone should make sure they are STD free before having sex with anyone. Women, if you are unsure if a man you're gonna have sex with has an STD, DEMAND that he wear a condom. Men, if you are unsure if a woman you're gonna have sex with has an STD, WEAR A CONDOM. Either use protection, or abstain.
 
I could debate how my a member of my fam got HIV all day. He will still say the same thing, he's bisexual, so he could gotten it from a woman or a man. Or in the hospital as a child. My point to him and to younger cousins, everyday, all day....get yourself tested and protect yourself.

I would say most people don't know they have the virus-regardless of whom they may have contracted it from-BECAUSE THEY HAVE NOT BEEN TESTED!!!! To me it's plain and simple, to say to someone else, you don't look like you have it, so I can trust you....this where we go wrong.
 
My sister died 11 years ago, at the age of 40, from the complications of AIDS. Her husband died 6 months before. Both were infected when they married. She did not know whether she contracted the disease through sex or drug use. The eldest of her 5 children was 16 at the time. Her fourth child - born after was infected and given up for adoption - we just found 2 years ago. I was in the L&D room when he was born. I saw him for 5 minutes and they whisked him away. We had assumed he was dead. He has a slight learning disability, but is otherwise perfectly normal; no trace of the virus anywhere. He is named after me and looks more like me than my own son does. The last child - also a son - was born about after she was 18 months after she was released from prison. [Yes, I could tell you a VERY
long story.] He was also given up for adoption, but we don't know of his whereabouts.

I guess my point here is that we all miss her. There have been all kinds of advances in research and treatment since she was diagnosed some 21 years ago. She was quite the guinea pig. We would like to think that some of the lessons learned through her experiences have helped others who have contracted the disease to live longer and fuller lives.

Snake, I am a DEFENSE COUNSEL, not a prosecutor! I defend rascals, not put them away. :emlaugh:

I know about only 2 cases in EBR where there were convictions...one was a habital offender so he got 5 years added to his sentence from another cases (burglary and drug trafficking) and the other one was a woman and she got some time, but it was suspended and she was put on probation. Those two cases were in the media; otherwise, I don't know about the criminal cases in adult court. I represent CHIRRENS who commit crimes. :shame:

I see Trina posted that case up in Seattle! WOW! :eek: He deserves every day of those 178 years! :tup:

  1. Husband/boyfriend was bisexual, infected and did not disclose their orientation or status.
  2. Husband/boyfriend was IV drug user and didn't know they had HIV/AIDS.
  3. Woman was an IV drug user and became infected when using a dirty needle.
Does it really matter HOW? I think not. What really matters is when someone is infected, KNOWS they are infected and has sex with a person without disclosing their status. It matters and it is a CRIMINAL ACT.

When my sister told us she had HIV, my parents asked her was she still dating, and she said yes, and immediately my dad told her that she better tell people, and she said she was.

Well this past Thanksgiving my dad put her to the test, she bought her boyfriend home with her, and after the introductions, my dad asked him "do you know that my daughter has HIV?" the guy said yes, and my dad said OK, what's happening?

So yes, if I knew somebody close to me had it, and didn't tell the person their dealing with that they had it, I would step in and tell them. As usual, my dad has set an example within our family, that I will follow. If my dad can put my sisters boyfriend on notice, who is a friend that I can't do the same.

Im Back Folks.......There are differents ways that one becomes infected of course......The Whole "DownLow" mess is not your main means of infection.....the Majority of infections lately have manifest through IV Drug Users.....and Becoming infected are Middle-Age Adults...Ages 27-57....I rarely see people younger than 25...I know that there are many scenarios that can take place.....Folks you just cant focus of 1 group of people... This disease covers every sexually preferenced group period.....
Blacks are disproportionately affected based on ignorance and taboo....Just not willing to talk about this problem......My God If way could get these So Called Christians and Churches to be more on the fore front on this....What a difference this could make.....But Sex and HIV.....HELL even Diabetes isnt even talked about...........Time for Folks to wake up and Accept whats happening....Make a change by EDUCATION.........Others as well as ourselves................

Another way women contract HIV is from men who have served time in prison.

My former law partner is a premiere defense attorney and he told me in 1985 NOT to have sex with men who have been to jail for a year or more. He said they are NOT homosexual, but they have sex with each other and that the HIV/AIDS status of men in prison is ASTRONOMICAL.

One of my clients, who is in jail right now, is HIV+ and she got it from her man that got it while he was doing 6 years for burglaries and aggravated battery.

I don't know what is happening in your neck of the woods but here in St. Louis, many college educated and working class women are dating brothers and moving them in who have spent significant time in jail. When meeting folks, I ask in casual non-judgemental conversation if they have ever or do date men who have spent time in jail. If they answer yes, I run like hell.
 
We Also conduct HIV Tests in local prisons....Inmates are tested during entry......Men who are positive of course are seperated from the others.....thats because as nasty as it may seem to us......Homosexual activity is a normal occurence in Prison.....I say....u know these dudes are going to have sex regardless...They are human....Sex Education needs to be taught in there...I know u cant promote Condoms....contribands of course....but its really outta control....

Really good info. Please keep it coming. My father is a superintendant at a juvenile facility here and boys as young as 11-14 are in there trying to rape each other. And it is not that rare.

I understand that all women aren?t becoming HIV infected by bi-sexual brothers, but I still ain?t supporting them cowards. No if ands or buts about it, if you sleep with another man then sleep with your wife/girl friend you are a punk. I can?t speak for everyone, but I can honestly say if some cat did that to my sister or daughter (If I had one) that punk would be swimming with the fishes. Now that is a fact. It?s like my pops always told me and I?m going to raise my son with the same belief (If I ever have one) that sometimes you can let stuff slide, sometimes you don?t have a choice but to kick a persons azz!!!

Very good info. To many times we want to point the finger at "that group over there" when we need to be mindful of those right there in our midst.
 
Me....Being a Young Christian Man here......Church is the focal point in the Black Community...This is such a great tool for Education and/or Prevention........Faith-Based Initiatives have been put in place in Baton Rouge....however, not visibly Implemented....
