Labor Day Classic to end?

Blu Panther

The name says it all
I see Rice and UH will join the same conference and they will probably move their game also from Labor Day to mid-point.

I think PV and TSU needs to do that also. Play that game in mid-September or so. It won't dilute the game because both teams are still early in their schedule.

Playing a conference opponent out the gate is a risk. Plus, the game becomes even more marketable if both teams enter with 2-0 records. Similar to basketball.

I like the timing of the event now but as for competition reasons, 1 loss seriously puts you out there. PV is slowly coming back and a loss won't hurt as much but imagine if PV hands TSU an L in the oepning game. TSU's season is downhill before it starts from the fan's standpoint.

They've been lucky that the game has been one-sided for a few years. For a half, we came close to shutting the doors on Bill Thomas. Sorry about that for playing with your emotions.

I disagree!!! I don't know if you can recall the days prior to the classic, but no one attended the games. I think that the universities need to do a better job of marketing the game. I would hope that a TSU/PV could one day become as big as a SU/GSU game. Houstonians (black) are funny like that, they will only support proven winners. This is why, we are able to draw 30,000 + at the beginning of the season, because we are all winners at that point.

WHo was president the last time PV was 2-0. Keep on Labor Day. The Holiday weekend is a good time to have it and since it is at begining nobody is a loser yet (as Bam Bam stated) If it was moved, then move it to the last game of the season, like the weekend before thanksgiving.

I would support this based on two reasons.

1)Unless the both Prairie View A & M and Texas Southern create a board to strategical plan and organize the events surrounding a true Labor Day Classic, it will continue to be suspended in in mediocrity in the current form.

2)I think it naturally provides both institutions with the ability to add another revenue generating game the weekend of the Labor Day.

I never said moved to the end...take it back a few weeks. Schedule a cream puff or two and then start the game.

That game has been marketed decently....but how many time scan say this will be the year for the Panthers.

It use to be the last game of the season (week before thanksgiving) and it was attended very poorly. I like it being the the first game of the year. I think that both schools should get together to promote it together and stop alternating the promotion of it. Until a few years ago the Rice/UH game was their last game when they were in the old SWC and it was poorly attended too. Pushing this game back a few weeks won't have the same Classic feel to it. Having other events promoted with it will help it acheive more people attending it.

Americas 4th largest city only getting 30,000 for a RIVAL game at the BEGINNING of the season between to schools that basically in the same city....

but everything should move to Houston .....

Miles and Stillman pull in more than that.

I think it will be most successful on Labor Day weekend. Otherwise, the fan apathy kicks in and no one wants to go to the game. That apathy kicks in very early for both of these teams.

bp,
PV won't be 2-0 any time soon.

The game used to be the last one of the year for both of us and it showed no promise at that time. Hence the decision to move it to the first one of the season (when the potential of both was still in doubt). No one wanted to see a 1-9 PV vs a 3-7 TSU.

Making the game the 2nd/3rd/4th of the season would certainly add some "fiyah" (sorry Fiyah) to the game and it's capacity potential. A 2-0 or 3-0 PV vs a 2-0 or 3-0 TSU would draw if marketed correctly.

However, PV (we) must hold up our end of the bargain. And we're certainly moving in the WRONG direction currently. Hopefully that'll change soon. (along w/ TSU's coaching ills)

Dahill....B-ham ain't Houston....

for the past 7 years, the game has been in locations less than desirable. Yes, Reliant Stadium is fancy but your forced to pay $7 to park in addition to a $15 ticket. Your out $22 bucks before kickoff. The better crowds were drawn when the game was outdoors.

I doubt Miles and Stillman are charging that much.

Jag.....you doubted that we would be a force in hoops also. We're also playing for the titles in volleyball and soccer. You all didn't even qualify for the tournaments. So much for fancy locker rooms.

$22 is not bad for any college sporting event. I think 30K is a great crowd for this game. The attendance would definitely decrease if the game were moved outdoors...especially if it is raining...when has the game ever drawn better outdoors?

Football and basketball are totally different...budgets differ by the millions and costs are totally different....you won't be a force anytime soon.

Legion Field you are going to pay 5 dollars to park (If you make it to the stadium early enough) and around 10 if you have to park in someones yard and you will NEVER see tickets for $15... they are going to be 25. AAMU home game tickets are more than $15. I will be at the soccer field to check out the PV and AAMU game tommorow... I dont even have to go to the volleyball tournament... its a given.

That's what they see now, but just don't know it. There are many end of the season rivaly games where the W-L record don't really matter.

For the last home game at Southern, I paid $10 to park and $22 for the ticket. How cheap are Houstonians????

I think the big thing here is promotion. The promotion should be taken to a whole new level. It should be a full effort by BOTH schools every year. THis game has to be bigger than the won-lost records of the teams.

True!! See reason #1

Well, first of all, let me say that I agree 100% with bam Bam.

Now when both teams are competitive again, then maybe it would be time to think about moving the game back to the end of the season. But with the state that both teams are in right now, no.....:smh: leave it alone. I am not sure that this mid-season or mid September thing will work either.

At this point in time, I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Now, when I say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" I am talking about scheduling wise. There are a lot of other things about the LDC that needs to be fixed, but thats :topic: and a whole nother thread.

TSU/BAMA,

You know I had to disagree. The Labor Day Classic is broke. So why not try something else to see if it will work, better? It is not drawing a significant amount of fans compared to other HBCU "Classics" played against rival schools with poor records or with outcome generally preconveived, nor compared to another "Classic" played in the state with the outcome generally preconceived.

It is difficult to imagine that if you move the game to the second or third weekend in September and still call it some "Classic" i.e. Texas Black College Hall of Fame Classic after Prairie View A & M University has played Paul Quinn College (In a newly rented 25,000 seat home stadium pay - day) and Texas Southern has played Howard University (In a Labor Day Classic - payday) and both are coming in the game 1-0 or 2-0 that the game could do any worse. Again we are not suggesting the game be moved to October or November.

Are you really suggesting that if you move the Prairie View A & M University versus Texas Southern University game to the second or third weekend in September that even if both teams where 0-1 or 0-2 that the game would not draw 20,000 or 25,000 people concidering they would do the same type marketing they are doing now for the event?

As you admitted above, it is painfully obvious that this game is not about the competition on the field at this point in time (So the fans are not coming to see that) and I doubt very seriously that it is about Labor Day Weekend. The bands are still going to preform at halftime whether the game is played on Labor Day Weekend or on the second or third weekend in September.

Example:
Texas Southern plays a game against Mississippi Valley State and draws 4,000 people. Two years later they call the game against Mississippi Valley State (losing record) the George Foreman Classic and they draw 20,000. Boy, it is something about that word "Classic".

Yep, thats exactly what I am suggesting. Sorry, but thats just the way I feel.

Well, I see your point. But if the fans are going to come anyway for all the reasons you suggested (half-time show or whatever), then why didn't they come when the game was played at the end of the season?

Boy, it is something about that word "Classic".

I feel you on that.

That is interesting!! Well, there is only one real way to find out isn't there?

Even you must admit. There is a huge difference in following your team after one or two home games and a record of 0-1, 0-2, 1-1, 1-0, or 2-0 versus following your team after four or five home games along with a road game or two thrown in, especially if the team as a substancial losing season record i.e. 1-8, 1-9, 2-8, 2-9, 3-7, or 3-8.

I am not sure about Texas Southern, but I am aware that the band at Prairie View A & M University attention as change since the the time the game was played back then. Also the popularity of the HBCU band in general has significantly changed since that period of time. Was it or was it not called a "Classic" when it was played at the end of the season?

I feel you on that.

Cool!!

There was a differance with that game because it was promoted with a lot of high schools, middle schools and football sports associations around the city. The ticket prices were extremely discounted and even given away to get people to that game. Not to exclude the promotion of Willowridge and Southwest Dekalb High School bands doing the halftime shows. That by itself probably brought 1/3 of the attendence to the game.

TSU survived w/o the Labor Day Classic in 1990..they opened the season against Hampton and beat them easily and drew a good crowd so there's life beyond the LDC.

Dahill.....I looked at your scores..you struggled against tennessee State while we swept them.

At SU...you all are used to that since that's alot of folks only avenue to watch a decent college football game. They'll pay. Give a brotha options and watch what happens.
