Labor Day Classic Postponed

Houston, Texas- Texas Southern University and Prairie View A&M University announced that the Labor Day Classic football game scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 3 at Reliant Stadium has been postponed. The game was postponed in respect for the displaced victims of Hurricane Katrina.

FEMA is using Reliant Park as a shelter for the victims left homeless from the storm, and all of Reliant?s resources are being used to help the people in need.

?We understand and sympathize with the victims of Hurricane Katrina,? said Alois Blackwell, TSU Athletic Director. ?We believe that it is only right that we postpone the game.?

?Our prayers go out to each and every family involved. We have student-athletes who were affected by the Hurricane, so we definitely have a personal connection to this tragedy, said Charles McClelland, PVAMU Athletic Director. ?We feel that rescheduling the game was the right thing to do.?

Both universities are now working out the details of finding a new location and date for the game.

Tickets purchased for this weekend?s classic will be honored on the rescheduled date.

Well it's good to know they will still play the game :)

Just got off the phone with our Athletic Director. The game will be rescheduled in November (not during Thanksgiving weekend).

I totally agree.

What they should do is have the PV/TSU game and the Grambling/SU game at Reliant, one in the afternoon and one at night with fundraising activities surrounding it for Hurricane Katrina during Thanksgiving Weekend.

So now they are gonna let two games on the field before the Texans play on Sunday.

This is BULL SH@T! The decision to cancel the game should have been made earlier in the week. Just move the GOT D game to Rice Stadium on Sunday. Dang, it ain't that hard!

if Cleb's assesment is right...the game WON'T be played in November because Thanksgiving weekend is the last weekend in November..December 3 is the only time...

as for Rice Stadium....it was an option but unless you were at the meeting, we just don't know what happened to cause it to break down....

basically, unless TSU and PV has decent seasons...a late season football game won't be a draw...that's why it was moved to Labor Day....it will be a pain the ass to get the crowd back and then you HOPE they hold on to their tickets for 3 months...

Lil J,

Rice University does not have any obligation to Prairie View A & M University and Texas Southern University to host a Labor Day Classic. Under the current circumstance it should obvious by now that politics play a greater role in nation then doing what makes sense many times.

There were events that took place after the University of Houston and Oregon at Reliant Stadium that I rather not document on this board, because they are truly of a sensitive matter. I can honestly, state that there was a confluence of circumstances well out of the hand of our leadership that force this decision and with all that I know, it was truly the best decision.

As, I stated when they original post was made in regard the Bayou Classic being played in the New Orleans. I stated then, if the storm is anything like they were predicting that people do not have any idea how this will effect events. This story is just beginning.

God Bless our Souls!!

Shaking My Head!!

Frustrated!!

What happened at after the U of H game? I have not heard anything.

:shh: Everything that happens at Reliant Park will not be released to the public! There are situations that happened in The Louisiana Superdome as well as other outlying areas won't be released to the public because of the graphic nature. :scared:

The info. I received came from a friend who works at Reliant Park!

TSU, Prairie View postpone matchup
Focus at Reliant should remain on post-Katrina relief, school officials say

With Reliant Park being used as a shelter for Hurricane Katrina victims, officials from Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M postponed tonight's game at Reliant Stadium.

"We felt that efforts of Reliant Stadium and the resources of this entire city needed to be focused on that relief effort versus pulling those people off the relief effort of the evacuees and staffing the game," said Prairie View A&M athletic director Charles McClelland. "And we felt at this point in time that the focus needed to be on the hurricane victims and making sure that they're taken care of."

Approximately 18,000 hurricane evacuees are being housed at the Reliant Astrodome and Reliant Center.

No makeup date for the matchup between Southwestern Athletic Conference rivals has been chosen, but Nov. 26 is being considered.

"There are a couple of things that we need to work out in regards to the actual location and time," said TSU athletic director Alois Blackwell.

Tickets purchased for this weekend's game will be honored on the rescheduled date.

McClelland said several alternate sites were explored in Houston for this weekend, but in each instance, personnel from those facilities already had been committed to activities related to the housing and care of hurricane evacuees.

Rice Stadium and the University of Houston's Robertson Stadium were among those considered, but they were nixed for other reasons, McClelland said.

"Because their home games start (later this month), they were not able to have their facilities ready," he said. "Their facilities are not ready, so we would have had tremendous issues such as no concessions, no telephone capabilities, things of that nature, that just hadn't been set up yet because they're not in season right now with their stadiums."

Rice's home opener is Sept. 24 against Navy, and UH's first game at Robertson is next Saturday against Sam Houston State.

Staying focused on this weekend's game was tougher than normal, especially for TSU's Stacey Thomas and Tyrone Reed, who are from New Orleans.

Neither has received word about the condition of many family members and friends since the hurricane made landfall Monday.

Thomas, a senior strong safety, said he has spoken to an uncle who safely made it out of New Orleans on Thursday. Thomas also knows of two relatives who made it to safety in Baton Rouge, La.

"Every time I watch the news, it's kind of hard," Thomas said. "I see everything I grew up around, people I grew up with still stuck back in New Orleans."

Thomas said he hasn't heard of any friends who have been severely injured or lost their lives.

"I have an aunt who had to swim just to get to a bridge to get saved," Thomas said. "She said in the process, she saw a body floating."

Reed, a senior wide receiver, said he hasn't heard from members of his family since Sunday.

"You need to hear something, you need to hear something," Reed said. "I've tried to get through to them, but every (area code) 504 number is down and not working."

Reed said he has "15 or 20" family members whom he's worried about.

Tsk tsk my ass!!!! (yeah I said it)

Ralph you damn well that Kevin Manns (SID @ Southern) sent out an official press release on August 30th (Tuesday). The game was orginally scheduled to be played on September 3rd (Saturday). If you ask me that was more than enough time for word to get out that the game was cancelled considering the circumstances. If you are trying tell us that there were still McNeese fans who came from out of town thinking that a game was going to be played then....:lmao: They are some dumb asses! (yeah, I said it)

On a serious note, I found it amazing how those McNeese fans *****ed and moaned about SU making the decision not to play the game, but when when word got out that LSU, Tulane, Nicholls, Southeastern, and Southern Miss informed the public that they would not play its games, the public (including McNeese fans) felt it was "the right thing to do."

So I will ask you the same question you asked someone else on another thread. "Guess that's not racial huh?"
