MPS skips Cole for Jeff Davis job; Wiggins named new Vols football coach

The Montgomery County Board of Education on Monday approved the hiring of Vincent Wiggins as the new head football coach at Jeff Davis High.

Wiggins, who coached defensive backs at Central-Phenix City, was approved for the job after the school formed a second committee to search for a candidate, according to Lewis Washington, Montgomery Public Schools assistant superintendent of instructional support.

"It's a very exciting time for me," Wiggins said. "I think JD is a place with a lot of tradition. There's a lot of talent there. We have our work cut out for us, but it can be done. We're going to get it done. We're going to win."

The process that led to Wiggins' hiring was a bit unusual.

A committee formed early in the summer and consisting of four central office administrators selected L.C. Cole for the position in June.
 
The new principal made this decision. LC is in the running for the BTW job in Tuskegee.

Yep! something sinister has happened. They let a new Principal come in to JD and let that
Principal have the influence in the 2nd round of picks for the job. I was told that-that same
Principal stopped the JD band from practicing yesterday at 5:30pm while they had been
practicing from 3pm-7pm. I think they have another "Joe Clarke" on the prowl at JD along
with that "little man" you so well described.

Her name is Mrs. Fountain and was the Head Principal at Lanier last year where LC used to be the Head Coach. I think Lewis Washington was the HP at Lanier when LC was there, if I'm not mistaking, but to answer your question, I'm not aware of whether she's an ASU grad, but her name is pretty well known around the city. I think her first name is Cheryl.

Also, the JD dance team was pissed-off, because they paid around $400.00 for a summer camp and they can't get in the practice time now to properly compete. I was also told that the Principal made the band members leave so she could have a talk with the band director. She could have let the band members continue practicing in group session and she could have continued her conversation with the director without disruption.
