Kobe a keeper; Shaq expendable

The key here is competitive basketball. You can't possibly compare the wear you get playing a year in the NBA(including playoffs) to playing a year in college.
 



I can't believe what I am reading today. Shaq is the best agile big man in the league today. I have seen him make moves that you wouldn't even imagine him making. I talked to a fellow Gramblinite who holds a front office position of the New York Knicks and he told me that he would keep Shaq over Kobe. He would take five Shaqs.

This isn't abotu Shaq. This is about assuming that just because Kobe is 25, he has an infinite number of years left and he hasn't reached his peak yet. Based on the number of years he's played, we can't assume either of those things. I'm willing to estimate that right now, Kobe at 25 has as much mileage as Jordan had when he was 30.

Well some look at Kobe and are blinded by the fact that he's 25. All I'm saying is that in his case, he's logged a bunch of games on those 25 y/o legs. That's somthing that could become a factor in the not too distant future.
 
He skipped 2 or 3 years of college (comparing him to Magic and Jordan)...you can say that amounted to 89 pro games per year (got swept out of the playoffs 1st 2 years) compared to 36-40 college games. He maybe had 100 more games under his belt than if he had gone to college...basically he's 26 instead of 25, according to your logic.

So you're saying the wear and tear you get from 30 games of college is the equivilant to what you'd get in 30 pro games? Your body breaks down much faster in the pros because its so much more physical.

But it is not that much different because of the other responsibilities of college. In pro you have one thing to do...and that's be a good basketball player. In college you have to be a student (stressful for me) and then be dedicated to basketball. Also, college kids still play year-round.

I guarantee college isn't nearly as stressful as playing basketball full time. And even some pro-players play full time, Kobe played in the summer leagues his first couple of years in the league. The point is due to the success of the Lakers, Kobe has more wear on his body than your average 25 y/o pro. That's something Kupchak should consider before he mortgages the future on him.
 
But you are making it seem as though he has the body of a 30 year old, when that can't be the case. He probably has taken the physical beating of a player who's been in the league a year or 2 more than the average 25 year old, at worst.

I have said nothing about whether Kobe or Shaq would be my choice, but I am defending the age factor for Kobe because JSU/99 is not making much of a point.

But I agree that the easy choice would be to pick Shaq over Kobe because NO ONE has a dominant center of his caliber. Now if the choice is "who do you sign long term while keeping both players?" the answer is obvious...sign Kobe for the 7-9 years and Shaq for maybe 3.

5. The only way SHAQ stay's is to put MAGIC in the GM position. Right now, SHAQ knows NOBODY pulling the strings -- GM & OWNER-- are in his corner. He ain't gonna sit for that. Kupchak dumb arse took a managable situation and made it impossiable. :shame:

BTW: Like I said --Kobe my boy --- but if he leaves, I could go after a Steve Franchise, T-MAC, V-Carter, etc. SHAQ leaves, WHO YOU GONNA GO AFTER that MAKES ANY DIFFERENCE............ NO BRAINER --SHAQ. :nod: :nod:

The point is that Kobe's legs have more mileage than a normal 25 y/o would coming out of college. People tend think of a 25 y/o Kobe the same way they would've a 25 y/o Michael Jordan, a young guy with an unlimited upside. but since Kobe already has 8 years in the league with several deep playoff runs, how much better can he really get? There's a chance that he has less games ahead of him than he has behind him. Since Kobe was in the first wave of guys to jump straight to the pros, most people are overlooking this factor.
 
After reading most of the post, it seems that most people say that they will keep Shaq over Kobe. But, I think that Shaq is on the decline. Kobe is still developing with a tremendous upside. By the names that Kobe is being called in this tread it seems that most believe that all the Laker problems were because of Kobe, but Shaq caused a lot of those problems complaining about not being getting the ball. A lot of teams knew how to stop the Lakers this year and it was not to double Shaq but to triple Kobe which is exactly what Detroit did. Shaq is going to score because he is so much bigger than everybody else, but he isn't going win those clutch games for you. Shaq game is totally limited to around the basket. You push him from the blocks late in the game he can't score. And free throws are a total handicap.
 
Shaq on the decline is STILL the most UNSTOPPABLE FORCE in the NBA.

Shaq easily should be the focal point of the Laker offense. It's what's BEST for L.A. Too bad Buss doesn't see that. L.A. ain't winning nothing else without Shaq.
 
Honestly, I don't think anybody goes anywhere........

Once the Lakers hire Rudy T as their coach, I think Payton will opt to stay, mainly because Phil Jackson is gone (and the triangle offense). I think Malone stays if he's healthy. I think Shaq stays because of Rudy's success with Hakeem Olajuwon. I also think Shaq knows that Rudy's offense is going through him (Shaq) anyway.... And I don't really think Shaq wants out of L.A.

And I don't think Kobe leaves either... Nobody else can pay him what the Lakers can re-sign him for. And the Lakers are his best shot at getting back to the Finals......

And I think Rudy T. will 'call em out', saying "Gimme two years and if we don't win a Championship, I'll quit". I think Rudy T. might be the 'glue' that keeps 'em together........

I think Fisher, Fox, George and the others all stay too....

Basically, I think the entire team stays, especially becausse they have to know that they were one or two INJURIES away from really competing in the Finals. A healthy Malone and Horace Grant.....who knows how it may've turned out...... I also don't think their PRIDE is gunna let the pundits 'win' by saying that they were a 'flash' in the pan, and couldn't win the big one...

I think they come-back BETTER next year.....

That's what I think, and I don't care if you don't like it.... :D:D

And Shaq already didn't like Kobe to begin with. Tried to keep that under wraps. If both of them are back, I don't see him trying to pretend anymore.

This and the fact that SHAQ DRIVES THIS TEAM is what people don't understand.

SHAQ stay's this year, KOBE gonna explode under the pressure. It will all be on him. No more support from SHAQ. :eek:
