Kupchak also knows that that Lakers control this situation. He knows that if any team is going to trade for Shaq, they would have to give up dayum near every quality player they have just to get him (primariy due to salary cap reasons). Secondly, Shaq has the right to opt out of his contract after next year. Even if he is traded, there is no guaurantee that Shaq will stay. And by then he will be 33 years old. And no team is going to max him out salary wise, and if they do, they are taking a hell of a chance. He has struggled to stay healthy for the last 3 years.

If Shaq can't be traded this year, he is going to have to suck it up and stay another year with the Lakers and then opt out. And if he wants to attract other teams in free agency the following year, he has to play well and stay healthy. He will be playing for a contract. Of course in doing this, the Lakers will benefit.

BTW - Let it be known that I am not a Kupchak supporter. Never have been.
 
And other thing...you all can forget about Magic becoming the GM. That is a full time job that will take him away from running his other business operations.

just like was said earlier in this post, Kobe has had the benefit of playing with a center like Shaq, who usually demands double teaming. With no Shaq, then defenses could concentrate more on Kobe (see the just completed NBA Finals to see the results of that)

Yeah right.............Kupchak and the LAKERS are in control of a person that don't want to be there, and don't care what they think now. As far as maxing out ---- SHAQ has collected over 200 million since he has been in the NBA. Now it a matter of making 60 million over 4 instead of 120 million over 7.

DUDE .......... this is going to be a long year for the LAKERS now. I'll gurantee you everytime something go wrong, SHAQ is goning to say --- TALK TO THE CAPTAIN. Ain't no mo UNITED FRONT for them. KOBE, Kupchak, and BUSS are on there own. Shaq might sit another year in LA, take his 30 million for next year, and then leave them high and dry.

Kobe is the future....that's the bottom line. Shaq will be back because he wants to win. The Lakers offer him the best chance of winning soon. Magic is on record saying that Kobe ain't going know where. I didn't hear him say that about Shaq.

Hell, when/if he leaves the Lakers will have the cap room to get a decent center. Chicago proved that during the Jordan era, and Detroit proved that again this year. All you need is a decent center.

Knegrow please!!!! Unlike those players you mentioned, Kobe is a difference maker. It is because of Kobe and Kobe alone that the Lakers were able to get the 2nd seed in the West. If T-Mac was anything like Kobe, Orlando wouldn't entertain offers to trade him.

Dude, was Shaq anywhere to be found when Kobe hit that buzzer beater against Portland (with a defender right in his face) in the last game of the regular season to send it into overtime? Was Shaq anywhere to be found when Kobe hit the game winning shot in to send it to double overtime?

Like I said...its because of Kobe, the Lakers got the 2 seed in the West. Its because of Kobe, the Lakers got a chance to even play a 5th game in the finals.

damn, it's one thing if you like Kobe, but this here is way over the top. I guess Shaq wasn't even around for those games and Kobe did it all. By himself.

And when the Finals started, I guess Kobe was the one carrying the team and Shaq was the one jacking up crazy shots and shooting a miserable 35%.

Keep in mind he was pouring in double-double's without a dominant player to defer to or play off of. And those double-double's consisted of 30, 40, and 50 point games on the regular.

Who would you choose for your team.....Kobe or Shaq?

Me personally I would choose Shaq....no matter how bad the game is going you rarely here Shaq complaining. He just plays the game.

Lets not forget that 25 y/o Kobe has about 7 years of playing under his belt. Combine that with the wear and tear of going deep in the playoffs the past 5-6 years and you're looking at a pretty old 25 year old. So its arguable whether he's peaked or not. Can't be too long before he starts to lose a step. When that happens, who knows how effective he'll be? He's too stubborn to master the more mental aspects of the game the way Jordan did when he lost a step.

Whether he was in the NBA or not he would have been playing basketball year-round, so that means very little.
 
This stage of their careers...I'll take Kobe. Kobe has become the most complete player in the NBA, while playing in a system that doesn't take advantage of his skills. The Lakers know this kid will win a lot if you put players around him to support his game. Shaq is mad because that's what Dr. Buss wants him to do. I'll bet money Shaq don't go anywhere.
