Kimbo the next Tyson? Yeah, that's the idea

STUDIO CITY, Calif. - For those of a certain age, those who can still recall the ancient analogue ways, the image seems incongruent: Kimbo Slice, a gold-toothed former bodyguard for street pornographers, appearing at an interview podium with Bill Paley's seal of approval.

That CBS eye remains the Tiffany network's imprimatur, still regarded in many quarters as the gold standard in network programming. But the world has changed. Unique users have replaced Nielsen points as a barometer of relevance. And you can only give people ? particularly males between the ages of 18 and 34 ? so many repeats of "CSI" and "NCIS" and "Criminal Minds" on Saturday nights. Enter Kimbo Slice, who will appear this weekend as the featured fighter in mixed martial arts' debut on network prime time, "EliteXC Saturday Night Fights."

Rest story

Saturday was the first time I checked out the MMA stuff and Kimbo slice will not succeed if he does not learn how to fight on the ground. Dude couldn't handle Kimbo standing up trying to exchange blows, but when they were on the ground he was man handling Slice. He is going to get better hopefully being this was only his 3rd fight.

Yea...he's a good street fighter...but that's it. I don't think he'd fair too well against some of the UFC champions. They'd tear him a new one!!!

That was the worst thing for Kimbo on Saturday night, to be put in there with someone who could take him to the ground. Kimbo is exciting to watch, but his skill level would lead to him getting smoked by anyone who can take him down. A better fighter would have punched his face off in the last minute of that second round when he was down for about a minute.

I agree. He definitely has some work to do on the ground. He managed to get out once but I just think he doesn't know enough quite yet. He seems like the type of person who could learn a little though. Willing to do whatever it takes to make a living.

Yeah, Kimbo gotta work on his ground game. If he's a heavyweight, some of them Brazilians woulda made short work of him on the ground. Tim Silva would've been a good heavyweight fight for Kimbo, since Silva's more of a stand-up guy.

Too bad Kimbo's a heavyweight, I would've loved to see him against Tito Ortiz, Chuck Liddell or my boy Ramp Jackson.

That was another thing I noticed about the fight. The other guy had about 20-30lbs on him as well. I think the fight was supposed to be at 256lbs and Kimbo weighed in at 230-ish.

And that cauliflower ear was :vomit:

Bruh...that dude's Cauliflower ear looked like the nurse from South Park with the fetus stuck to her face...that isht was hideous...

It just screamed out "Hit me, MFer! Hit me!"...Kimbo did the right thing by going it at -- when he was standing up. And when Kimbo bust it, it looked like a scene from Friday the 13th.

Dude need some plastic surgery to fix that ear. But I give it to Thompson, he had a good strategy by getting Kimbo on the ground. However, he couldn't get the job done on the ground.

BTW: The chick fight and the one with Robbie Lawler were the best fights of the night...

...thats probably true, but that dude was just fighting off of technique at that time. Kimbo had rocked him several times and it took a lot out of him. What Kimbo really needs to work on, outside of technique, is endurance/stamina. Early on, when Nasty Ear got him to the ground, you could tell that at first Kimbo was a little lost. However, he eventually remember what Boss had taught him and started using technique to maintain. Now it wasn't as pretty or as graceful as what we are use to seeing, but it definitely was signs of technique. Now at the end of the fight, Kimbo was just trying to hold on on the ground. When he got back to his feet, he had that look like he couldn't go back to the ground. I was wondered what took him so long to Tee-off on that ear. When he popped it, he popped that cherry something fierce.

It's good to see there are a lot more MMA fans on here...

but bishop..i thought I was the only one that saw Kimbo looking like he couldn't get back on the ground...

But in the future, I can see Kimbo fighting a style similar to Forrest Griffin (sp), that "brawl-n-sprawl" style to keep ground guys honest. Kimbo gotta work on his sprawl technique if he don't wanna get back on the ground. However, when he was on the ground, he showed good technique and defense. Thompson got off a lot of shots on Kimbo..but they weren't necessarily the hard, end a fight type shots.

Cosign that. When they showed the shots that Kimbo gave him in slow motion, it brought back memories of Mutombo getting beat to sleep by Shaq in the finals against the Nets.

I'll stick with the fake and scripted wrestling...lol I was through when he popped ole dude's ear. Didn't look good in slow motion.

You will normally find Cauliflower Ear on wrestlers. In the midwest where wrestling is big, you see plenty of guys with it. However, today they make the kids wear ear protectors to prevent it.

I actually like Kimbo but his stamina is terrible. He got winded just as fast as he did 2 years ago when he fought that cop on youtube. It looked like he did NO endurance training since then.

A good smaller mma guy (185 lbs) would beat him. He and Thompson are C class fighters but I guess he's getting better.

No, not that one BB. The one where the blood actually shoots out of the ear. :dead:

Oh, and Kimbo should never be compared to Mike Tyson.

I agree. At his best Mike Tyson was amazing. Kimbo is nothing more than a guy who fought some bums on the street, put the videos on youtube, now he's famous. Time will tell how good he really is.

Put Kimbo is the ring with somebody with a halfway decent ground game and it's a wrap.
