I've seen and heard some folks putting him as a top 5 or top 15 Yankee. He's not in the top 15 and I'm a Yankee fan. Great guy and a first ballot HOFer though.

Name 15 that were better. A lot of those Yanks from back in the day were way overrated and didn't have to play against some of the best because of segregation.

Ruth, Mantle, Rivera, Munson, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Gossage, Ford, Jackson, Berra, Gomez, Rizzuto, Winfield, Hunter and a bunch of other Yankees. Shoot, Jeter wasn't even the best SS on his own team when A-Rod was there.
 
Derek Jeter is top 5 or 10 in my opinion...championships, consistent play, amazing defense, and hit above 300 for his career...it's unfortunate that he played during a time in which baseball began to decrease in popularity. His numbers don't lie...only thing he didn't do was hit a ton of home runs.

Thanks :lol: I'd put W. Ford over him too.

Jeter's SS skills were slightly above average and he bat was average . The Championships, his personality, and playing in a big market is what set him apart.

Jeter was better than most of them. Like I said most of the Yankee greats from back in the day didn't play against blacks so to me there should be asterisks by there names.

That's incorrect. There were plenty of Yankees greats after MLB allowed blacks back into baseball. Heck Kendrick named a ton of them.
 
In order for Jeter to be regarded as a Top 10 Yankee, he'd had to be regarded as the best player in baseball during stretchers of his career. That never happened.
 
ITs not that Jeter was the GREATEST Yankee that everyone one is making a big deal about, its the fact that he was so respected by not just his teammates, but his peers on other teams as well as opposing fans. His career is defined by his consitency. He wasn't the best player on his team, but unlike some teammates (A-Rod) he didn't disappear in October. He showed up to play everyday and played hard. He respected the game so the game respects him in return. In 20 years the worst thing that we have heard about Jeter was a rumor that he gives his women gift baskets after getting the booty. As a high profile member on the most storied team in the countries largest and most unforgiving media market......he never cracked. There were no PED scandals or slapping the ball out of the first baseman's hand as he tried to reach first base. There were no drawn out contract disputes played out through the media in a narcissitic effort to get more money. BUT!!!!!! There was the night that Jeter ran clear across the infield from his shortstop position to cut a ball off from right field and zip a throw to Jorge Pasada to catch Jason Giambi on what was sure to be a score for a team destined to go to the World Series.....yet instead he perserved a Yankee win with the play and sparked the Yankees as the went on to capture yet another World Series title.

Thats why baseball loves Jeter.

I think he's the greatest Yankee ever... Look at his ranking in every category. I was floored when I found out that no other Yankee had close to 3K hits.

WUT...

Again, in order for Jeter to be regarded as the greatest Yankee ever, he'd had to have been considered during a long stretch of his career the best player in baseball. He wasn't. He would have needed to be considered better than Griffey Jr., Bonds or Pujols or A-Rod during the time in which he played.

You wanna know whose Jeter's career numbers are most similar to? Craig Biggio. And when I think of all the great Yankees, the first name that comes to mind is a guy who put up the same numbers as the longtime second baseman of the Houston Astros.

That's due to long mostly healthy career. He played 20 years. Don't get me wrong I'm a Jeter fan I am also a Yankee fan. He deserves all of the praise he is getting but there were too many better Yankees. I gotta agree with Kendrick.
 
Okay..that's fine! I still think he's the best Yankee ever based on longevity, consistency, winning, and overall contributions to the game. He actually should have been MVP in 1999 (I think that was the year) but voters vote how they vote. Those guys who you all rated above him ("during his playing days") didn't play for the Yankees. Even if they had, none of them would finish on the all-time hit list above Jeter who sits at #6. Yeah, they were all Home run hitters during the homerun era (steroids, etc) but homeruns aren't the only criteria, especially for a shortstop.

For those who say "A-Rod was a shortstop", my answer to that is "who got moved!"
