Just A Question For Su, Alcorn And Jsu Posters

I dont know what the average is over the last 10 years. But, I think if the attendance is higher with SU/JSU the answer is three fold. 1) The caliber of teams that SU/JSU has put on the field the last 10 years 2) The proximity of the schools 3) S.U. has a larger student body and alumini base than Alcorn.

With all of that said, I think that if Alcorn puts a better product on the field, attendance could sway slightly in their favor v.s. JSU.

I wonder why the SU VS JSU is larger than the JSU VS ALCORN
game. (in Jackson.)?
Conventional wisdom would say that the "CORN" and TIGERS
would be higher, since both schools are from the same state.

Just curious

Well, looking at it from a in state swac rivalry Alcorn & Jsu is a big game. When it comes to out of state swac rivalry is comes down to SU/jsu as one of the biggest games.

Have to agree with JROCK. The JSU/Alcorn attendance has dropped because of Alcorn's lack of competitiveness.

To add to JROCK comments. Jackson State and Southern have the 2 largest game day followings. Period. Next Southern and Jackson are only 2 hours apart. So even tho they are in different states they are close. In fact, Jackson State is closer to Southern than Grambling. One year, I left my house at around 4 p.m. and made it in time for the game in Jackson.

The biggest reason for this is the lopsidedness of recent Jackson State - Alcorn games. The games haven't been that competitive since the departure of Steve McNair, and the Alcorn fans have not been coming out in flocks to see these potential blow-outs. This past year's game between the two drew the biggest crowd in recent years because Alcorn was having a good season (by their standards) and needed a win against JSU to stay in the SWAC championship race. Their fans felt that they had a legitimate chance of winning, and that JSU was having a subpar season(although JSU's record was ironically better that Alcorn's..... Go figure!)...

Now the JSU - Southern rivalry, on the other hand, has been much more competitive, and the Jags have a HUGE following. Add all of this up, and there you have it.

And another thing...

For many years, especially during the 70's and 80's, JSU/SU game took on extra meaning because it was in all actuality an elimination game. For a time, a loss to GSU by these "other two" was almost automatic. JSU had to beat SU because the next week the GSU game was coming up. Losing to SU meant low morale going into the GSU game. They couldn't afford to be viewed as "suspect". With SU, they knew that a loss was coming their way in the Bayou Classic. Plus the fact that they usually had a loss coming at the hands of the Alcorn Braves made this game sooooo pivotal.

JSU finally was able to get a win streak against GSU during the 80's and SU finally experienced consistent winning during the early-mid nineties. It was during the mid nineties that GSU and Alcorn's programs "slipped" in terms of being consistent winners.
This heightened the SU/JSU rivalry as there were several very close last minute wins/losses in recent matchups that decided the championship.

It will be interesting to see what decision will be made when these two are no longer required to play (rotate off the schedule).
Hopefully the powers that be will be able to work out a compromise to have the game continue despite not being "required" to play. It is one of the better matchups and traditional games in College football.

The Capital City Classic hasn't been the same since McNair left. However, this past season was one of the best years the CCC has seen since McNair's departure.
If the team does as well as they are supposed to do (returning 17 or 18 starters) then the CCC could be a sellout like it was when Steve was there.
And the weather hasn't been too kind to the CCC, either. In '98 and 2000, it was cold and raining. People aren't going to come out and sit in the cold and the rain. Attendance was back up this year. It was a good day for the game.

Im on the record as saying that SU will avoid a game with JSU at all cost. They are running from all competitve HBCUs and it wouldnt surprise me if they opted out next year.

That is an assinine an shallow comment. S.U. will not let its second largest revenue game go. You would be a great candidate to work in the SWAC office. You would feel right at home.

I believe that both Southern and JState realize the financial impact this game has on their Athletic programs.....It only makes sense that both schools continue playing each other, whether the games count in the SWAC Standings or not......The games have become huge draws, and with the teams being as competitive as they are, coupled with the Band Battle, the SU/JSU matchup is about the only sure moneymaker beside the BC and the SHC.

The only question I have is this: Why does Southern choose to play JState in the Superdome, and pay the high prices for lodging and facility rental....I wish they could strike a deal and play the game in Jackson every year.......The stadium (even with it's flaws) seems a better deal than going to the Superdome....And the hotel costs in N.O.???? I won't even get started.......

You all bring in valid points. I feel that the Southern vs Jackson State game has the "on-paper" potential of being the biggest game in Black College Football. Southern has one of the largest fan followings in the nation and JSU consistently leads the entire 1-AA division in attendance. When you put those 2 factors together you get $$$$ and HUGE numbers. ....Especially when the game is played in Jackson. Now, I think the game can draw just as large of a crowd in New Orleans (we had at least 20,000 JSU fans ther in 00, to Southern's 25,000), but It's a bit much to forsee 2 HBCU classics in the Dome every year....one would suffer. Jackson is the site. Everyone can agree that the JSU vs SU game IN JACKSON, is like non-other. It's the perfect atmosphere for the game. It's a short trip for SU fans and the JSU fans will be there regardless. No other fans in the SWAC travel like Southern and Jackson State....especially when they travel to play each other. This game has been coming up for a long time. It's a good thing that Grambling's football program is finally back on the map. They did it just in time, the SU vs JSU game was about to surpass the Bayou Classic. lol. note:JSU vs SU 1999 in Jackson. Bayou Classic didn't stand a chance against that game. You hate to see any HBCU classic go down though, so it's a good thing for Grambling and Southern that GSU is winning again. We'll just have to see what comes out of the JSU vs SU game. Now as far as the Capital City Classic goes. ..... It has turned into an all out JSU PARTY. LMAO. We just show up to the game to have fun and party and wait around to see just how bad we are going to beat Alcorn. There hasn't been any competition there in years. JSU fans love the game, but Alcornites are understandably not to interested in seeing it. lol. We have a ball though.

I am not totally sold on SU playing JSU next year either. How many teams in the SWAC want FAMU on their schedule. If SU had made just a 1.5 hour trip to Alcorn last year, they would be getting a return trip from the braves this year. They don't lose money playing AlaState because Alabama State PAYS them to play in the classic so SU gets money on the road ond at home in that deal. If SU has passed up the chance to have Alabama State, Alcorn, and FAMU AT HOME , they might not play JSU either.

TP,
You guys keep saying that we pulled out of the FAMU deal, when Billy Joe was quoted in the paper and on this board wanting out of the game. Pete nor Billy want to play each other for some reason. Even in saying that you guys are a trip. It's all about the benjamins. You keep saying we ran from Alcorn? Did Alcorn's AD call us to schedule SU? Why is it always on SU? The last few years have seen our home games dwindle and we had gotten into this "Classic mode" so I understand the business of the deal. Just like the Nebraska's and others schedule a home patsy. Now would I like us to play TNSU and FAMU. Of course I would. But it is obvious that did not happen for whatever reason. That all falls on the AD. Not Pete.

McNeese is supposed to come on the schedule next year and I hear TnSU will replace Tulane in the Big Easy Classic. Whether that all pans out who knows. I am sure since SE Louisiana is bringing football back, they would love to come on down to BR for a game. So I do not understand all this stuff about SU running away from folks. I personally hope SU can play FAMU again. It was the longest out of conference game involving a SWAC school. Bama St vs Skegee is older I believe, but they(ALSU) were not in the SWAC all that time either. You guys just act like the other ADs have stepped up to the plate and said we want to play SU. Yeah they want to play us alright, in their backyard or at a neutral site.

First, FAMU wanted out of the SU FAMU series, Joe was quoted as saying

More comments from Billy Joe

Michael Wallace: Is this precisely the reason you're not in favor of playing tough teams such as Southern on future non-conference schedules?
Joe: With a schedule like ours, we need some schedule relief. We play eight conference teams that are very tough. The three non-conference games that you have, you'd like them to be not as tough as conference games. North Carolina A&T and B-CC have it right. They play eight conference games and one, two or as many as three non-conference games they have a good opportunity to win. Not three highly emotional games a year on top of the conference ones.

As far as Jackson State goes, I know of absolutely no plans to no play jackson. Most of the other teams in the SWAC east may or may not get scheduled when we don't have to play them. It makes no sense to cut the swac schedule down from 9 to 7 games to free up games to play other people, but then turn around and play swac teams anyway. I was sorry to see that we didn't play Alcorn, but there was no room on the schedule.

Now as far as playing in Jackson every year, you got us twisted with Alcorn and Miss Valley. We are not giving up a home game that easy. Your statement "It's a bit much to forsee 2 HBCU classics in the Dome every year" But you are proposing 2 in Jackson (Capital City Classic)????? But 2 could work in N.O. and BTW, SU-Jackson State was not about to surpass the bayou classic. The competition on the field was closer between SU-JSU but if you think that is the determining factor, you don't know much about the Bayou Classic.

Just get ready to come to the dome, and be glad yall ain't comming to Mumford, because that's where you may be if the dome gets to expensive.

Lewis,

Billy Joe did say that but Billy Joe does not make the schedule. He does not want to play Miami either. So he wanted schedule relief yet, he scheduled Troy State over Southern. This is as bad as people saying we were scared to play TxSo when we opted to play NCA&T.

I don't agree with playing all SWAC games either but when you look at it from a yearly standpoint, sometimes playing those games would be good. For example, I can't wait for PV to rotate off the schedule but if for some reason, they go 8-3 this year and return most of their starters in 2003, I could see a reason for JSU to continue the series with them. Such is the case with Alabama State and Alcorn. Both of these teams should be better than Miles and St. Paul. SU ain't Nebraska and the SWAC ain't the SEC. We don't need to schedule down...especially not our top teams. I can see Valley or PV scheduling some D2's but JSU, SU, Gram and Alcorn should avoid this unless it is a highly ranked D2.

Joe reflected the attutude of FAMU. Playing Southern was a grudge match no matter what our record was. If I was AD, I would have kept the series alive. But they didn't ask me.
As far as your second statement, when our schedule was made for last year Alcorn was comming off a bad year headed to another bad year, so even following your logic, we should not have scheduled them. The reason for Miles and St. Paul is we just need to fill up this years schedule, most descent D1AA team will want a home and home, and we can't /aren't going to do that with the 2 open slots we have this year. WE have other things in the works for future season. No way are we going to return a visit to them. We did not even return a visit to Morris Brown. They came, we beat the *&^%$ outta them and sent them back to the ATL. We did not go out there. Other SWAC schools did a home and home with them.
