JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- James Bell, a high school football coach in Houston, Texas, was named Monday as head football coach at Jackson State University. The announcement was made by JSU athletics director Roy Culberson.

Bell, 44, was one of four coaches to interview for the Tigers' job. Bell becomes JSU's 10th head coach since 1949, replacing Robert Hughes, whose contract wasn't renewed after three consecutive 7-4 seasons. Hughes' $85,000 per year contract expires Dec. 31.

That same amount has been penciled in for next year's athletic budget, although the new coach may be brought in at a slightly larger salary.

JSU President Ronald Mason Jr. has said he wanted to "bring in new blood."

Bell, who has no ties to JSU or the Southwestern Athletic Conference, has nearly 20 years of collegiate coaching experience, including stints as defensive coordinator at North Texas (1995-96), Wake Forest (1997-99) and Indiana (2000-01). He worked with Culberson at North Texas.

Bell had been at Chavez High in Houston, where his team went 1-9 this season, for six months.

"We're excited about having the opportunity to work with Coach Bell and we are looking forward to our spring training and upcoming football season,"

Culberson said in a statement. Jackson State opens the 2003 season on Aug. 30 at Northwestern State at Natchitoches, La.

Yea Congrats, what an excellent & outstanding choice. I truly believe such a choice will put JSU back on top of the SWAC;)

It's amazing how those past ties come into play (UNT). LOL

Merry Christmas, Jackie!

I started to lay my mack down on old dudes wife at the press conference.....but I thought to myself....naaaaw. Let old boy move his couch to town first.

His record was 1-9 last year and this qualifies you for a promotion?

Can someone please provide some context for me because I'm lost.

It's a matter of not what you know or what you've done, but who you know.

A news cast in Baton Rouge had something similar to the following in dialogue after this was announced:

Anchor: Wait a minute. You are saying JSU fired a coach with a 7-4 record to hire a high school coach with a 1-9 record?

Sport Anchor: Aaaaahhh, Yes.

Anchor: (throws papers in hand down and out) Who does he know? (shaking head)

That was funny. It looks to me that this coach's friend probably promised the job to him last year. So, this coach didn't renew his college commitment or go into another one and took whatever little high school job he could to kill the rest of the year in waiting for his JSU promised job. Thus, he may not have had his heart into the high school deal. Let's hope so for JSU's sake. It looks like he has a decent background in coordinating. I just think their best choice was their own which Offensive Coordinator at Alcorn. Oh well!!! I recall Alcorn hiring a known SWACer as basketball coach because he was so much better than the SWAC coaches and I recall him gettin' his butt whipped out of the conference. Hmmmm....

I hope he works out, because I love beating good Tiger teams. Plus, the conference needs everyone to get better (see MVSU). Totten has done a good job. Hopefully, he will continue to improve the Devils also.

PEACE!!!

Im wondering did that news cast say the same thing when Pete hired an offensive coordinator with no experience because he was white.

"Are you telling me that Prejudice Pete hired a TE coach from Tulane with no coordinating experience?"

"Thats the way it appears Bob"

"I wonder what he saw in him."

"Well Bob, I dont think it was what was in him as much as what was ON him....You know the like white meat over there"

(white men chuckle here)

Maybe this dude will know how to use timeouts wisely.

No more c**n Ball for JSU.

Right............... Was Tulane 1-9??????:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Coach Bell is officially on the clock

I have yet to find one Jacksonian who is pleased with the hiring of Coach Bell. That said.

A. Will coach Bell be the Cooper (A&M) of Jackson State? Both have Division I experience, although Cooper had a better resume than Bell plus he was a former Div. I head coach. Coach Bell has only 1 year high school ball as a head coach.

B. Coach Bell will receive the same salary as Coach Hughes. You get whay you pay for.

C. If Bell receives the same salary as Hughes the assistants will probably receive similar salaries. How can you upgrfade you coaching if you aren't willing to pay.

D. JSU's schedule is already out for 2003. Does he have to go undefeated to remain for the 2004 season?

E. Does Coach Bell have enough returning talent to give JSU the 2003 title?

Good luck JSU, I will see you on October 18.

No Tulane was not 1-9. but you know what you get for hiring a TE coach for a OC just because he white? You dont score over 20 points a game til the 8th game of the season....and that was PV. Maybe just maybe one of these days, you guys will wake up.

gd

Cooper would have been successful at JSU. He left A&M because he realized that he would never be able to recruit quality athletes while there. Yes he was an idiot, but he was just in a bad situation too.

JSU will get the athletes we need to win the SWAC every year because we are who we are. You can not recruit in Bama to win the SWAC. Even when Bama State finally won the SWAC, they were lead by players from Jackson MS. Bama high schoolers dont go to HBC because of the mentality of the Bama folks. You can see the submissive attitudes of the Bama folks on this board. Hell I think they would rather for a big time recruit to go to Bama or Auburn instead of their HBC.

Does Bell have enough talent returning?
Come on man, you didnt mean to ask that question. Say it aint so.

yes Jackson state has talent but we all know that a team must have coaching to go along with that talent. Yes every body is going to smack JSU because he is a 1-9 high school coach.

lets be real for a second

Do you beleive (GR) he is the man for the job. yes or no will do for me.

This is very interesting.

(Culberston saying to self:, I shole hope my buddy can coach, then that'll show 'em I wasn't a buffoon after all)
