Blue-White contested with vigor

By Mark Alexander
Clarion-Ledger Staff Writer

There was a lot of playful smack talking between players and coaches this week leading up to Friday night's Blue-White spring game at Newell Field.

Neither side came away with bragging rights, though, as the teams battled to an 18-18 tie.

"Let's play overtime, c'mon Coach," JSU receiver Robert Jacobs said to head coach Robert Hughes as the final seconds ticked away. "We can't let it end in a tie."

Hughes would have none if it; besides, he was very pleased with what he saw. The White team was comprised of the first team offense, second team defense and reserves; the Blue team was made up of the first team defense, second team offense and subs.

"I knew it was going to be a tough game," Hughes said. "I liked the competitiveness and the intensity they showed. They played like they've been playing all spring. They've really been putting out."

Friday night's game was intense from the outset, highlighted by a handful of big plays and several hard licks administered by both sides. Perhaps, it was the motivational talk beforehand from Herman Boone, the former coach portrayed in the movie Remember the Titans.

One of the hardest licks came late in the game when linebacker James McGowan tattooed quarterback Robert Kent near the White team's sidelines, setting off a mini-fracas. Both teams were hit with personal foul penalties before play was resumed.

"I was hungry for a lick at the time," McGowan said with a wry smile. "It was just instinct. I realized it was our quarterback, but I was already in the air by then. I apologized to him afterward."

Said Kent: "I love it, that's the way I like to play. I thought I heard the whistle blow, so I kinda stood up and slowed up. It was over for me by then because he was coming. He had left his feet already."

Other defensive highlights included: A vicious, but clean, hit by free safety Lamont Woulard on receiver Cletis Gordon as Gordon attempted to catch a pass across the middle; cornerback Marcus Craft's hit on Jacobs that forced a fumble that was picked up by linebacker Marion Mark, who returned it 60 yards for a touchdown; and safety Vince Davis' two interceptions.

Davis returned the second one nearly 55 yards before lateraling the ball to linebacker Elgin Andrews, who picked up about 20 more yards, side-stepping Kent along the way.

"Yeah, I had to put a couple of my moves on him," Andrews said with a laugh. "I faked him out. I used to play a little running back in high school, you know."

Speaking of running backs, Charles Lee was very impressive, rushing for a game-high 104 yards on 12 carries to lead the underdog Blue team.

As always, JSU's depth at the receiver position was evident. Chris Jones, who missed last year's spring game because of a wrist injury, had a big evening with a game-high seven passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns. Tim Manning flashed his considerable skills with five catches for 140 yards, including a dazzling 47-yard catch and run in the second half in which he ran to his left before reversing field after seemingly being surrounded by a host of defenders.

Newcomer Michael Johnson, a 5-foot-10 sparkplug, turned in a brilliant, 34-yard touchdown catch from John Flen. Johnson caught the ball in the middle of the field, shook off one defender and then eluded two more as he scampered into the end zone.

"He's quick," JSU offensive coordinator Darrell Asberry said. "He's going to get in the mix some."

New defensive coordinator Greg Johnson kept things fairly basic Friday night, not wanting to tip his hand before the Tigers' season opener against Southern Miss on Aug. 31 in Hattiesburg.

Hughes was impressed nonetheless. "I like their hustle," he said. "They've developed a chemistry these past 15 days. You can tell it in their attitude."

Roar Man,

I will admit that TNState probaly has the second best receiving corp in BCF but the last time I checked you had a new, inexperienced QB and about 7 missing defensive starters. I guess you forgot about that.

whats the difference between a "reserve" and a "sub" ?

Also why is the QB's getting hit up like that....

Gotta love that team unity.

This is what I mean by picking articles apart trying to find something to make yourself feel confident about you own chances.

Sept 7th cant get here soon enough.

Can't resist!

First at Valley...then at Elmore...now at home in a scrimmage (Did anyone through up gang signs?)

Maybe yall need to get boxing as a SWAC sanctioned sport!:lmao:

In the words of GR: " I hope they hit the other team like they are hitting their own teammates" ..or something like that.

You all will not believe the licks that were being passed out there. We even had players put out of the game early due to injury. We were almost about to believe in the Bill Hayes "My players are sissies, so they can't practice" mentality. From what I saw from the defense, here are a few teams who won't cross the 50.

AAMU
A&T
Southern

(Schools like PV/Valley/UAPB are givens). Those boys took this game seriously. The fans saw a good game. We got a pretty good evaluation and all I know is that DID NOT A ONE OF US WALK OUT OF THERE DISSAPPOINTED IN WHAT WE SAW.

I would only be worried if any of you had players as good as my second string....and half of ya'll don't.

But why injure your own teammate?
I can understand playing hard in the heat of battle, but you must still remember that the person you hurt, can't play for your team if he's injured. And if knocking out the starting QB and giving him a concussion is in the best interest of the team, than go right ahead. .....Advantage: opposition, because the starting QB got hurt by his own man and can't play. So you don't have to play against the best that that team has to offer.

Fiyah,

The kid lost his head when he hit Kent. No other time did anyone try to lay any hard licks on any QB. They always pulled up, and the ref blew the whistle to signal sack or tackle. Once the lick was passed, everybody knew he messed up when he hit Kent, including himself.

That happens anywhere. Some knucklehead is bound to forget the "don't hit the QB" rule. It ain't like we allowed open season on our QBs.

As for the rest of the players, they better give out hits, if they wanna earn some playing time. And that's what they did.

All SWAC teams!!!! Attention all SWAC teams!!!!! Need I refer to the sig??? Well, just for the illiterate and autistic ones. (BT, Mike, and Mach) this ones for you.

I've never heard of a bench clearing brawl at an intra-squad scrimage.

Once again, JSU takes buffoonery to another level.

JSU player's only team meeting:

Its a good thing your QB is too good to participate with the rest of the team in scrimmages and stuff like that. Can you tell me why your coach is so confident in his abilities so soon?

Thrilla, there was a guy from Alcorn sitting with us and he admitted that he has not seen our defense attack like that in a long time. I am telling you, those boys were hitting so hard the backup recievers at one point seemed scared to come across the middle. I am telling you now that if anyone puts their hand on a ball they are going to get popped and popped HARD. Johnson obviously does not play sissy ball.

Thrilla, since your team plays such sissy ball, I really don't think most of them will survive past game two. Johnson has emphasized speed (with size that is) and aggressiveness. If your team wants some yards you are really gonna have to find a way to get those guys open in the flat and pray that they run a 4.3 and have some good moves. Otherwise, it's going to be a long day for the opposing offense.

Thrilla, this team is confident. They know they are talented, better coached and that they can play. I feel sorry for the teams in our way.

As Robber said, I think this is the way the players and the coaches wanted it. How can properly evaluate a team when they are top playing at full speed. Aside from that, these players are really battling it out for spots on the team. As you can see, the game was played very evenly so we are pretty good across the board. Bruh, you would be playing agressively too if you were a senior trying to get your job back.

Our poor opponents. :lmao:

Thrilla
You're pretty hard on JSU considering your school basically bent over and gave up your conference championship last year. Man, if we paid attention to what goes on at A&P we could smack on them.

thrilla,

It was not a bench clearing brawl. When McGowan hit Kent, his O-linemen came to regulate on his behalf, just like any teammate would. No punches were thrown.

Keep reaching.

I feel ya BIGCAT, but somehow the interest just isn't there.

TP,

No I have'nt forgot about the inexperienced QB's, But what you don't know is, the heir apparent for QB at TSU is probably going to wind up breaking every passing record at TSU. He is that good (reminds me of TSU great Joe "747" Adams)

The fact of TSU having such an outstanding group of wide receivers (I'm going to keep the backfield a secret Dr H, don't worry) will make up for some of that lack of inexperience.

The Defence:

Yeah, we lost a few there but also regain the services of a few veterans that were ineligible due to grades last year.

To tell the truth "no smack" I don't believe the SWAC will field a competitive team against TSU this year.

Roar Man,

Of all of the HBCU's we play, only TNState and Alcorn bring something back from last year. Honestly, I could care less about anybody's defense because our offense is going to embarrass some people. Your defense really could not stop JSU last year with LC's defensive left overs. But really, TNState has not ever had a defense. Bring those boys back who were out last year. I am sure they are not even practicing with the team. :lmao:

If your QB can adapt to the offense and the speed of the game by game TWO for TNState, I will be surprised. Dorsey is going to come at you defensively but his defense won't be nothing compared to the defense JSU is going field. That boy is not going to know what hit him..but I will. Their names will be McGowan, Mosley, Andrews, Bell and Mays. Oh, BTW you better bring a back up unless that boy can take a hit. Someone said earlier in a post that they knew your QB and he could not take a hit. For your sake, you better hope not because JSU is going to lay the leather on that azz!! Please throw across the middle. When the receiver wakes up, tell him the name of that bus was Lamont Woulard.

You all need to start hoping that our kickers don't show up.

Sonic98, I dont think anyone will be surprised when we blow them up like Afghanistan. They already know whats going to happen to their pathetic teams, but their fear just wont let them admit to it. Right PK?

Bench Clearing Brawl in Jackson. Can a player get suspended for one game for fighting in a Spring Practice Game?

I just hope they throw some flags on those late hits this year.
