Still stinging from Grambling State’s no-show for October’s homecoming football game and frustrated by what it perceives as a lack of support from the Southwestern Athletic Conference, Jackson State University has been pushing the Mississippi attorney general’s office for five months to pursue legal action against Grambling, the SWAC or both.

Documents obtained by The Clarion-Ledger through an open records request clearly show JSU’s determined effort to have its budget made whole. Persistent emails from JSU and subsequent inquiries by the newspaper have led Attorney General Jim Hood to review the university’s plea for help.

In an email to SWAC officials on Nov. 1, JSU projects it lost between $540,000 and $600,000 because of the forfeit. Ticket refunds accounted for approximately $475,000.

According to the documents, SWAC Commissioner Duer Sharp released a statement on Nov. 8 outlining penalties against Grambling. The school would pay Jackson State $50,000 and play JSU in Jackson each of the next three seasons.

But the $50,000 will be “taken out of future conference distributions,” Sharp said in the statement. And although Grambling will play in Jackson in 2014 through 2016, it really grants JSU only one extra home game in the annual series over the next four years.

The 2015 game was already scheduled for Jackson. And the site of the 2017 game — originally a JSU home game — has been changed to Grambling, SWAC officials notified JSU on Wednesday.

The penalties do little, if anything, to help relieve JSU’s immediate financial stress.

“This is greatly impacting our cash flow,” said Michael Thomas, JSU’s vice president of finance. “(The Institutions of Higher Learning) requires a balanced budget each year, which JSU has had for a few years now. For the first time in years, JSU is requesting from IHL an exception to this policy.”

Asked if Sharp’s previous relationship with Grambling, as interim athletic director in 2005-06, might have affected the penalties handed down, JSU spokesman Eric Stringfellow said, “that’s a question that’s best addressed by (Sharp).”

According to the article, the SWAC has changed the 2017 home date from Jackson to Grambling and only notified JSU last week regarding this sudden change?! We see Duer tried to give Grambling a "free" home game that was slated for Jackson?! Wow!!

If this is the case, I hope JSU sues the pants off both the SWAC and Grambling. This wreaks of total dishonesty and a biased playing field.

Yep! In summary the least toxic politically correct statement that can be made in this "situation" regarding Sharp is that JSU totally lacks confidence in Sharp's leadership!

Lol! A good lawyer would make this case so easy for Grambling to be done with this foolishness. Anyway, carry on Jackson State.

I also didn't know Sharp was a former AD at Grambling. Perhaps this explains why this man is single-handedly trying to lessen the penalties against Grambling due to it's lack of leadership.
This is very unprofessional and once again shows why the SWAC is the laughingstock of all conferences.:smh:

I could more easily say the same in JSU's favor. Grambling brought it's mess to JSU and involved us when we had nothing to do with your school's internal problems.
You should take your medicine like any man should.
Heck, even those same players who defied the school's President didn't seem to care about the repercussions it would bring on the school. That's not JSU's fault.

Yep it's not like Grambling State didn't supply the team buses, etc. BTW how didn't JSU know about 2017 when it was clearly reported that GSU would play in Jackson 2014-2016: http://www.tspnsports.com/forums/sh...ambling-To-Play-At-Jackson-State-Through-2016

Now the 2017 situation isn't a Grambling problem, it's a SWAC problem, GSU has no power to change things like that so JSU stop whining to Grambling and focus on the SWAC on that matter. Basebone1898 i already see where you are coming from. :read:

This is a horrible situation to say the least, I wish those boys would have just got their butts on that bus. I was told the weeks following the boycott Bobby Jindal put in a call to the Governor of Mississippi to ensure no legal actions were taken and if Jackson State preceded to sue Grambling, the State of Louisiana would step in and create years of legal actions. if JSU won, the State would put it on the backlog of lawsuits and it might take 20 years for JSU to recieve a dime.

Grambling is responsible for the actions of its players. That's without question. "Boycotts" aren't excused under the contract between the schools. Especially considering the so-called boycott was based entirely on internal issues at Grambling.

It doesn't work that way. No breach of contract lawsuit takes 20 years to resolve.

Will not go back and forth with this crap, the courts will have to handle this.

Well then why use the word "whining" when JSU's simply trying to regain what others are trying to take away. You guys seem to love using the word "whining" when that word applies in no form or fashion to this situation.
White folks told Black folks to quit whining about equal rights but I'm certainly glad it didn't deter them.

Why is Grambling even playing Jackson State in Jackson this year, if there is a lawsuit against Grambling? Sounds as if JSU is double dipping if they proceed with the lawsuit..

The players did this to themselves by quitting. You can't just quit and think things will be ok. They need to learn that its consequences behind stuff like that, both GSU and the players.

I agree...it's called accountability.

The players would have made a GREATER statement if they played all the games given the conditions of the stadium. The unversity probably would have received more help. I live in Grambling and was not aware of the conditions until the boycott. These young men could have sought out help from members of the community and others. It's a sad situation that two leader (Dr. Pogue and Doug) had a pissing match and used these kids as pawns.
