Players' chatter turns to Southern Miss game

Jackson State's players did the usual during Sunday's media day at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, posing for pictures, signing autographs for fans, laughing and joking with teammates and talking about the upcoming season.
The topics of conversation varied, yet two words kept popping up: Southern Miss.
The Tigers and Golden Eagles open the season in 20 days at M.M. Robert Stadium in Hattiesburg. It will mark the first time the two schools have played each other in football since 1987.
"It's real big because it's the first game of the season, besides the fact that it's Southern Miss," JSU defensive lineman Llvee Archie said. "We're not just going down there to play, we're going looking for a W."
Making the grade
Perhaps no JSU player was happier about attending media day than receiver Robert Jacobs of Raymond. Jacobs, who was ineligible to play as a freshman, regained a fourth year of eligibility by earning his college degree in four years.
"It was a hard summer for me," said Jacobs, who passed 14 hours this summer. "I knew if I didn't pass I wasn't going to play."
Freshman placekicker Jaime Salazar also has been cleared to play. He joined the team Friday.
Young cat
There's another receiver named Morris from New Orleans on JSU's roster this season. It's Scott Morris, the younger brother of former JSU standout Sylvester "Cat" Morris, now with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Morris is slated to play this season after sitting out his first two seasons at JSU. He will wear jersey No. 85 like his brother.
"It was a gift," Morris said. "It was in my locker when I got here."
Injury update
Offensive lineman Chris Hammonds (knee) and TE Courtney Rogers (ankle) didn't practice this week after sustaining injuries. Hammonds had his right knee scoped Wednesday but says he should be "full throttle" by the first game.
