JSU "Orchestra" to perform for Obama in WA D.C.

(JACKSON, Miss.) - The Jackson State University Chamber Orchestra has been invited to participate in two events celebrating the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama in Washington, D.C.

The group, which will include 16 students, will first perform for the United Negro College Fund's 26th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration at 8:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19. Later that day, at 2 p.m., the orchestra will perform for the president-elect and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation during a religious service honoring Obama and King.

"This is the biggest thing we've ever done," said orchestra director Robert Blaine. "The orchestra has never played for an elected president. This is a huge honor."

Blaine has completed a special arrangement of "Lift Every Voice and Sing," often called the "Negro National Anthem" which he said is designed to move the audience.

I'm gonna go and get a preview of the selections at their special concert on campus at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 15, at JSU's F.D. Hall Music Center. Admission is free.

JSU chosen to perform in the comfort of 2 well known "WARM :D:DESTABLISHMENTS" on TWO GREAT ENGAGEMENTS!!

Not many chosen to perform in the privacy of THE PRESIDENT of The United States of America!! :cool::cool:

I loved being in it back in the day.... :)




We went to Columbus Ohio once, and played at The Ohio State University. We performed in their concert hall. After we played, Dr. (London) Branch fielded a few questions from the audience. Somebody asked how many orchestra members were also members of the marching band. Most of us were.

They wanted to hear 'Get Ready'........ :shame:

Dr. Branch shook his head and turned to us and said, 'Give ;em what they want'....

So the Orchestra played Get Ready....


The things we get ourselves into... :shame::D

Washingtong D.C. loved their Performance on BOTH days :clap:
I got a chance to hear them before they left, they're a talented group of students. They deserved that high honor. :tup:
