Memo to my school: HIRE Rick Comegy    If Comegy can win at Tuskagee, he could definitely win at JSU. Harold Jackson would be my second choice and John McKenzie is a distance third.

And then there were 3...

JSU coaching search down to three

Committee hopes to conduct interviews next week, agree on finalist by Dec. 2

By Mark Alexander

Tuskegee coach Rick Comegy, Baylor receivers coach Harold Jackson and Alcorn State offensive coordinator John McKenzie are the finalists in Jackson State's search for a new football coach.

Robert Kelly, the chair of the nine-member search committee, wouldn't reveal the names of the finalists. But people with knowledge of the search said it's down to those three ? two former JSU players (McKenzie and Jackson) with limited head coaching experience and a coach with a proven record at the NCAA Division II level.

The three are expected to interview in Jackson next week. After each coach has been interviewed, the search committee will meet to determine who will become the Tigers' next coach.

Kelly plans to have that name ready to present to school president Ronald Mason Jr., no later than Dec. 2.

Rick Comegy? Forget about it. Comegy ain't leaving Tuskegee unless JSU makes him AD and football coach.

I've said it in another post, and I'm saying it again. That's the only way you'll get Comegy.

I fully expect John McKenzie to be hired, if its limited to the three names mentioned.

You are probably right. JSU AD Roy Culberson is under contract through June 30. So it would be easy for Comegy to be hired as head coach and then assume AD duties after Culberson's contract runs out. After watching Alcorn play JSU this year I am convinced that McKenzie isn't right for this rebuilding process. Comegy is the right man out of this group. Second choice would be Harold Jackson but he has already said the only way he comes to JSU is if Culberson is gone. So Culberson must be praying "PLEASE SELECT MCKENZIE" or he will be on the unemployment line next to James Bell. :swink: I was hoping the committee would have selected two additional candidates with more head coaching or coordinating experience to interview. But McKenzie made the list because wants the job so badly and his ties to JSU are strong. :shh: I just hope that's the only reason he is on the list.

There's 1 school in the SWAC that I look at and say "I never want to end up like them". Prarie View? No, AAMU. Those cats will never get beyond 7-5, 8-4 records playing a D-11-caliber schedule while occassionaly backing their way into the SCG. And they're happy with that. That's why they'll forever be smalltime. Well that's exactly where we're headed if we hire McKenzie. I thought JSU was supposed to be beyond that kind thinking. I guess I was wrong.

NC A&T went this route 3 years ago and look where they are now, right back where they started. Luckily their Prez is going to correct this mess. We won't be so lucky.

A bad hire at Jackson State would be like the SMU death penalty at this point. :( I view McKenzie as a young coach you might give a chance if your old coach is retiring and you went 10-1, 9-2, or 8-3. This is a rebuilding project. You have to hire a builder. Comegy has done it. McKenzie has not. Simply as that. The problem with JSU is that everyone is looking out for their buddy. Some alumni were looking out for Robert Hughes. Culberson was looking out for Bell. Mason is looking out for Culberson. And I hope the committee is not looking out for McKenzie. Buddy-Buddy has hurt our program and I hope it doesn't ruin it for good this time.

This is sad, very sad. I thought JSU was trying to move forward with someone who could build a program, but if Mac's on the list, we are in the same boat. I knew once I saw the committee that Shannon would not be given a fair shot. No Mike White. We have a very long way to go.

Please don't hire Comegy. Please don't hire Comegy. Please don't hire Comegy. Please don't hire Comegy. Please don't hire Comegy. Please don't hire Comegy. Please don't hire Comegy. Please don't hire Comegy. Please don't hire Comegy. Please don't hire Comegy. He's too good of a coach and recruiter. It would get real ugly in Memphis.

We would have had him 3 years ago if the process had not been BULLSHAT on both sides. :shame:

Remember .............he was between a rock and a hard place after he had shown interest and sort of committed to that school on the east coast. When he saw the JSU job was "not in the cards", he stayed at SKEEGE. :)

Sorry dude .............he'll be wearing BLUE and WHITE before Christmas.......................JSU BLUE that is. :)

Don't Blow It JSU. This your guy!

The national crown was Central State?s third such title and Comegy was involved with two of those championships. Besides the 1995 crown, Comegy was a defensive line coach for the Central State 1992 national championship squad.

During his tenure at Central State and Cheyney, Comegy coached teams who sent over ten players to the National and Canadian Football leagues. Some of the noteworthy players who were drafted or signed as free-agent are as follows: Eric Williams (Dallas Cowboys), Hugh Douglas (New York Jets- 1995 Rookie of the Year), Vince Buck (New Orleans Saints), Marvin Pope (San Francisco 49ers), Milton Jones (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Kervin Wardroup (Detroit Lions), Marvin Coleman (Washington Redskins), Jason Shelly (Cowboys), Teka Brown (Cowboys), Russell Meeks (Calgary Stampeders) and Jim Williams (Chicago Bears).

Anthony Mitchell of the 2001 Super Bowl Champs (Baltimore Ravens) was Comegy?s first Tuskegee player to sign a professional contract. Offensive lineman Bennitte Waddell joined Mitchell in 2001 when he inked a pro contract with the Minnesota Vikings. Cornerback Roosevelt Williams was drafted in the third round by the Chicago Bears of the NFL and linebacker Kelvin Powell signed with the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL in 2002. Most recently, Drayton Florence was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the second round and Frank Walker was picked by the New York Giants in the sixth round in 2003.

Under Comegy?s leadership, the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee are 79-25 in nine seasons, capturing four SIAC championships- 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2002. He has also taken his Golden Tigers bowling five years (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004), winning three-of-five bowl games.

His Golden Tigers completed the 2000 season with a perfect 12-0 record. Comegy?s team won the 2000 National Black College Football Championship and the SIAC Championship.

The Golden Tigers led the SIAC in both scoring offense and scoring defense in 2001.

:alicia: Sorry I'm late with this, but a few weeks ago at the Bama St./MVSU game, I ran into a J'state alum who talked about the job search at JSU and a Board of Regents in Miss., which runs all colleges and universities in your state. He had some concerns which I will mention:

Is this Board involved in the search at JSU?

If so, who does this Board want hired as JSU's next football coach?

Does this Board and University President want a successful coach at JSU? I was surprised at the negative comments about the prez. I knew Culverson was on the hot seat with alumni, but did not realize the prez was too!

He was also concerned about people (higher ups) not wanting JSU to win in football because it would possibly affect Ole Miss and MSU. Is this a concern.

That was about the extent of our conversation. I had some questions of my own regarding the salary. Why only $85,000 a year or has this number changed since a couple of weeks ago? I've been busy and out of touch with the story. I understand that Jackson makes over $100,000 at his work now.

And I understand the McKenzie factor, but did he not get fired from J'state years ago as offensive coordinator? I recall he went back there after the successful '91 year at AlaSt. And what was his record as head coach of Delaware State? And what about Tyrone Nix who was at USM?

I will attempt to answer some of your questions.

Is this Board involved in the search at JSU? No. The board is called the Mississippi Board of Institutions of Higher Learning (the IHL aka College Board). The IHL does have to sign off on the contract for the new coach but it is not involved in the hiring process.

Does this Board and University President want a successful coach at JSU? Good question. JSU's president has been on record as saying football is not a very important revenue maker for the school. And he seemed to offer his support for Bell before the embrassing blowout against Pine Bluff that led to Bell's firing. Most fans believe he isn't too concerned about building a winning program and that doesn't make him a popular man around these parts. But JSU prez Ronald Mason's job is safe. The College Board will not remove him. They may would at Mississippi State or Ole Miss, but not at JSU or the University of Southern Mississippi.

He was also concerned about people (higher ups) not wanting JSU to win in football because it would possibly affect Ole Miss and MSU. Is this a concern? This is a concern I have heard before. Reason why, high school talent is thin in Mississippi right now. With both big schools down in football they need all of the good and decent recruits they can find and don't need JSU picking off decent talent. That happened in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Why only $85,000 a year or has this number changed since a couple of weeks ago? Expect the next coach to earn more. JSU can afford to pay more if it has to but the school didn't have to pay more than $85,000 for Bell.

And I understand the McKenzie factor, but did he not get fired from J'state years ago as offensive coordinator? I recall he went back there after the successful '91 year at AlaSt. And what was his record as head coach of Delaware State? And what about Tyrone Nix who was at USM.

McKenzie did get fired as JSU's offensive coordinator years ago. Coach James Carson replaced him with John Shannon and the offense became a top ranked Division I-AA offense under Shannon. McKenzie was successful at Alabama State. Alabama State averaged 430 yards and 41.2 points per game while posting 630 yards of total offense en route to a 36-13 victory over North Carolina A&T in the Heritage Bowl in 1991. He became head coach at Delaware State, but was fired after going 7-26 in three seasons. As for Tyrone Nix, look for him to remain co-defensive coordinator at South Carolina a few years before moving up to defensive coordinator then replace USM coach Jeff Bower when he retires. Nix may even become head coach at a big school before Bower retires. That's how good he is.

JSU NEXT COACH: Rick Comegy

My thing is, we as a conference always want to shop at K-Mart or the Dollar General Store. If you go out and spend the money on a winner, you will make whatever you have spent on that coach back at the gates on Saturday and in sponsorships. It is simple business principles. Invest in the right ways, on the right things, and it will pay the right dividends.

All I hope is that J-State brings in someone with some vision. Someone who is about winning...BOTH Inside and OUTSIDE the conference against the best in all the other Conferences. (In All Sports)

Then hopefully this mentality will spread to all of our other SWAC programs, to bring respect back to our conference.

Jackson drops out of JSU coach hunt

Former Tennessee State and Alabama State coach L.C. Cole added to short list

Coaching search

Who's In
John McKenzie - Alcorn State
Rick Comegy - Tuskegee
L.C. Cole - Lane

Who's Out
Harold Jackson - Baylor

Jackson State begins the interview stage in its search for its next football coach today as planned.

However, Baylor receivers coach Harold Jackson won't be one of the three coaches interviewed, according to people with knowledge of the search.

Jackson was one of three finalists, along with Tuskegee coach Rick Comegy and Alcorn State assistant John McKenzie. But Jackson withdrew his name from consideration over the weekend. That apparently opened the way for former Tennessee State and Alabama State coach L.C. Cole.

Comegy, whose team plays in Saturday's Pioneer Bowl in Charlotte, and Cole are scheduled to interview with the nine-person search committee today in Jackson. Cole didn't make the original short list but was the first alternate.

McKenzie is scheduled to interview Wednesday.

The search committee is expected to meet at the conclusion of those three interviews and then make a recommendation to JSU president Ronald Mason Jr. by Dec. 2.
