Small employs Parcells' method to keep overconfidence in check

GREENSBORO -- Just in case any of his players show signs of overconfidence, N.C. A&T football coach George Small gives them a dose of Bill Parcells.

The Aggies have much to feel good about after their 7-1 start, 3-0 record in the MEAC and No. 19 ranking in the NCAA Division I-AA poll.

But before those good feelings get out of hand, Small remembers when he was playing for the New York Giants under Parcells, now the Dallas Cowboys' head coach.

"I won't say it like he said it," Small said, "but let's put it this way: 'You haven't done anything yet, so don't get full of yourself.'

"He constantly stayed on us. Even when we were winning, you'd think we weren't winning. That's pretty much my philosophy up to this point."

Small doesn't downplay what his team has accomplished. But there are four games remaining and the Aggies can't afford a lapse in concentration if they're going to stay in the running for the MEAC crown and a I-AA playoff berth.

"In another two or three weeks, if you don't continue what you're doing you'll be soon forgotten," Small said. "People that jumped on the bandwagon -- their opinion can really change in the next few weeks. So I don't think it's going to (the players') heads."

QB SITUATION: Small said an MRI revealed that quarterback Randal Rankins has a slight tear in a medial collateral ligament in one of his knees. Rankins sat out the 27-7 victory over Howard and will likely miss Saturday's game at Bethune-Cookman.

Small said Marshall Glenn and Rico Watkins will both see action at quarterback, with Glenn getting the start.

One thing Small wants to see is better accuracy from his passers. Glenn, Watkins and Rankins have combined to complete just 44.4 percent.

"It's just poor execution, as far as passing the ball or consistency in catching the ball, other than Doug Brown or Jamal Jones," Small said. "We're going to have to fine tune that aspect in practice this week."

ETC.: Frank Patterson, who had been nagged by a hamstring injury, looked healthy in rushing for 94 yards and a touchdown against Howard. Small likes Patterson's vision, toughness and competitiveness. ... A&T's defense will have its hands full with Bethune quarterback Allen Suber, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in Saturday's 31-28 win over South Carolina State.

The defense, which had a sterling day other than giving up one long touchdown pass against Howard, settled down after committing three penalties on a long Bisons drive.

"You're dealing with young people and they have to learn it's not about them, it's about the team," Small said. "You can't always retaliate or lose your composure."

Why?? You beat us by three points??

BTW, I thought you promised to get from over here. Small sucks and in three years, you will be calling for his head. He has done nothing to benefit the A&T program. This 7-1 team is probably no better than the one JSU played in 2001. Your 7-1 team barely beat my 2-7 team. You should be ashamed. That is the best you can do....wait until we get better. You have reached your ceiling.

BTW, Hampton and BCC are gonna murder that sad team of yours. Have you played SCState yet?? Oh well.

Thrilla, you will be alive long enough to see Small destroy your program. Bill Hayes was a genious...you just don't know it yet. If I had to hire Bill Hayes or Small, I would hire neither but I would take Hayes over Small.

It is "thinking" like this that has helped to lead to the demise of the once proud jsu program.

I dont know if you know this or not but, the fact that NCAT&T is 7-1 is really an indictment of how poor the MEAC is. You dont realize is, but it is. The MEAC is a one team conference and when that team is hurting the whole conference hurts. The MEAC has to be the worst D1 conference in the nation.

Your team came to Jackson and barely crossed the 50....skated by on a win....but a win is a win. Then you went to Las Vegas and got worked by SU. Now SU is very improved from last year, but a 7-1 team shouldnt get blown out by SU.

There are 7 teams in the SWAC that are better than NCAT&T. I know you will take the 7-1 record no matter how bad your team is..... but just thank your lucky stars you are playing in the MEAC.

GR,

Playing Central, Norfolk and Morgan does that to you. However, his team has not played Hampton and BCC yet.... I think they may have one more game that they can win ...against Del State. That 7-1 is very inflated and will never get them anywhere in 1-AA.

Only the truly illogical sees JSU as a 2-7 team. I will take a 2-7 team that is dragging 7-1 (SU and A&T) and 6-2 (Gram) teams all across the field. That only let's you know that you 7-1 and 6-2 c**n ball players won't come within 3 TD's of a 7-1 or 6-2 JSU team. You guys have already been left behid and don't know it.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

It's thinking like this...

..and Doomsday, just to further my point...at 7-1, you are at your ceiling...the best you can be with no room to grow under that staff. My team is just as good as yours but has a long way to go.. I will take mine. Nothing is being developed on your team. I am willing to bet that the things you are doing now, you will be doing three years from now.

But tP, our staff has far more collegiate coaching experience than yours ever will cause let's face it, your's will all be jobless when their contracts are up (and not a moment before).

Our team has developed a winning record. We could lose every game from here on out and that won't change. Of course, that ain't gonna happen.

Likewise, your team has developed a losing record and it seems they have adopted your loser's attitude. Somehow thinking that if they lose to a team three years in a row they are superior and it's ok to have a losing record because you're better in your own mind.

The losing you are doing now, you will be doing three years from now, because you signed that c**n to a four year deal.

How does 2-7 feel? I am willing to bet you are on your ceiling contemplating jumping off but you have a long way to go.

I am willing to bet that the things you are doing now, you will be doing three years from now.

You mean like winning? Being tied for first place? Being undefeated lifetime against JSU? Improving from 4-8 last year to already 7-1 this season? Being ranked 19th in the country when we were picked in preseason to finish 6th in our conference? Being near the top in 1-AA football in total defense? Averaging over 20,000 each home game? Having a well-disclipined team, on and off the field? Competing for a conference championship and a 1-AA playoff bid?

OK. I think I can live with that.

Dances, you are the lowest form of internet smacker: a coward smacker. You have ran from this board all year after telling us how great BEll would be, how much Small would suck, and how Kent was the best QB in college football. You wasted everyone's time with that garbage and now that it blew up in your face and you had to eat crow, you won't even try to acknowledge you were wrong about those things.

I respect Robber because he came in and admitted that he was stupid for saying JSu had all that talent and that Bell could coach. But you are the leader of the wolfpack and all you do is hide under your desk, brag about how close your team losses each week and post pictures of yourself doing the Beyonce dance.

All that talk in the offseason and now we really see what kind of man you are.

BTW: A&T was 4-8 last year. We are 7-1 this year, even with losing our top three running backs, our top three D-linemen, our two cornerbacks and our top two quarterbacks. We have less overall talent than we had last year and yet we somehow have a much better record. That should go to show you the power of a great coaching staff.

Also, the MEAC currently has more teams in the top 25 than the SWAC does. Del State, NSU, Howard and Morgan (who beat #8 BCC) are no worse than UAPB, Valley, TSU and PV. You played FAMU on national TV and got worked. We played FAMU and won. We beat you head to head. You struggled against TSU and Valley. The rest of the games you lost.

Man, why am I even wasting my time responding to you? My team is in the playoff hunt. You are just 2-7 and a coward.

Dude

You need to quit with the "left the board" crap.

Im not like you...duck out and then duck back in when you think the coast is clear. Like I said, the fact that your horrible team is 7-1 is an indictment of the MEAC.

The only reason your teams win is cause yall play each other. If NCA&T is 7-1 after getting embarrassed by SU and not crossing the 50 in Jackson, so be it. I think JSU should apply to take FAMUs spot. Hell even Bell can have a winner in the MEAC.
