JSU Chad: Who is to say that the people who read the books you listed ( I reading The Purpose Driven Life so I take issue with your comments) are not also reading the Bible. I understand it is your opinion that

I take issue with this comment because while it is your opinion, it is very wrong and it makes a whopping generalization about "most folk". Unless you are in the mind of the one reading the book, then you stand a chance at being very wrong. There is nothing wrong with reading another book in addition to the Bible. Many books that are "similar" to PDL make reference to the scriptures in the Bible much like a preacher does on Sunday or Saturday. The difference is instead of hearing someone tell you a few things, you're reading it on paper. What, in the name of Jesus, is wrong with that? Granted, everybook out there is not the best book to read. Even in the Bible, it says to study to show yourself approved. It also explains how you can tell the type of tree by the fruit it bears...calling on you to be observant of the fruit. Therefore, I say unto you keep reading your Bible but also give room to read another book. They can be helpful. Just like with everything in life, you have to TAKE WHAT IS GOOD AND LEAVE THE REST.

If I am misunderstanding your statement, please elaborate so I can see your point more clearly. Thanks!

Chad: You need to bring your comments to this thread. The other threads had different purposes. We already agree that you disagree with what others read. That is cool. However, you keep making generalizations. For instance, in you last comment you said "if people want to keep reading other books and not the bible..." HOW DO YOU KNOW THEY DO NOT READ THE BIBLE? Are you with them every day and do you know ALL OF THE PEOPLE HERE? Let me answer for you. NO, you do not know me. Therefore, your statements are wrong. Stop being so stuck-in-the-box. God show you what HE wants you to see in many ways other than the Bible.

Heck, Jesus didn't walk around with a Bible bashing people in the head. He spoke without quoting a Bible. So think on that!

I make generalization as not to point a finger. Being that our society is so sensitive. Sorry, if I have offended you. If is not my intention to be a stumbling block for anybody. BTW, I can make references to scripture all day long and still lead one astray. Did not Satan try and temp Jesus by making reference to scripture. Albeit his quotes were not exact. He kind of twisted it a bit. Remember how Eve was deceived. Remember a little leaven, leavens the whole lump.

BTW, Jesus did quote scripture. That was part of the reason that the Pharisees were so heated with him.

Go and find out what the "thinking outside the box" really means.

If you throw a rock into a pack of dogs the one that barks the loudest is the one you hit.

You don't have to speak in riddles to me. If you are accusing me of doing what you state, say that. I don't mind you pointing your finger at me, for I am aware that simply because you point it, does not make your accusation true.

I wanted you to expound upon why you felt reading a book other than the Bible was so wrong. Also, are you suggesting that even if you read the Bible and no other book, then you will be perfect, made whole, born again, and saved? I'm just asking. I am not debating.

Don't worry about offending me. Just bring forth the knowledge you have. Also, you're speaking of my quote about "thinking outside the box..." I do have an understanding of it and it is a personal one that does not concern you. Further, you may take it to mean one thing, when what is in my own heart is so far from what you think.

My opinion is to read everything you can get you hands on, TAKE WHAT IS GOOD AND LEAVE THE REST.

Chad

As I said that bible is our road map back to God. However, there are a number of books that makes the scriptures easier to understand. I enjoy reading books by the following authors

Thru The Bible - J. Vernon McGee
Various Books by - Max Lucado
The Message of The Bible - Various Authors
What does The Bible Teach - R. A. Torrey
God's Plan for Man - Dake

While they are not the bible, they provide an insight on how other view the bible. Thet also provide some research information, that I do not have time to do.

My other favorites are:

The twelve Apostles
The Answer Book - Creation vs Evolution
The Expanded Panorama Bible
The Genesis Solution
The Lost Books of The Bible

If it was not for me reading, my knowledge of certain topics would be limited or non existance.

Oh! I have also read three times "Great Books Of The Western World" by Encyclopedia Britannica. 54 Books, that range from Homer, Aquinas, Kepler, Tolstory, Tactitus, Dante and the list goes on.

Anytime, anyone limited themselves they limited the world in which they live in.

J4J,

All I am saying is that most would do better by putting more time into their bibles. Books are fine. Hey other books are great. My wife has even written two books. I have a whole library of books (mostly reference books). But like books from the Word of Faith authors and such fly off the shelves even though they or very unsound and very contradictory to scripture. Feel-good books that tickle the ears but have no substance. If more study was put into daily life church-folk would not hold these books in such high esteem. They probably would not even by them.

BTW, you are not the only one that has used "think out-side the box."

How about if I just go back over here and keep quiet?

LOL....No Chad...Keep talking, I am enjoying this. Finally it's you two and not me and Dr. H. Carry on.

Oh, If I may just add my 2cents in.....I agree with you Chad to a certain degree. If people stick with the bible then yeah, more people will be exposed to only the truth. But if a person knows the truth, and can decern spirits effectively, then a book will not hurt them. Some books are true and some are false as we all know. If a person isn't full of the pure truth then a book that teaches or elaborates on lies will possibly confuse the person or misslead a person. I read alot but mostly books by people who share in similar or the same beliefs as I have. I read other books sometimes but I don't spend much time reading other books out side of the Apostolic faith.

You know, the more I think about this Chad, the more I am beggining to agree with you. You know, My Bishop told me once that "SOMETIMES WHEN YOU GO TO SAVE SOMEONE ELSE FROM DROWNING, YOU END UP DROWNING YOURSELF ALSO." So, there for, it's not alwayse wise to listen, talk to or read things from resorses that are not biblically true for too long. So I guess, I do agree with u Chad for the most part. Only if you are talking about books that teach things that are untrue, unless you are studying untrue resorses on purpose.

I am in college working on a Phd in Aeronautical Enginering, where in the bible can I turn to that will tell me how to work my problems in Aerodynamics, Structures, Material, Physics, Hydraulics, Pneumatics or Avionics? Iam sorry, the bible does not specifically address those topics. Why, they are not required as part of our spiritual welfare. Now, if Iwanted to know something about God's opinion on witchcraft or adultery then I can go to the bible and I can also purchase a secular book on the same subject.

My daily secular job is a Transportation Specialist and Project Manager, where in the bible can I read, that will help me keep abreast on the latest development in my chosen field.

Yes, I beleive.

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Phil 4:13

However, I am responsible for seeking the secular knowledge, that will work work with Phil. 4:13. God, will not open my head and pour in the knowledge of my job unless He see I am making an effort to learn. The same applies spiritually, God will not open your head and pour in His word, unless I study his word.

Chad, DWAYNE

The Bible if for our spiritual education not for our secular education. However, the bible teaches us, how to depend on God that make assist us in making our secular education / job much easier.

This is probably one of my last posts that I will post on this board because it seems there is a search for agreement but not really a search for truth. I can hear the applause now with J4J leading the applause...:shh: I will let you guys have it. But, first let me ask Dr. H why do you continue to try and spin what I write? Who are you trying to fool? And what does your education have to do with what I wrote? I have a M.S. in Industrial Engineering and at onetime was a Commissioned Army Officer. What does that have to do with the bible??? NOTHING!!! I am sure you can read and if that is the case go back and read what I posted. Did I not make mention of books supposedly on spiritual things that had no substance, filled with false doctrine? But you come in here like a spin-master throwing out your resume. What gives? I was very clear in what I wrote, sir. But anywho, carry on...

Interesting?

Chad:

Sir, you have me mistaken with someone else. I do not purport to own the phrase. I am telling you that the reason it is in my signature is dear to me.

Secondly, I do not hear this applause that you claim is being led by me. I am not for nor against what you say. I only sought to understand you better. If you choose not to lend you knowledge or opinion, so be it.

Now. as for my opinion of what you write, I think it may be necessary, for some who believe the only book of substance is the Bible, to simply read only the Bible. Now for those who understand that God is omnipotent and omnipresent, read what you may, simply pray and ask God for Spiritual or Devine discernment. It a "feel good" book causes Joe Schmoe to come to God, all praise be to God!

Lastly, own what you say and don't back down. If you have an unpopular opinion, stick around after you state it, you may learn something or you may be one of God's instuments to teach someone else a thing or two.

There is no limit to what God can do.

The only reason I put the topic in a new thread was so that those threads can stay on their intended topics.

All that God made was good.

Chad

Your comments were condeming those that read religious material other than the bible.

I am not trying to "throw or impress" anyone with my education. I was using that as an example in an attempt to show there is a sifference between reading / studying the bible and reading / studying from a secular text.

By the was I am not working on a PhD in Aeronautical Engineering, I used that as an example.

The only spiritual book that I read is the bible, however there is nothing wrong with me reading with a book written and published by "Bob Lewis" that have scriptural reference as it foundation. That does not mean that I will use it as my guideline.

I hate to go here but I must...

DO YOU PEOPLE KNOW HOW TO READ AND COMPREHEND?

Did I not make mention of what type of books were in question? Did I not also state that I had a library of books myself? Albeit mostly reference books (about a 60/40 split :shh: ). Didn't I also state that my wife has written two books of her own? Hey, I even own bible software that is filled with books such as Greek Tutor, Hebrew Tutor, QuickVerse, Ilumina, J. Vernon Magee Electronic Library, Nelson Electronic Library, Encyclopedia Judaica, Libronix Digital Library System etc. But you folks come at me stating that I have a problem with ANY BOOK other than the bible. I did state that it would be beneficial if more time was spent in the bible than these other books.

J4J,

No, I have you clearly identified. Com' on you know you wanted to clap. :wavey: :gift:

Dr. H,

I haven't condemned a soul. :slap:
