JACKSON, Miss. - Northrop Grumman Ship Systems and Jackson State University are joining forces to provide opportunities for scholarship, employment and research.

The state's largest private employer and the university are scheduled to sign a memorandum of understanding Monday on the Jackson State campus.

"We get a chance to strengthen our school of engineering with a high-quality addition to the faculty, expand our research program and create more learning and job opportunities," Jackson State President Ronald Mason said.

According to the agreement, included are employment opportunities through engineering, business, computer science, accounting, psychology, human resource management, information technology, quality assurance and logistics.

University officials say Northrup Grumman is to provide $10,000 annually for scholarships and $250,000 in 2005 for a Northrop Grumman professor of engineering and a post-doctorate research professor.

The engineering professor will lead a center for high-performance computing of ship systems engineering to be established in January.

"The opportunity for our students to work anywhere with the Northrop Grumman corporation has opened up," Mason said. "It really is a good thing."
