Jones steps into spotlight for J-State

Receiver catches 7 for 173 yards in Blue-White standoff

Jackson State football coach Robert Hughes has been predicting big things from Chris Jones ever since Jones arrived on campus.

The nifty receiver showed why Friday night in JSU's annual Blue-White spring game at Newell Field.

Jones hauled in a game-high seven catches for 173 yards and two touchdowns ? all in the first half ? in a game that ended in a 18-18 tie.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound redshirt sophomore caught a variety of passes, showing no signs of a hamstring injury that limited him throughout the spring.

He made a diving catch on a bullet pass from Robert Kent at the 1-yard line, setting up his own 1-yard touchdown grab on a fade route in the corner for the White team's first points.

On the White's next possession, Kent and Jones hooked up again on a 70-yard scoring pass. Jones out-jumped cornerback Michael Cooley for the ball at about the 30-yard line, came down with it, kept his balance and sprinted toward the endzone.

Later in the half, he caught a ball in the flat and weaved his way for a 25-yard gain, then a few plays later caught a 10-yard slant route.

At that point, former JSU standout receiver Sylvester Morris, now with the Kansas City Chiefs, turned to someone on the sidelines and said: "I like that dude, No. 3, he can play."

That's something those who have watched Jones the past two years already knew. He showed some signs last year, although quality playing time was hard to come by with the likes of T.C. Taylor and Lawrence Story. With those two now gone, Jones is the most likely candidate to step in and start at one of the two outside receiver positions, giving Kent another big-play threat to go along with Tim Manning.

"Chris is a great player," said Kent, who threw for 407 yards and two touchdowns. "I expect him to become one of my go-to-guys next fall. It's just a matter of him getting into the game. I know he can make plays. That's why I kept going to him tonight."

Jones made countless big plays during his career at Noxubee County while playing quarterback, running back, wide receiver and defensive back. Although he was selected to play in the Bernard Blackwell All-Star Classic, he was overshadowed that season by the likes of Antonio Hargro, Chris Collins and Trey Fryfogle.

Mississippi State and Ole Miss showed interest early during his senior season but backed off. Jones chose JSU, where he hopes to become the latest in a long line of great receivers.

"That's one of the things that motivates me," said Jones, who was timed at 4.3 in the 40-yard dash earlier this year. "I work hard every day to try to prove those people wrong.

"I know I've still got a lot to work on and a lot to learn, but I feel real confident in my abilities."

So, too, is JSU offensive coordinator Darrell Asberry.

"Chris made some tough catches tonight," Asberry said. "I'm looking for him to step in and make big plays for us, and follow in the footsteps of some of the other receivers we've had here like T.C. (Taylor) and (Lawrence) Story.

"He's such a good athlete. He's got good size and he runs well. And the thing that Chris does so well is he goes up and catches the ball at its highest point."

Jones was held without a catch in the second half as the Blue team rallied from a 18-6 halftime deficit.

Backup quarterback John Flen (239 yards, 3 TDs) threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Michael Johnson late in the third quarter to pull the Blue team to within six. Flen then threw a 12-yard scoring pass to Robert Jacobs ? who is expected to start at the other outside receiver spot opposite Jones ? to knot the score at 18-18.

Manning had five catches for 140 yards for the White team. Running back Charles Lee led the Blue with a game-high 104 yards on 12 carries.

Vince Davis had two interceptions, one at the one-yard line in the fourth quarter to halt a potential go-ahead score by the White.

Wi\ait a minute.....

What about the defense? Was there any being played? No smack please.

I wondered the same thing. I know what the offense can do but, I wanna know if we have truly improved on Defense..... They left alot to be asked. I am sure the TRUE fans that went will come to the board and give inputs.

If one qb threw for 407 and the backup threw for 239, there could not have possibly been ANY defense played. That is 646 passing yards and they didnt even mention rushing yards.

That's what I was thinking, too.

How do you write a whole article and not mention the other side of the ball. I thought that there would atleast be some running game going on. All the stuff that Get Ready and Tigerpride was saying......

I'm not surprised......

September is only a few month's away. Somebody better get that defense hitting on all cylinders before the USM game or it's lights out! I truly hope they don't let them caucasions run the score up. No smack! I don't like USM at all.

WAS IT GAME LIKE SCRIMMAGE WHERE THE 1ST STRING OFFENSE PLAYED THE SECOND STRING DEFENSE AND THE 2ND STRING OFFENSE PLAYED THE 1ST STRING DEFENSE?

OR WAS IT LIKE ALCORN WHERE THE OFFENSE PLAYED THE DEFENSE AND JUST ALTERNATED PLAYERS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL AND THE DEFENSE CAN SCORE FOR STOPPING THE OFFENSE IN DIFFERENT ASPECTS.???

It was 1st offense vs 2nd defense and 1st defense vs 2nd offense, but not all 1st defense people played I don't think. But from what I hear from former players and other people they've allowed to watch practice and scrimmages the D is supposed to be tight.

Mike, do you want real answers or philosophical statements? I know you are not asking for a REAL ANSWER. The nerve of you.

Just because of Mike, I won't give any answers. I will do better than him though and at least mention football.

Both QB's looked good. In fact at some points, I thought Flen looked better than Kent-especially since he was going up against the first string D. Our RB, I think his name is Lee, looked just like Counselor out there. If JSU wants a running game, we can have one. Trey White got in the game for two plays. When Counselor and Nate get back, he will be fifth string and will need to be switched because both Cox and Lee are waaaaaaay ahead of him.

The defense did pretty good. They were HITTING, gettiing sacks, intercepting balls, etc. We just have a big play offense with speedy receivers and RB's. I can tell you this, the offense won't be stopped again this year and if you ain't got Flen, Kent, Manning, Jones, Counselor, Nate, Jacobs, and Ross on your offense, you won't score 18 points.

Mike, ya'll suck.

TP you are ignant!

I asked why wasn't there any mention of all the stuff you just said and you still didn't say much about the defense, CLOWN!

Why do you have to consistently be an ignoramous when someone says something that's obvious? I said that I was not smacking. I just wondered what was up with the defense. The article left that part out and it seems as if the reason was because they are sorry, just as I figured.

Your smoke and mirror routine is not working here, dude. So, stop playing with yourself in front of all of these people on the boards. If you want to say that I know nothing, FINE! Atleast I got enough sense not to open my mouth and tell everybody the same lies that you tell year in and year out.

BTW

If what Sonic 98 said is true, then your first team defense is sorry as "L", too! From what he said the first team defense was scrimmaging against the second team offense. I'm giving your offense the benefit of the doubt by saying they are good, but from the article I can come to the conclusion that your defense is doing the Monica Lewinsky big time on both strings.

Don't jump up and get mad because I can read and comprehend. They teach that at AAMU. I don't know what they taught you in jackson.

Read Dude!

Stop asking me things your retarded butt already know. I'm sure you saw the depth chart this morning. Why do you continue to ask me questions?

TP, go ahead and tell everyone the truth for once in your life. jsu is having defensive problems, aren't you? We know it, but you continue to try to hide it. I'm not trying to smack with you. But you are taking it that way. I'm just stating what is obvious to the ordinary reader.

Mike, I just went to Al.com and I did not see a depth chart but I did read where your coach has basically said that your spring was a waste. Mike, in the game last night, we played 4 quarters of football and both teams only scored three TD's. If that is bad, tell me why. No, we are not having defensive problems. Yes, we gave up some big plays but who else in the SWAC are going to have Counselor, Kent, Nate, Manning, Jacobs, Jones and Ross?? You all don't even have a QB and I am telling you that at one point, we sat there wondering if we were ever going to get the offense to leave the 20. Unless a team gets a lucky break and recovers a fumble or get an interception, they won't be scoring. They dayum sho won't be marching the length of the field. Our LB's and DL are faster than they have been in a long time.

Mike, the mere fact that we could play our game like this tells you that we have depth. This limited our ability to rotate a whole lot. This time last year we did not even have 10 guys to have two o-lines. What you need to notice is that both teams are about even. Actually, the halftime score was 12-6 and the blue team did not score that on offense so the first string D did not give up a TD in the first half...much like it did most of the scrimmage. Imagine what is going to happen in a real game when we can rotate these guys out and keep them fresh. I am sure you will say that is not important 'cause you don't know jack.

Mike, I am not taking what you say as smack but I can't believe that you would have the nerve to even ask a question when you won't even answer one. Last week, I asked you a quetion about your team and you did not say one thing about football. YOu told me something about an unknown leader. As far as I know they got a new chaplain or something.

I SEE THE LYNCH STREET LIES CONTINUE

This hate is sad.

Mike, I went back and saw your depth chart and I had to :bawling: .

Mike, how many times do I have to tell you that having three people signed up to play a position does not make you three deep. You all look to be in terrible shape. Mike, your o-line averages about 270-280 lbs. DOn't expect to have a running game or to be able to protect those QB's. No wonder the dayum QB can't can complete but 30% of his passes and your defense looks all world.

..speaking of defense: Mike, these could not be your DE's.

Right end Martinez Shaw 6-2, 220, Jr.

Lieutenant Dukes 6-3, 200, Fr.

MIke, I think Cooper put better teams on the field than this. Then you have a MLB who was admittedly sad last year and is now performing well against your sad 0-line. Mike, now i see why you won't say nothing.

:bawling:

Lietendant Dukes is the same player that Jackson State people on the board last year SWORE had signed with JSU because your newspaper had his name on your signing list. Laugh all you want to. Your defense gave up damn near 700 PASSING yards in one damn scrimage game. Next thing you know, you will be saying that you have the best dbs in all of college football.

It was 1st offense vs 2nd defense and 1st defense vs 2nd offense, but not all 1st defense people played I don't think.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the game was slated to be 1st string offense vs 1st string defense, and 2nd string vs. 2nd string. I think the White team consisted of 1st string offense and 2nd string defense, while the Blue team consisted of 2nd string offense and 1st string defense.

I haven't gotten a detailed report of the spring game, but I'm not greatly alarmed by the stats. I put more stock in the final score. JSU's offense has been potent for years now, and Robert Kent is, well...... Robert Kent. Realistically, how many teams are going to hold him under 20 points over four quarters? He's usually good for 350+ yards in his worst games. Also, contrary to popular belief, he has a more dangerous receiving corp now by virtue of the fact he'll be less likely to force the ball to two guys. (I for one was happy to see Taylor and Story leave.) Manning, Jones, Goss and company can play.

The defense still has a ways to go, but it's definitely moving in the right direction with added speed and aggressiveness. Last year at this time it wasn't forcing turnovers or stopping people in the red zone. There's already a noticeable improvement in those areas.

I think this was a positive spring, and I have no reason to lie. I certainly don't mind calling out garbage when I see it.

Mike, in the game last night, we played 4 quarters of football and both teams only scored three TD's.

I guess they didn't even try to kick extra points last night. Did anybody even punt or did they just trade field position all game?

Thank God those soccer players are on the way.

Let me help you guys out here.

This is not the smack board, but if I were you other guys, I would be very afraid after seeing what I saw yesterday. Dont let 400 yards of garbage time yards fool you. The starting offense only scored 2 TDs all night(the other was a defensive TD on some bogus fumble return), and could barely move the ball til the second qrt. The thing we have been missing for the past 2 years, a pass rush, has been solved. Bobby Bell and Bobby Mays are bookends that can get to the QB. The LBs are deadly and deep, and the defensive line is fierce. Actually, I was hoping that with the licks they were passing, they wouldnt really hurts somebody, even Kent wasnt safe. Our QB is not good enough to not play in the Spring Game yet. maybe one day......

Greg Johnson has put in some of his new defense and Im impressed. He is using practical schemes, blitzing, and hiding coverages. Im telling yall, this is not going to be pretty. But Im sure, all you guys want to hear is 400 yards passing. To each his own......

And what I have been preaching to other people on this board is this......hear me now. We already have at least 2 of everything. The leading rusher in the game, ran behind the SECOND string line. John Flen, the back up QB, is ready and would start for any other team in the SWAC.

Our starting offense could only score 2 TDs with Manning, Jones, Kent and Gordon....what is the rest of the SWAC going to do?

DaHill, do you understand just how dumb you sound. THAT'S 700 YARDS COMBINED. Just in case you are too slow, AN EXAMPLE OF THIS IS TO TAKE THE PASSING YARDS FOR A GAME AGAINST JSU VS AAMU and add them TOGEHER. So no matter how you slice it, it ain't like my team gave up 700 yards through the air. Please don't tell me that you are too dumb to understand this.

Also, I don't give a dayum about whether or not we recruited Dukes or not, HE WOULD NOT BE SECOND STRING DE IF HE WEIGHS 200 LBS. If he had some speed, he might be second string safety.

Mannnnnnn......

These analysis are just getting worser as it goes. I'm afraid to see what you are gonna say when the season starts.

:lmao:

SO is it safe to say that you didn't attempt any type of kicks Friday?

I see where both teams scored three touchdowns but only had 18 points. Does that mean you missed all three extra points or you just didn't try any?

Do you have a special teams yet or do you have to wait for the soccer players?
