JMU to offer COA for all sports starting in 2019

bruh you REALLY think them white folks gonna go to Jackson and Montgomery to play HBCUS?!
wtf you smoking son

in a perfect world that would be ideal, but it isnt!
A few things.
When Dr. Fredrick, former AD, moved bama state to the swac from the siac, there were plenty who opposed the move (the one you have in this thread advocated undoing, not just for bama state, but the entire swac & meac as well). As a result of that decision the hornets have competed in many ncaa tournaments in recent years. I sat in the stands of the acadome (a building that wouldn't be there if the hornets were dII) when alabama should have been beaten by the hornets & the lady hornets did beat alabama on that same floor.
My people parish for lack of vision or you have not because you ask not. some of us just want more. I don't want to be the best black school, or team, or teacher or dad. I just want to be the best. I want to compete at the highest level and win and I don't mind confrontation to get there. You have seemingly decided what they aren't going to let you do & ok just competing against hbcu's.
One of our schools is going to move up. It's going to happen. They will face opposition, stumbling blocks & hardships. Every bit of state leadership will oppose bama state or jackson state, or southern stepping up to challenge PWIs for the best of black talent. When one of our school cements their standing on that level though, the kid considering an hbcu when he's a 5 star will commit, enroll & compete. Ben Simmons will look at lsu & southern and laugh when considering is it better to be on lsu's campus or southern's campus for one year. (BTW, when they can't stop it, they're going to try to co-opt the school & strip away the identity of african heritage.)
Maybe I'm am an idealist. What I know is we have what it takes to not just compete but to win. We are only here b/c our folks were survivors & overcomers. That's what I learned from the 2 hornets that raised me. That's what was re-enforced @ alcorn & that's what I'm smoking. Do you want to hit that?

None of us are competing for national championships though. This would be different if we were winning NCAA tournament games in some sports (basketball, baseball, softball, etc), but we are ALL still just "HBCU good" at the D1 level, regardless of what anyone in here says.

My point is, if we're not going to do what it takes to compete on a national level in Division 1, there should be no shame in attempting to compete nationally in D2.

What HBCU has played in a D1 national title game in the last 25 years?

UMES has won 3 national titles in bowling in 2008, 2011 and 2012. AAMU was runner up in 2006. UMES was runner up in 2007

If we had a REAL fair and unbiased FCS polling system, NCAT should have been co-champs last year in football (with a win over a FBS team and only undefeated FCS team)

As I said in the other thread, some of us need to stop being so football centric and so negative towards our own

As others have said, you can forget about national TV deals and exposure at the D2 level unless you make it to a title game. MAYBE the Bayou Classic can still be on TV but the Celebration Bowl and other TV games you can forget about. You can say we aren't "competing" at the D1 level but running to D2 would be the classic definition of running away from competition.

Regarding championships...what 662 said. BTW, very few schools compete for a championship regardless of sport. Using that line of reasoning 90% of any given conference in any given sport should drop down (UCF comes to mind as they were excellent last year & given no shot...guess they should move down). Can we do better on this level? Yes, and a lot of that has to do with the non-sports side. As our graduates improve their academic status and give back our athletics departments will improve. As we build wealth in the African-American community people can buy season tickets, join booster organizations, & support the programs.
Our institutions will always face headwinds that pwi do not. My uncle was a university president in Indiana, a graduate of bama state. He never wanted to come back to bama state or an hbcu and do that job however, b/c in his words they were always underfunded and he'd have to spend all of his time fundraising. So, yeah, state-supported black colleges in the south almost by definition, are going to have funding issues. In order for our schools to compete on the athletic fields in a meaningful way we are going to have to see our alumni compete in the workplace & the political arena in a meaningful way (as an aside, that fool GA congressman that borrat got to use the N-word was at bama state on the tennis team for a minute...at that some stuff).
There is work to do but we can compete. 2 years ago coastal carolina won the baseball championship. ucf laid claim to last years football title (I know...but whatever) & butler made it to 2 national title games in hoops). We..can..do..this.

2 schools in one sport. Come on man.

I used to dislike that idea, but the more time goes by, I wouldnt mind it. If the whole SWAC was D2, the conference would be one of the top D2 conferences and in the hunt for national titles in a lot of sports.

Problem is pride, division and general negro mess
Why do you assume that? At D2 every school's budget would decrease because we would be funding almost 30 less scholarships in football. Funding levels wouldn't remain the same. Plus we'd be getting way less football guarantee money and ZERO NCAA tournament money (for the conference and the schools).

As good as NCAT was last yeat, it would have not been right to name them co-champs without them even participating in the FCS playoffs.

Same would apply to ALL of D2. The playing field across all sports is much more even at a lower cost which frees up money to improve facilities and pay coaches.

Now there's pros and cons to both D1 and D2, but D2 isn't some hell hole that a lot of folks make it out to be.

Fewer sports to sponsor, reduced budget, but also the perception of D2 means less exposure than we’re currently getting.

You can forget about home and home win traditional D1 HBCU rivals. Either go to them or play at a neutral site. Also, it’s hard enough recruiting in FCS. Moving down to D2 would make life even harder going after HS recruits. Oh , the NCAA kinda increased the standards for D2 eligibility recently as well.

Remember this, about 70 percent of D-1 isn’t winning a championship in football or men’s basketball. Baseball and softball is still more regional (with Power 5 schools claiming an ever increasing share).

HS recruiting would be offset by D1 transfers

I think we have some folks who prefer the good ole days when their school not long ago played at the D2 level. How do we expect Black folks to compete in anything as long as we continue with the regressive attitude??? I guess the 'good ole days folks' are saying they rather be a big fish in a small pond instead of a little fish in a big ocean, but what they failed to realize, a little pond has a limited amount of water and food supply, whereas a big ocean has an abundance amount of water and food supply. Black people need to find ways to make use of the abundance of the vast oceans and stop with the crabs in the barrel mentality.

there should 3 levels in divison 1..the P5, G5 and FCS.
Why in the hell does the G5 conferences decide to stay in FBS when they have no shot at all to make the playoffs is beyond me. they can form their own level and create a playoff.

If the NCAA goes to that model then might as well do like in soccer and have promotion and relegation.

Let’s say for example the SWAC aligned itself in a pyramid with the SEC being the top level, Conference USA being the middle level and the SWAC being the bottom. The two worse teams in the SEC would be demoted to Conference USA and the two worse teams in Conference USA would be demoted to the SWAC. However, the top two teams in the SWAC would go up to Conference USA and the top two teams in Conference USA would go to the SEC.

That would make for one big 36 team conference that have groups. Also you would have to elevate and drop universities not teams. Which causes hellava scheduling problems. Just think Ala St and PV would move up to conference USA because of Cup scores and Charlotte and UTSA have to move to the SWAC.

The issue with that is.. there's one thing with just not being at the top regularly and being at the bottom regularly. If I told you that there are only 2 fcs conferences that haven't had a single team to make it to the final 8 in football in the last 20 years, you'd already know who I was talking about without me telling you. That's just..bad.

What are we collectively doing to make use of the abundance of the vast oceans?

No it wouldn't necessarily be level. I seriously doubt any SWAC school would continue funding at their current level, except maybe those with the lowest budgets like Valley and AAMU.

No way would Bama State or SU be able to justify spending $13M-17M at the D2 level.

Your OWN quote. You didn't say what sport. You said a HBCU playing for a national title. UMES (a HBCU) has won D1 national title in past 6-7 years.

As I said before, negative mindsets with many only centered around football.

Bro, please don't get me wrong. That's great what UMES and AAMU did in those sports. But why is wanting better considered negative?
Nearly every year, the SWAC rep gets beat to sleep in the NCAA tourney. A while back, I mentioned how we should put more resources into basketball so we can increase the conference profile nationally (mens and womens).

I want to see our schools going deep into tournaments and beating schools with similar resources on a meaningful basis. Why is this negative?

I understand where you're coming from.

The conference should enact strategies to increase the RPI and make our teams more viable for postseason play. The schools will argue that their budget-strapped and gotta play those get-your-head-bashed-in-games to make ends meet. However, the investment in basketball is less than that of football and should have the biggest return on investment.

RPI is highest during OOC because of those games. There's more weight put on your strength of schedule than there is on the games you win.

I would like to see our basketball teams steal wins from MVC, other mid-majors and other one-bid league teams. Really have a multi-year plan to build the conference.

Right. And see... the keyword is investment. Schools will have to make investments with the expectation of return rather than sandbagging and hoping for the best. Coaching salaries will have to increase.

We are not getting the guys we used to get. Every decent high school hooper plays AAU so there are no more hidden gems. Kids want to win, & I'm not talking national titles, but they want to play for squads that have winning records that beat other teams on their level. When you play 10 money games & go .500 in conference, your record is going to suck. No one wants to be a part of that every season. Some of us are going to have to face facts. If we don't support our program with dollars, they will forever suck. You don't have to have a huge arena (gonzaga's new arena seats 6k, butler seats 9k), but you do need butts in the seats to 1. financially support the program 2. make it financially possible to host guarantee games & 3. to create a home court advantage.
