Bobby Jindal's Stimulus Lies

By Nick Baumann | Tue February 24, 2009 7:41 PM PST

Bobby Jindal, the Republican governor of Louisiana, gave the GOP response to President Barack Obama's speech to Congress Tuesday night. I'll leave the analysis of how Jindal did to David Corn, but it's important to note that Jindal repeated two fairly common Republican lies about the stimulus package. Here's the relevant portion:

[The stimulus includes] $8 billion for high-speed rail projects, such as a magnetic levitation line from Las Vegas to Disneyland, and $140 million for something called "volcano monitoring".
The truth is that the stimulus bill does not allocate any high speed rail money for specific projects. In fact, any stimulus money for high speed rail would be allocated by Obama transportation secretary Ray Lahood—a Republican.

Bobby Jindal Is Kenneth The Page

As our friends over at Buzzfeed pointed out: The blogosphere was atwitter last night with comparisons between Bobby Jindal and Kenneth the page from NBC's "30 Rock."

Andrew Sullivan found that if you closed your eyes during Jindal's response to Obama, you were sure to see sweet Kenneth Parcell's face float through your head. Sullivan went on to say that he "can barely count the number of emails making that observation."

Parts of Jindal speech untrue...

http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/02/jindal_admits_katrina_story_was_false.php

Looks like the game is up. Remember that story Bobby Jindal told in his big speech Tuesday night -- about how during Katrina, he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with a local sheriff who was battling government red tape to try to rescue stranded victims?
Turns out it wasn't actually, you know, true.
In the last few days, first Daily Kos, and then TPMmuckraker, raised serious questions about the story, based in part on the fact that no news reports we could find place Jindal in the affected area at the specific time at issue.
Jindal had described being in the office of Sheriff Harry Lee "during Katrina," and hearing him yelling into the phone at a government bureaucrat who was refusing to let him send volunteer boats out to rescue stranded storm victims, because they didn't have the necessary permits. Jindal said he told Lee, "that's ridiculous," prompting Lee to tell the bureaucrat that the rescue effort would go ahead and he or she could arrest both Lee and Jindal.
But now, a Jindal spokeswoman has admitted to Politico that in reality, Jindal overheard Lee talking about the episode to someone else by phone "days later." The spokeswoman said she thought Lee, who died in 2007, was being interviewed about the incident at the time.
