Jim Harrick FIRED at UGA

just reported on ESPN, that the Atlanta Constitution is reporting that Jim Harrick has been fired and that the UGA season is OVER this year... NO SEC tournament or NCAA tournament.

here is the article from espn.com

Georgia basketball coach Jim Harrick was fired, and the Bulldogs will not participate in the upcoming SEC and NCAA tournaments, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Monday.

The school will announce the decisions at a 5:30 p.m. ET news conference.

Harrick's departure comes just three days before the Bulldogs (No. 25 ESPN/USA Today, No. 21 AP) were scheduled to play Arkansas in the first round of the SEC Tournament in New Orleans.

Harrick guided Georgia to a 19-8 record this season, including an 11-5 mark in the SEC. Georgia was on track for a third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, a first in the program's history.

Harrick's son, Jim Harrick Jr., was fired by the university last Wednesday after former Bulldog player Tony Cole accused him of sending him $300 to pay a phone bill, arranging for someone else to complete Cole's junior-college correspondence courses, and giving Cole an 'A' in a physical-education class at Georgia that Cole says he never attended nor did any work in.

A day earlier, the elder Harrick told The Associated Press, "I've never had a violation. Go ask the NCAA."

Harrick, 64, is 470-235 in 23 seasons as a head coach. He led UCLA to a national championship in 1995 and took Rhode Island to the round of eight in 1998. But NCAA problems tainted his tenures at both schools.

Harrick is facing an investigation at Rhode Island, where he coached from 1997-99 before taking the head-coaching position at Georgia.

According to court records from former athletics department employee Christine King's lawsuit against Rhode Island, the Providence Journal reported Saturday that the documents detail sexual harassment charges and allegations that Harrick changed some players' grades and arranged for players' term papers to be written by other students.

Before his stint at Rhode Island, Harrick was fired by UCLA for lying on an expense report.

Rhode Island is investigating the allegations that occurred during Harrick's time with the school, and is looking into hiring "a consultant who specializes in NCAA investigations" to help with the probe, university spokeswoman Linda Acciardo told the newspaper.

Messed up what's going on over there.

To have to cancel their season behind this mess has to hurt the players, more than anyone else.

Its amazing how the stupid actions of a few can affect so many. This is sad.

Not only does this kid not get the chance at college basketball, but also Harrick & Son are gone:
possibly his staff,
more actions by the school and NCAA
lost revenue for the school and SEC
on and on and on....

To fire the Harricks to say to the NCAA that you're "trying" to right your ship is one thing, but to deny those players the opportunity in the tournament is going overboard. They had NOTHING to do with this Harrick and Cole mess!

But if they got special concessions from the Harricks they are part it. Thats probably where this may end up heading or they may keep that part hush-hush to keep their eligibilty to play somewhere next year.

do you honestly think that some of the current players are being paid either.... that is what i think is going to come out of this as the reason to cancel the rest of the season.

They are reporting that they have found 2 other players will be declared in-eligible because of academic fraud.

They are also saying that at this time Harrick Sr is suspended with pay and not terminated pending further investigation.

St Bonaventure did the same thing. When it was found out that the player in question was admitted to the university, with a welding certificate. The A-10 decided to forfit the games he played in and not go to the conference tournament. The other players had nothing to do with this. They felt it was unfair to punish them .... and the rest is history. They quit. They shouldn't have, but they did.

This bball season has been one big NCAA investigation.

With pay. LOL

This whole thing is a racket and for the time/effort that these kids endure, they get nothing ($$$$$$) out of the deal but an education while the admins/coaches/university gets the $$$$$$ to do as they please.

Miss me w/ this BS.

Did they say who they were?????

I think they are going to find something with the mysterious transfer of Justin and Jarvis Hayes from Western Carolina.

They have not named them and they said they are doing more investigations for possible further action against more players and teachers.

This press conference is sad as L.
Vince Dooley and UGA President Adams need top be shot for that travesty they are pulling off.

No balls to fire Harrick yet, just suspend him!
LOL

And why do they insist their investigation has not concluded yet and they won't agree to any of Cole's allegations. But they go and take these drastic measures.

and DAHILL,
The players who they say committed academic fraud are Chris Daniels (homeboy :( ) and Rashad Wright.
Why do you think there's something with the Hayes twins transfer to UGA from Western Carolina. They're local guys from Atlanta.

its just not too often you see somebody transfer up from an average school to a great school... it is usually the opposite way around, especially after being named that conferences freshmen of the year. Do you know why they didnt go to UGA in the first place? I am sure you know about their story than I do since you are in the ATL area.

I dont remember the story why they transferred to UGA (I do remember a story in the AJC about them, but don't know the whys and hows they transferred to UGA) They went to Mays High.

And the "academic fraud" is based on the course that was "taught" by Harrick, Jr. He gave the players some grades.

As far as this so-called suspension of Harrick is NOTHING but a ploy. Harrick is forever gone from UGA. They are just looking for some direct connection between Harrick and the violations so they won't have to pay his contract. He still had 3 years left at 700K a year.

As a Ramblin Wreck from Georgia Tech, I will not shed a tear for UGA.

They are just covering their back for legality purposes, i.e. the Coach Knight court case via his dismissal from Indiana University. They all do it now suspend them with pay, pending a complete investigation (until the get enough information) to have them resign or quietly buy out their contract. It is all big time business. Nothing new if you ask me.

I am just listening to the talk radio and the commentator on ESPN from a local newspaper stating about the St Bonnie fiasco that the players should have given an ultimatum about they must play because they are employees of the university via their sign scholarship letter. They better becareful because their are some legal people (as well as unions) out there looking for any inside track they can get their hands on to prove what they believe, that these players should be paid ie. (employees of the university). This is the more interesting case in my humble opinion.

I figured Harrick Sr would be the next to go. The folks at Georgia will show Harrick the door as soon as they have enough dirt on him.

The really sad thing is Cole has gotten what he wanted, but can he really be happy about this? Harrick will be working somewhere a year from now as an color commentator for Fox Sports Net, CBS or some regional Sports network. What will Cole be doing a year from now?

It would not surprise me if there was something to the transfer of the Hayes' twins. It is not every semester an athletes transfers from a Southern Conference school to an SEC one. It has happened but not often.

That is really a nice way of putting it. I could go on for days talking about college sports.

Pick your battle, and pick'em wisely. What did he have to gain from all of this?

He did not gain any cool points for this. I guess he feels like he is the man now that he has started to tear down the UGA basketball program.
