James Harrison: "Participation Trophies are Worthless"

Deeeeep In The Delta.....
It's the slow time of the sports year when this is actually making waves on sports shows as well as The Today Show

I think this is much to do about nothing, but I wouldn't want to be the guy to tell James Harrison that, though.

Real Sports on HBO had a segment about this very topic weeks ago. Researchers believe it actually hurts kids in the long run.
We talked about this here years ago when parents of sorry no talent having kids started suing schools because their kids didnt make a sports team.

I have always hated the "everybody get a gold star" mentality. That dont teacha kid nothing. Just show up is all you havevto do.

And the research shows those kids struggle with adversity as young adults because they've been told they're special and got trophies for just showing up or doing the bare minimum to get by

I think it can work in CERTAIN situations on the academic sides (for students struggling with grades who could use that motivational boost).

Athletics. Can't stand it. I hated getting one my freshman year in HS lol (but I also get the highest GPA on the football team)

That was high school. These are 6 and 8 year old kids. Even when kids that age actually win championships they forget about it the next week.

I've coached rec soccer for 5 years going on 6. If we don't place in the top three we don't get jack. No after season party , nothing. My first year i gave out awards to the entire team after finishing outside the top 3. After that I said forget it.

Exactly. My sons last year playing Pop Warner, the Head coach gave the entire team an MVP trophy. I was the OC at that time. Yea, we only had 13 players which meant most of them played both ways and yea we won the Superbowl but that didn't sit well with me. I gave him my offensive MVP and the DC gave his MVP. He decided the night before he would give the entire team MVP trophies. We both said not a good idea.

I agree with Harrison, but once again, black folk have to be careful what they say because it will be twisted by conservatives/bigots for political purposes.

I give out medals for a number of different things. Heck with 13 players winning a SB I probably would have found something for damn near everyone. Damn good work there.

Defensive MVP
Offensive MVP

Yeah. During my elementary years, I'm glad we didn't get them. That's why I didn't care for it when I got to HS. By my senior year, we made it to the state in track where I earn a medal (4th place, 4X400 after 2nd place ribbons at the district, regional and North MS level)

Glad to see a lot of us agree with JH

I just wonder if he returns his salary whenever the Steelers don't win the Super Bowl. Or does he reject roster bonuses? Or does he make the kids compete for toys?
