The Jacksonville Jaguars signed rookie free agent running back Lavarus Giles to a contract today. Giles, 6-1, 230, was one of four players who participated in the Jaguars' two-day mini-camp last weekend on a tryout basis. Giles, a native of Benoit, Miss., played in all 12 games for Jackson State as a senior and finished with five touchdowns and 514 yards on 87 carries.

Also, during his collegiate career Giles participated on the JSU track and field team. In 2007 he won the 100 and 200 meter dash during the Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

 Congrats!

Good to see him get a shot. He has the physical gifts, now he just needs to learn, learn and learn to play the RB position.

He'll probably never be anything more than a special teams player, but with that size and speed he could easily turn into a great return man. He's faster than Jaymar Johnson or Cletis Gordon ever dreamed of being. One seem and it's over.

YES. He was clearly the fastest person on the field in every game he played at JSU. lol. I hope he makes the most of this opportunity.

Who declared for the draft? Did they take thier name out of that consideration?
That was Erik Haw. He didn't get drafted, and I haven't heard that he's signed as a free agent.

When Haw first came to JSU, it was assumed that he was the fastest player on the team. The coaches had players race each other 100M. Haw raced Giles. It wasn't even close. I don't know if flexibility/agility can be learned. Giles problem is that he's stiff. Otherwise, he would be a GREAT back.

Man I saw that first hand. I was at some of the practices early that first year. They had all the backs and receivers running sprints together. I remember that 100 yard first sprint. I had heard all about Haw and his speed. Him and Giles were side by side and they both tore out at the beginning. Giles finished the sprint about 10 yards ahead of Haw. :lmao:

It wasn't even close. And Haw did have good straight line speed. But Giles straight line speed is sick.

Giles is talent and speed with no vision. At the running back position, he couldn't see the holes in the defense. But he was too talented and too fast not to take a chance on him. I think he has a great chance of sticking with the Jaguars.

Is he the one who ran over gsu in the SCG (they couldn't catch him). Good luck with the Jaguars.

Not to take anything from the kid...I wish him well, but he broke a long run late because the GSU tacklers were trying to strip the ball and no one put a lick on him. They missed the strip and he set sails... But he didn't run over anyone. Keep it somewhat real... He had speed but he couldn't dodge a line in the dirt.

Actually he broke away from two people trying to strip the ball, then he ran through two Grambling defenders like tackling dummies.:lmao:

You said keep it real, lol!

Now that's what really happened. I will post the video footage if need be.
