AUGUST 27 - Save the date! As part of this year’s JSU Day of Giving, Jackson State University has set a 1-day fundraising goal of $100,000.00 for the Sonic Boom of The South. We hope we can count on you to help reach 100K in a day! Your support will help fund new uniforms and scholarships for the Boom.

We encourage all Jacksonians to #Give2JSU on August 27 and stay tuned as we announce big moves 👀 throughout the 2020-21 academic year.

The JSU Band Program is pleased to announce two new additions to our band staff team!

Mr. Brandon Jenkins will serve as Instructor of Music/Assistant Band Director. Mr. Jenkins is currently pursuing his DMA in Wind Conducting at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM). Prior to his educational advancement, he served as band director at Heritage High School in Palm Bay Florida where he developed an outstanding program and received the Brevard School District Teacher of the Year, Teacher of the Year at Heritage High School and Florida Bandmasters Association-Tom Bishop Awards.

Dr. Ramon Jackson will work in the Department of Music as the Interim Music Education Coordinator and contribute to the program as Assistant Band Director/Media and Marketing Coordinator. Dr. Jackson recently completed his DMA in Instrumental Pedagogy from the American Conservatory of Music and is currently finishing his Ph.D. in Music Education at The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). Dr. Jackson has already contributed so much to the band program and Department of Music. To mention a few, he is the webmaster and media team director of the JSU Band Program and has also been influential in assisting with several outreach programs. Dr. Jackson also acquired a Title III grant for the department securing technology upgrades in classrooms, outreach programs, and acoustic treatment for ensemble spaces.
The future is bright for our program!

We would like to congratulate Dr. Lisa Beckley-Roberts on her appointment as Chair of the Department of Music! We have had some awesome department heads in our lineage, from Dr. Dollye M.E. Robinson to Dr. Jimmie James Jr., and Dr. BRob is no exception. The Department of Music is "The home of the Sonic Boom of the South and so much more."

To all potential students interested in becoming music educators, choose Jackson State!

I'm not a JSU alum but know many. It depends on the person. I know some that say Alcorn, but most always said SU. For football SU brings a bigger crowd for JSU, for basketball Alcorn draws a bigger crowd (likely due to Alcorn alums living in Jackson). Da Boom gets the most excited to go against The Human Jukebox. So I agree with those that say SU is their biggest rival, Alcorn is a rival as well but the SU rivalry means more.

Also, the SUx bball game is always a Monday. Alcorn is not a rival to JSU. The only thing we have in common is being in MS. They are too small to be considered a rival with JSU. They lag academically and they are only good in football and that's recent. JSU is and has been a total university.

On August 27, we need your support to reach our goal of $100,000.00 raised in one day.

The Sonic Boom of the South has served as an ambassador of Jackson State University, our City, and State to the applause of audiences from Orlando to Chicago; New Orleans to Detroit; Atlanta to Vegas; Charlotte to Hollywood; and countless venues between. We invite all alumni and fans to help our students uphold our legacy of excellence by showing support during JSU’s Day of Giving.

Your gifts will help fund new uniforms and scholarships for the Boom. Let our students hear from you loud and clear this week as we kick off an exciting year for our program - your beloved Sonic Boom of the South!
