Jackson State Faces A National TV Blackout In 2014

The back-to-back champions of the SWAC East will not be on national television during the regular season.

Jackson State, who played in the last two SWAC championship games, would only have an opportunity to play in an nationally televised game in 2014 if they reach the league title game on Dec. 6.

Southern, the defending conference champs, will make three appearances on national television — two on ESPN (Louisiana Lafayette Aug. 30 and Alcorn State Sept. 27) — and on NBC for their annual matchup versus Grambling State in the Bayou Classic on Nov. 29.

Grambling State, coming off its worse two-year run in school history, will also be on three national broadcasts.

Alcorn State, Alabama State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff are the only other SWAC schools that will play in front of a national audience more than once. Mississippi Valley State and Alabama A&M each will make one such appearance during the season on ESPN.

I could realy understand if this is something that Jackson State University could control but no SWAC school has control over what games are nationally televised therefor this is not a story.......Really Kendrick come on son...

I don't understand the problem with not being on TV. :confused:

I believe that according to the SWAC contract, that a school only has to agree to the TV game once every three years. JSU does not have to be on TV if we don't want to be.. especially IF the game is on a Thursday.

Also, I would be surprised if the Southern Heritage Classic is not televised.

Exactly..The games are on a rotation. Kendrick had gotten a little bit better. Hopefully he does not regress back to his way of horrible journalism.

My question is, if it's up to the schools, why turn it down? Unless it's a bad deal.
 
I would like to see the JSU/SU game on TV too. Would be a nice game to see. I also think its stupid not to have the largest black college classic the MCC not on TV, but hey when you go Duer Sharp as your commissioner, what do you expect.

It's always a bad deal. I could be mistaken but the TV revenue is split evenly at the end of the year. JSU will get money from the SWAC for our TV package even though we are not playing on TV. I am sure SU would have turned down playing PV on Thursday night last year if they could have because I am sure you all could have made more money on a Saturday. Same goes for Alcorn this year. I am sure they would make more money by playing AlaState on Saturday. JSU typically turns ours down and I am pretty sure SU turns them down too until they get to the year when they MUST host a game...which I THINK is mandatory every three years. JSU hosted last year so more than likely we won't have to host again til 2016.
 
The ONLY way I would want JSU-SU on TV is if they don't try to mess with our kickoff time.

Also, I am sure JSU will show it on JSU-TV just like we do every week with our home games.

Right.. we don't know what type of demands they are making on us to move the game. They might be trying to give us a noon kickoff.

The host school gets a larger cut, I think Jafus posted the numbers before but if I remember correctly it is in the range of $50K.

SU and JSU feel that they'd lose more than that in ticket sales if it is on TV. I don't necessarily agree with that unless they'd be required to play the game on Thursday or early afternoon on Saturday.

JSU/ Southern in October will not get a prime time slot on any national sports channel during that month. BET would be the only feasible option for a national tv game and maybe some small network.

A 4 or 5pm game could happen on one of the many stations showing college football. BET will never show football again.

Interesting. Will do some research on it.
 
Although there is more involved than most of us understand, I still believe that a good TV time slot, a Fired up SU/JSU, would be good for HBCU football in general!!!!

SU/JSU is still one of the most attended HBCU football games every year....

I'm pretty sure it will be, not positive however. But commercials for the game have been running on FoxSportsSouth in regular rotation for the past couple of weeks. I doubt if the promoter would have bought TV time from the network if they weren't showing the game.
