Jackson State Basketball Player Quits, Didn't Get On The Bus Houston

Jackson State is entering its most important week of the season. And it’s doing so without one of its best players.

Senior center Brandon West did not travel with the team to the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament in Houston in an apparent no-show, his coach said.

The seventh-seeded Tigers (11-19, 7-9 SWAC) play No. 10 Grambling State (4-23, 3-10) in Tuesday’s opening round. JSU practiced at 7 a.m. Monday morning and then met to board a 9 a.m. bus to Houston for the tournament.

Coach Wayne Brent said West — the SWAC leader in rebounding (9.7 rpg) and second in field goal percentage (.557) and blocked shots (2.0) — showed up at practice, but didn’t participate and then didn’t show up to board the bus.

“We just brought the guys who were at the bus at 9 a.m., and we were ready to go,†Brent said. “It was no big deal. Nobody asked about it. We’ve been in this situation before. ... We’ve been doing this for the last, four or five games where he missed two or three (practices) and then he came back and played, so I’m not sure. I don’t know.â€

Actually, I didn't. However, someone from another school conveniently sent it to me near the end of the game though.

I was wondering why he didn't play against us also

I'm sure you know why you shouldn't use excuses?

Not an excuse, '06. Just a joke.

But players is right. The reason Brent has basically a new roster is because he doesn't take a lot of BS. I'm a little disappointed in this season (thought we'd do better in SWAC play), but I understand he has a lot of new players. I'll give him two more years to get this thing jumping.

Great now we can start building for next year...

Re: Jackson State Basketball Player Quits, Did Didn't Get On The Bus Houston

He has been injured. Who said he quit? (other than SOG)

I hate to break it to you but if he ain't injured NOW or didn't have something important that kept him from going to Houston then he quit.

Or it could be he broke one of Brents rules and was told he would not be going to Houston. He could still be hurt and that the reason. Either way, it was Brents decision that came after JSU played our last game. He has not played since then.

JSU has big hole in post without Brandon West
West sat out his first conference game when JSU faced Texas Southern on Feb. 17. That was when JSU won its first away game. Since then, West did not play in two of the Tigers’ last five, including the regular season finale at Alabama State. The Tigers fell to the Hornets 67-63. West was at the game but had told coach Wayne Brent his knee was hurting, Brent said.
