Jackson State’s 1-0 upset victory against No. 1-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette in the NCAA Lafayette regional Friday night at Moore Field was the school’s first in the NCAA tournament.

It was also just the fifth by a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Southern leads the way with three wins — beating top-ranked Cal State Fullerton in 1987 in New Orleans, Northeast Louisiana in 2000 at LSU and Southern Miss in 2003 in Hattiesburg, Miss.

The Jaguars’ first win was especially memorable because it came in their first NCAA tournament appearance and because closer Al Ratliff pitched a complete game in his first start of the season.

“I don’t know why I did it,†Southern coach Roger Cador said. “Maybe I had instincts. Normally, that’s not what you do. … Times were different. You could extend kids. He wanted the challenge.â€

Also the article is wrong. The SWAC has 6 all time NCAA victories, and SU has 4 NCAA victories. SU also beat A school from the show me state in a play in series in 96, I think.

Amazing how they get the facts wrong for the SWAC and MEAC, but it does not matter, JSU won anyway. This is what makes the college baseball playoffs so exciting to watch.

This might be the biggest win for the SWAC in any tourney in any sport (on paper at least). #1 team in the country and a #6 national seed (most people are not going to see that ULL might have been fraudulent just the fact that ULL was #1 with 53 wins) against a team with a 271 RPI.

Imagine the national headlines (and how crazy it would drive the Clarion Ledger) if JSU beat MSU with their own equipment
:-o

This years JSU team really deserve that win last night...Miss State is very beatable we will have to play another great game today but in speaking with the assistant Coach Chris Stamps, he said that the kids are focused...Johnson gave the team Miss State scouting report last night..They will be focused.

Where's Texas Terrrrror at? Where's DCG at?:snicker:

I gave Jackson State kudos in the other thread...

If you want me to start something, I do disagree that this win was bigger than the win over Cal State Fullerton in the 80s by Southern. I think the disparity in college baseball was much more extreme in the 1980s than it is now. There were three No. 1 seeds that fell yesterday and plenty of top seeds (see Rice, TCU, LSU amongst them) were pushed to the brink as well. A No. 4 beating a No. 1 is not too surprising and we've even seen some 'off the radar' teams make Supers and CWS in recent years, so lean towards Southern over CSU-Fullerton as a more significant win and would put the Texas Southern win over Rice in mid '00s as second.

Don't want to take anything away from Jackson State and perhaps some of you SWAC fans agree...??

The SWAC won. That is all and thanks for the history.

Hey, everyone wins from time-to-time... don't they? Shouldn't they? This is sports after all. It's almost shocking that it's been 20 games since the last win (TxSo over Rice) in a sport like college baseball. Do you think that you had no business winning? Shouldn't you expect to win? Or think that you should be in a position to win?

Craziest stat though - "-The Tigers recorded a 1-0 victory for the first time since beating Texas Southern in the fifth game of the 1981 season."

Kudos to JSU SID for unearthing that stat. And as I said on the other thread, kudos to Jackson State on the win & keep winning!

Congratulations JSU and the SWAC. What is up with this DCG person? Isn't he a SWAC supporter?

 She... she supports TSU but recently going by her posts on here and Facebook, you can tell she's got used to drinking that good water in Baton Rouge and I'm not talking about at SU either
