Lem Barney: No football in 20 years

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- Bigger, stronger and faster football players are going to kill the sport.

At least that's what Lem Barney believes.

"The game is becoming more deadly today," the Pro Football Hall of Famer said Friday. "It's a great game. I think it's the greatest game if you like gladiators. It's the greatest game for yesteryear's gladiators. But I can see in the next 10 to maybe 20 years, society will alleviate football altogether."

Barney shared his thoughts at the Sound Mind Sound Body Football Academy while sitting next to coaches such as Michigan's Brady Hoke, Michigan State's Mark Dantonio and Wisconsin's Gary Anderson along with Denver Broncos defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson.

While none of the coaches backed Barney's belief that football won't exist in a decade or two, Vickerson said the notion isn't far-fetched.

JR, he didn't exactly "retract" his comments. It was more like an apology for making them where he made them. But he stood by his statement. See comments below from today's L.A. Times . . .

Two days after the panel discussion, Barney released a statement saying that while he stands by everything he said, the youth camp was not the right place to state such beliefs.

“While I made comments I believe to be truthful it is apparent to me now that the camp was not the forum for those comments," he said in the statement. "These are the same comments I have made for years before Congress, under oath and at numerous events for retired players and it’s become second nature. I don’t want to discourage young men from their love of the game, I just want the game to be safe.

"What I said were things I feel, things that happened to me, but obviously it was not the right time or place. I have the utmost respect for Coach Hoke, Dantonio, and all MHSAA, CYO, PAL and Pop Warner coaches and I apologize to any of the coaches whom I made uncomfortable at the event. I wish all those involved in our great sport a long, healthy and SAFE career.”

Funniest game I ever heard LEM call was a JSU Homecomming back in the day on BET.

I recorded it to watch later.
Ole boy in the booth with Lem told him at one point "You might be ready to take out a Blue Pom Pom in a minute." LEM would be dam near cheering for JSU. :lol:

Lem would always scream WE scored......................and then backtrack saying JSU scored. :lol:
