I really like coming to Jackson for football games. THeir stadium is nice and it's perfect for a football atmosphere. I think the SWAC championship should be moved to Jackson.

I would agree with you but the problem with that is people in mississippi don't know how to count yet, so until they can do somthing about that forget it.

The JSU stadium is great, but B'ham as a city is better overall for the SCG.

What's good about B'ham outside of the perks they give to the conference?

... or are those perks the reason you believe that B'ham is better?

The two universities that played in the first SCG did not bring that many fans. There were many fans from bamas that were in attendance. I know that many fans went down from Huntsville in support of the game.

Now that Dr. Franks is no longer the commissioner, you should see more events surrounding the SCG.

The dumbest thing that could have happened was for New Orleans to let the SWAC Office move from the City and State. But it appears the City Officials don't care and at the same time they want us to spend big bucks for the BC.

MD,
You folks from Bama keep saying that yall brought all these fans to the SCG 1, but since both Bama schools have been there the next 3 SCGs then what happened? Now in saying that, I agree other SWAC folks were at SCG 1 for many reasons. Reason number 1 was because it was SU vs JSU. Number 2 , it was the 1st SCG and the bands were there. I bet out of the 47,000 folks that were there which I think there were more like 50k, but thats another story, anyway I bet there were only 5-7 thousand other than SU and JSU fans there. The other 40 were evenly split between both schools. If SU and JSU ends up in B-ham this year you will see for yourself. Even if one of the schools gets there it will be that way. Both schools make other folks outside of the SU and JSU family interested in coming. The game, the halftime show and just the atmosphere when those 2 fan bases get together is electric. I do agree that New Orleans was dumb to act like they did.

But back to the topic. Jackson's stadium would be good for the SCG and the city would embrace it. However if Jackson got there it would be home field advantage for them . Because their fans would turn out. Birmingham has not been kind to either Bama school vs GSU. Maybe if there were 50k in the stands with 40k being Bama fans, then maybe the outcome of one those games would have been different. Just my opinon.

Jackson vs Birmingham as a city with stuff to do after a game is a wash. B-ham is bigger, but neither city is exactly party central. So leave it in B-ham. Unless Houston, New Orleans, Atlanta or maybe Memphis or Dallas steps up to the plate with a better financial offer than B-ham, then I guess we leave it alone. I would like to see us rotate it every 2 years like some conferences do. I think the Big 12 moves their's around. Maybe Houston, B-ham, New Orleans would be the 3 cities we rotated around. Just a thought.

Mighty,

Don't waste your time, man! We've said this very thing a million times over. If New Orleans didn't give a d@mned about keeping the SWAC Exec. Offices when the lease ran out, why would they suddenly now embrace the championship football game, and other events surrounding the conference?

After they showed no interest in maintaining the hq's, we peddled ourselves to nearly every major city between Houston and Atlanta, and they all said NOT INTERESTED.

Your time is too valuable to waste in even discussing this topic.

:smh:

Are you in the SWAC office?

It was general knowledge (that was discussed on this forum) that the conference's executive board approached various cities about housing the conference headquarters. Birmingham was the only one that showed interest, thus our present location.

And NO, I'm not in the SWAC office.

Not so fast. Houston has approached the SWAC. I think BP or Jafus may have posted some info. Now what they offered or discussed, I don't know. Maybe it was just talk. But I don't remember Rudy going to all these cities asking them to host the SWAC. Atlanta would not be my choice anyway. Houston would if they really worked on it. Right now it can stay in B-ham. I have no personal issue with it. I would just like to rotate it every 2 years. Not every year, but every 2.

I had never thought about JR's point when I argue that the SCG should be in Jackson. I guess we would have the Homefield advantage if we made it.....but if you really look at it.....We will haev the homefield advantage anywhere if the other team is not Southern. think about it.....look at the SWAC -WEST as far as fan support.........and if the other team were Southern....the Jags would still show up in Jackson. Memorial is just ideal for SWAC football..and it's perfrect for the bands by the way.

now you see what JSU goes through every week with undercounts.....and we still lead in attendence. lol@12,000 at the SU- Valley game. Someone told me that was the most severe undercount ever. smh. Same thing happens every week for us. 30,000 gets called 18,000. lol.

Most severe ever is an understatement. We have been "ripped", but I guess Valley and Southern being from out of town, they saw a chance to really clown with the attendance figures.

They undercount us .................... but I have never seen one off this bad.

JR, my point is that when most SWAC fans speak of the conference, they only see JSU, SU and GSU. These fans also must realize that 7 other teams are in this conference. AAMU Fans will continue to remind those none believers that we didn't come into the SWAC to participate, but we are doing what we feel will be an integal part of this conference by competing for championships. We have met with some bumps in the roads because of some things that we feel were not justified, but we will continue to be competative.

If PVAM, MVSU, TX Sou or UAPB for example win the Division Championship the attendance may or may not be up around 40,000, therefore where ever the game is played you are going to have the no shows from other conference members.

AAMU has influenced a number of things since 1999. New ideas have been implemented and we feel that as a conference we all are going to benefit. I am sure many of you would believe that all the folks who attend the BC is from either SU or GSU, but I attended the 2nd BC and we ran two buses from Huntsville for over ten years. The trips will start again this year. I will also be in attendance at the BC 2003. I will be at every SCG, no matter where the game is played or who is playing.

In fact, I have seen the Core JSU Smackers at every SCG.

MD,
You are missing my point. I understand folks from all over come to the BC. Have been for years. Also people with no affilliation to GSU or SU that live in NO come to the game. WHY? Because the game has been marketed correctly. Why#2 is because it is New Orleans and not buctussel. I am sure those buses from Huntsville would not be coming if the BC was held in Shreveport or Baton Rouge. They come to see a Classic Game on National TV in a FUN city during a holiday weekend.

The SCG does not have that aura to it. I do realize SU and JSU will not be there every year. So should the SWAC. They need to promote that game so hard that damn near every Birmingham citizen will be wanting to go. Then it won't matter if PV played Valley. So it needs to become an event. Bigger than the game itself. To do that , you need to be in a city that folks will want to come even if their team is not there as well as having the local folks spend their money to come to the game. I love the SWAC. If I lived as close as some JSU folks to B-ham, I would be there too. But since I do travel to see my beloved Jags, I spend my money on trying to see them as much as possible. Even if they made the SCG every year, I am sure there would be times I could not go. Just as I did not attend alot of those Heritage Bowls. But I know one thing, if the SCG became such a big event in say a city like Houston then you would have folks flock to the game just for the festivities. Maybe B-ham can do that. But at this time the city doesn't have that aura to it nor does the game get promoted like it should.

JR, the meetings I attended when we first joined the SWAC, every University had territorial issues. Developing a marketing plan was not going to happened. Everything was based on who had the must influence rather than what was good for the conference. Now I don't have to go into who was on first and second base. ADs did not control very much and Presidents had to put out many fires on their campuses, so you had folks just meeting. From those first meetings to the present, I have seen many changes. We have the best conference which is made up of the best State Universities in America, but we have to allow those who are working for imporvements to get the job done. Now that other Cities realize how dumb they were in turning down 10 Top HBCUs that train workers for America they want to get on the band wagon without making a contribution.

I feel what Mighty Dog is saying about the other 7 schools, but realistically speaking....outside of JSU and SU....do you really see a game drawing 40,000+ with 2 out of state schools..... like Valley and PV.....The way I see it, those other 7 schools that you spoke of need to be taking measures to promote their individual programs and to raise the fans base.....that's the only way we will ever be able to safely say the SCG can survive no matter who's in it. In the SEC Ole Miss can take 35,000 fans to Atlanta just as easy as Florida can. Those schools....INDIVIDUALLY...promote their athletics programs in their communities and among their alumni. Valley needs to be filling Rice-Totten Stadium every Saturday...that's only 10,000 seats...and they can't do it. Until that is done....we will always have a problem with the security of the SCG. I don't think it's fair to talk about the SU and JSU folks for sitting at home when their teams aren't at the SCG.....SWAC school fans should be getting off their arse and traveling every weekend...that's when we would see growth.
We took about 5,000 fans to the country (Natchitoches) Saturday and it was a good showing for our school and the SWAC. Once you start to get numbers like that....you don't have to worry about what will happen if your team makes it to the SCG attendence wise.....you know they will be there. It's going to take some work and GREAT public relations work at these schools for that to happen though.

NT, the real problem is that 80% of fans budget will not allow them to attend games. Even home games are expensive. Some of us are blessed with an income to attend 50% of games at home. We know that more AAMU folks will travel than attend home games, because they love to get out of town, but at home they have other interests.

I would say again that AAMU revenue has increased since joining the SWAC. Selling our program is a lot easier at the D1AA level than at D2. The hard job is selling the program to those who are the closest to us. Last week game 13,000 but a few years ago it was around 5000 which to me is a big jump. All of our schools are improving, but the mindset that JSU, GSU and SU should be in the SCG to be success is changing.

There was another city trying to get the SWAC offices Baton Rouge which was Rudy's first choice but certain schools balked at that idea

no itsn't. there is no real reason for it to be here, other than it cost the SWAC nothing to use Legion Field. It will always be contingent upon who will win from the East and West if they have a good turn out or not. we need to have it in a place where no matter who makes it, the people will come

I have been to all of the championship games, and there is still one that has come close to topping the first one, (SUvsJSU). However, it could be argued that the attendance was better because of the band extravaganza. That also poses another point, there need

birmingham has no real tourist attractions, no real SWAC fan base (sad, considering it host 2 SWAC schools). I don't know if Jackson is the place, but they need to look into moving it somewhere else. I think they are
