Alabama State 61, Jackson State 58

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- Darnell Kennedy threw five touchdowns and ran for another to help Alabama State overcome Robert Kent, who passed for 595 yards and six touchdowns, and Jackson State for a wild 61-58 victory Saturday night.

The teams combined for 49 points-- seven touchdowns -- in a frantic third quarter.

Kennedy hit Eugene Johnson for a 15-yard touchdown to put the Hornets (2-2, 2-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) up 55-43 with 1:46 left in the third quarter.

But Kent found Lawrence Story from 39 yards out on the final play of the third to bring the Tigers (3-1, 2-1) to within 55-50

Kent completed 38 of 57 passes, ran for 73 yards and a touchdown, scored a 2-point conversion and threw for a 2-point conversion. He accounted for 46 points and 668 yards.

Jackson State outgained Alabama State 723-424.

The sophomore quarterback hit eight different receivers, but T.C. Taylor was his favorite. Taylor had 14 catches for 235 yards and three touchdowns.

Kennedy was 17-of-30 for 259 yards and ran for 41 yards. Larry Bias added 125 yards rushing and a touchdown for Alabama State.

The Hornets blocked two punts, returning one for a touchdown for the game's first score, and Erlin Sanders had a 48-yard fumble return for a touchdown early in the third quarter.

Machion Sanders caught an 11-yard touchdown pass, his second of the game, from Kennedy to extend Alabama State's lead to 61-50 with 12:16 left in the game.

Sanders had five receptions for 110 yards.

Kent again responded hitting LaDer Crossley with a 35-yard scoring pass with 6:04 left. The 2-point conversion made the score 61-58.

The Tigers had a chance to win the game on the final play but Kent's pass from 31 yards out went off the hands of Story in the end zone.

Story had 10 catches for 180 yards.

The Hornets have beaten the Tigers two straight after losing the previous eight against Jackson State.

This is sickening. This is what 5 lost fumbles and two blocked punts will do to you. Then add to that Bama State had the most 30 and 40 yard TD drives I have ever seen in one game. We lost fumbles on the one yard line, on the 9 yard line with 3 minutes left in the whole dayum game.

424 yards equals 61 points. A dayum shame.

And that part in the article where it says the ball bounced off Story's hands doesn't tell the story. He had no business dropping that ball. Somehow Bama State allowed him to get behind them on the last play of the game and he shoulda caught that dayum ball. But how can you complain about an offense that scores 58 points???

BTW, is this the smack board??? Y'all may as well move this thread.

I wanted to ask this after seeing Jsu against A&M

Do y'all have a DC?

"L" the Jags didn't play well at all & still managed to win...

The Jags are looking to have a complete game soon and Oct. 13 will be soon enough.

Slick Partna,

I got a funny feeling Prarie View is gonna be homecoming next year. And Bama State just may end up being the homecoming opponent again. Guess it all depends on UAPB. Gram and SU are not options at this point.

Tim Jag,

NO!!! We don't have a defensive coordinator.:redhot:

Robber,

That is a very important statement, and it proves exactly why Bama State did not roll up 700 yards or more like JSU did.

WE DIDN'T HAVE TO !!!!

People are all over this board ranting and raving about Bama State gaining "only" 424 yards to JSU's 723, like our offense was not clicking. Well, if you don't think our offense was clicking, just ask JSU's DB's.

Kenard Williams and our other kick returners returned almost every JSU kick or punt into JSU territory!!! We had a short field all day!!! If we had needed to go 80 or 90 yards, we would have done so. But we did not.

Finally, the last time I checked, the object of the game was to "outscore" the opponent, not "out gain" them.

TP,

If Bama State's offense can "easily" score 61 points on you at your homecoming, you might want to sell your tickets for the Southern and Grambling games now, and avoid the rush.

SU has already bought over 16,000 tickets for the JSU game. I seriously doubt if there's any tickets left for JSU fans. Thanks! to Bama State.

Deuce,

The point is that if Kent had it as easy as Kennedy due to field position, we would have scored 100.
