Is The 'Strong Black Woman' Stereotype Hurting Black Women?


This might sound "tin foil hattish", but I think that the people that write and direct these videos/articles have no interest in any type of advancement of thought or reconciliation of the sexes. Instead, I think that there is a "movement" that is based on ulterior motives than what we think. It could be something as simple as the messiest stuff get clicks and views or it could be that the people behind these things are purposely sowing discord.
 
After taking the time to actually watch the video, the subject isn't at all about black women blaming black men for anything. There is no battle of the sexes war here.

It's about how black women have had to put on the cloak of this so-called "strong black woman" persona to counterbalance all the negative prisms society has viewed them through, such as being mammies, these sexualized hood rats or even perpetually angry. The video examines what impact putting up that front -- having to always be strong and resilient all the time (while burying natural human emotions or constantly placing the needs of others above their own) -- has on black women psychologically and physically.

I watched the video in its entirety before I posted and I stand by what I said. These videos/articles never even consider a different point of view than the ones that satisfy the point they are trying to prove.

It sucks to constantly see media that never considers the way my father and mother interact and even the way my wife and myself treat each other as "the norm". It seems that only dysfunction in our community is considered as the only thing that exists about us.

But this could be an echo chamber problem that I suffer from myself. I am surrounded by people that I grew up and with to school with and all of us are black and married to black professional women and have healthy relationships with them and I may become clouded to the idea that this is the norm because it's my norm.

The whole video presents the idea that this stereotype exists. This stereotype exists because it's one that whites have about black women. They have this stereotype about black women because it justifies the discrepancy in how they treat black women in comparison to white.

It sucks that the stereotype that white people have seems to be the one that everyone must adhere to or that somehow we all fall under the umbrella that we have this mentality too.

My daughter(1.5 years old) has a congenital heart condition. I've seen from birth the difference in how they treat her and m wife in comparison to how they treat white patients. I know that it will be like this in every facet of their lives. It sucks that my empathy for the most important people in my life is treated like a thing that doesn't exist.

Correction this stereotypes exists because PEOPLE enforce it.

How many projects have we seen get greenlighted with blacks in charge and it showcase black stereotypes or certain images only?

There are plenty of black folks cashing in on these stereotypes. So lets not give them a free pass.
