You sound like some of the people online trashing the show.
Tony Stark only became a hero after he got kidnapped, prior to that he was just about making money.
Scott Lang AKA Ant Man, was a thief. although not as smart as RiRi or Tony.
Here's something factual for you, In high school, I was an A student and in the honors program.
I wanted to date, take girls out, and buy things for myself. I didn't have a job, so I went to one of the drug dudes in my neighborhood and said; "Hey let me run the drugs, the cops won't stop me, because I look and act like a nerd, plus I talk "white". Luckily for me that dude told me to go home, study, and make it out the neighborhood. The point being, smart people do stupid things for money!

In the case of this show, I see it as building up her heroism. remember she didn't make the suit to help people, she did it,
just because she could"!

I'm not trashing the show. She just spent all that time with the wakandas and at MIT, which is so different than those examples you posted. She know better and for that premise she shouldn't be in that situation.
