Iraq deaths put at 655,000

LONDON (Reuters) - American and Iraqi public health experts have calculated that about 655,000 Iraqis have died as a result of the March 2003 U.S.-led invasion and subsequent violence, far above previous estimates.

Researchers used household interviews rather than body counts to estimate how many more Iraqis had died because of the war than used to die annually in peacetime.

"We estimate that as a consequence of the coalition invasion of March 18, 2003, about 655,000 Iraqis have died above the number that would be expected in a non-conflict situation," said Gilbert Burnham of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in the United States.

That means 2.5 percent of the Iraqi population have died because of the invasion and ensuing strife, he said.

President Bush dismissed the report as not credible. "The methodology is pretty well discredited," he said at a White House news conference.

But Bush added: "I do know that a lot of innocent people have died, and that troubles me, and it grieves me. And I applaud the Iraqis for their courage in the face of violence."

Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh told Reuters "The report is unbelievable. These numbers are exaggerated and not precise."

Stop.......................It's not no where near that high.
Those lovable "Freedom Fighters Fanatics" have killed more people in Iraq than American Troops have.

Iraq's Health Ministery estimates only 50,000.
Bush estimates 30,000
Brooking Institution estimates 60,000.

This is the same group, John's Hopksins University, that said the bombing during the WAR.....NOT POST WAR ACTIONS..........killed hundreds of thousands and that was proven false

I believe the numbers. Bush says that we are over there to give people their freedom, but this dude is killing the people that he claims that he is freeing. I know that you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet, but Bush is killing the chicken.

Man that is a big number but were over there in a war not against a obivious antaganist but people who look like the citizens of Iraq. How many of these deaths we cause from suicide bombers killing thier own people. This in all truth is more than black and white terrrorism is a cowardly stance that can assume any persona to get close then strike. A death is as death regardless and thats sad.

If you haven't been over there then you don't know whats going on. Most of the s**t the media reports is BS. Yes, we need more troops but we can make do with what we got. All of this BS about pulling out is a joke because we sure as he// didn't pull out of Japan. We set up shop and we still over there. I wouldn't believe those numbers at all. I think Bush should stay on the offensive and keep them running. Those people are crazy azz hell over there. I saw an arab girl get beat for looking at an american sailor.

Dude.......................Bush has not set off 1 car bomb, sent 1 bomber to a market crowded with people, blown up a Mosque during prayer, kidnapped 50 to 60 people at a time and gun them down to be found laid out execution style later.

point of fact is that iraq had nothing to do with the war on terror. there was no reason for us to be there. we have to now b/c we've created the mess. those that have died, in large part, would be alive today if not for Bush and his posse running blindly into a war. be that number 65 or 655k, they'd be alive.........if that's not significant then who's volunteering to take their place?

I think Bush should stay on the offensive and keep them running.

I assumed by your statement above you participated in the Iraqi operation. Do you honestly believe we are on an offensive and have the Iraqi sectarian groups on the run??

I hope not. If that were the case why are they calling for more troops? And more importantly why are they saying they wont be able to decrease troops there until at least 2010?

Everything that goes on in Iraq, we America are responsible for it. Not just the American lives that are lost. Again proof of a failed foriegn policy.

So from what you are saying I should believe the Bush Adminstration versus the numbers that provided by John Hopkins and MIT stated, that were the numbers came from. Sorry dude and dudettes, I am going with John Hopkins and MIT. As far are you all that say that Bush isn't blowing the folks up. The L he isn't that is the fool that snatched order out of kaos. Sadaam kept order in that country. Also, I will go on record and say that we would be better off if Sadaam was still in power. I don't know why you are are buying into this Bush Adminstration proproganda. I am Republican and I dont believe it. Bush, the butt wipe is making the USA go broke trying to prove that he is right. He spent more money over than then the deficit. Don't you think that it is strange that people were not blowing stuff up over in Iraq before we invaded there.

That basically were over there fighting an enemy that's not wearing uniform so to speak, He looks like normal civillian with a bomb strapped to his body under his clothes. Its hard to fight a enemy whos willing to blow himself/others up for his god and thier purpose. This isn't normal warfare like it was back in the day, I had a gun you had a gun I shot you shot somebody died, now it's gun against bomb and Iraq's civillians in the middle literally. It's hard to fight an ememy you can't see or distinguish from everyday civillians. I think more deaths have been caused by suicide bombers, and al quida(spell check) than by the United States of America. During the press conference today President Bush stated the death toll where inflated.

Yes I participated and loved every bit of it. Yes, I do believe we are on the offensive and we should continue until we get this s**t under control. How do you tell the American people that if we don't go over there s**t can get very ugly fast? These people hate us and they have been attacking us since the mid 80's. We have ignored them and they grew stronger and gained tremendous support. I know we lost several lives and every innocent soul counts, but its nothing compared to the 600k that died in the civil war.

On the offensive? :emlaugh:

I'm just amused by the fact that they're supposedly on the offensive. Being on the offensive would mean they have the upperhand, which in turn would mean they wouldnt be calling for reinforcements...which they are.

The reinforcements are for the reliefs to get home to family. We have a terrible rotation and many are over there too long.

I guess the Bush supporters will be buying the Brooklyn Bridge, the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Mississippi River. Bush has lied from the start! How do we know whether the Iraq citizens were actually killed by Iraq's or by the good ole USA who are killing and murdering more innocent people than Sadam could ever dream of. Go and talk to men who fought in the first Gulf War and they will tell you that we destroyed most of what Sadam had and that we went in on a straight up down to the core LIE. We are there for the resource to get rich and somewhere to set up another army base.

So the question is who is responsible directly for the deaths?...U.S. forces or Iraqi's? Should this be the question?

I believe we should ask if this many deaths were occuring under Sadam. I have seen folk post stuff like the military should take the gloves off over there and suppress this rather than being "political". But wasn't this what Sadam was doing? Is that how he kept the country in check?

What's too long, you know soldiers during WWII were in for the duration.

There are 6, 9, and 12 month rotations and people are staying over the required time. Another problem is once they're relieved they don't have much time before they're right back over there. This is not just an Iraq problem. This is a world problem. People need to understand that we are hated regardless if you're for Bush or not. They don't care if you're against the war. They think if you are an American, Christian, or Jew then you should die. People need to face the fact that we are hated because of who we are.
