Inside the first nfl owners meeting

Even though most of the them did return, Brown said the he was “sickened,” and “very upset,” with McNair’s comments, via Wilson.

In one section of Seth Wickersham and Don Van Natta Jr.’s story, there was a meeting with the owners, and one adviser for each, with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. During that meeting Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke passionately and angrily about the players not standing. Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder then said that “96 percent,” of fans wanted players to stand, and McNair followed up with, “We can’t have the inmates running the prison.”

Its time for players to sit out games. The owners are drawing a line in the sand and have no leverage. The players have all the leverage.

It is past time for them to sit out. Another thing they and we have to do is stop defining what they do as a game. It has not been a game for some of them since middle school. These guys go to WORK. They Work on Sunday...they perform just like anyone else who goes to work. Either you perform or you do not have a job. A game is something you do for fun...relaxation....for the hell of it.

What is sad is it has to hit them in the gonads before they get it. *rump called them sons of grown female dogs. That wasn't enough. The majority owner of the Texans (who one of the minority owners happens to be Kirbyjon Caldwell...a Methodist minister of one of the largest Black Methodist congregations in Houston) likens them to prison inmates (and still some of us brag about being season ticket holders stuffing his pocket full of what in effect is blood money). This statement coming from him is no surprise. All you have to do is open your eyes and ears....allow yourself to see and hear and do not be in denial.

What truly chaps my ass is when dungy was wanting to be a head coach in the NFL tons of Black folk came to his support. Now some crap comes out of his mouth like this. I have said it once and I will continue to say it. If you are not going to help the cause don't hinder it.

Well maybe he's right. Either way it was very bad timing and the new word everybody like to use now . Optics

Ok, real question time.

What do you guys think all this will do for recruitment purposes for HBCUs?

Meaning, alot of younger black kids want to go to the PWIs to get seen and drafted. But do these kids want to trade their heritage for PWIs and then go to work for a business that their bosses calls them inmates? Alot of us already work for these kinds of businesses, but these businesses would be sued quickly if they talked to us in this manner.

Maybe because the nfl and the nba are totally two different entities that has no influence or control over the other.

Didn't say they did, but when the pressure was put on the NBA they made Sterlington sell. Why don't people put pressure on the NFL to make their owners sell?

The NBA has different type of owners, More progressive and diverse. They have a stronger Player's Union and better contract with the owners than the NFL does. Then lastly, Adam Silver is way more progressive as Commish. The majority of owners in NBA hated Sterling.

In NFL, the majority of owners agree with McNair.

So, they rather run out there and get all busted up for ole master?

NBA is a different beast. Look at how international those rosters are. You are no longer limited to going after American players-you are going all over the world. With that they bring in different view points. Where if one does not understand the rage behind Tamir Rice's death-talk to someone like Lou Dung or some other guy from a country where that is normal. Where protests can get you shot on the spot. It makes you think and do things different.

But that's neither here nor there.

And here's another thing:

When Sterling (Clippers former owner) said derogatory comments, they made him sell his franchise. Why not these NFL owners when they say or do things like that?

A lot of the owners agree with McNair. And a lot of the fans do, too. Plus, McNair's comments, in many circles, aren't seen as racial insensitive. They are viewed as an attack on the players of the league or a common idiom that was used poorly.

To compare that to the NBA, a lot of the star players -- LeBron, Kobe, Chris Paul and others -- were very candid in saying that Sterling had no place in the league. And NBA players, especially the star players, have a whole lot more influence and impact on the sport than NFL players do in terms of navigating the direction of league business.
