Having survived Andrew eleven years ago, I have a few helpful hints for those of you that live along the eastern seaboard but have never had to deal with a monster storm like Isabel is
first of all, get lots and lots of bottled water now ... before the fistfights break out over the limited supplies that the red cross will be passing out from the back of trucks
a manually operated can opener is very important
cans of soup and other non perishables (you can heat up a can of soup on a grill in your yard)
find a safe place to ride out the storm now (in any edifice be away from windows and doors - like a hallway or a large closet or bathroom and have mattresses to hide underneath)
gas up your cars - for AFTER the storm
batteries and a transittor radio
flashlights
beware of looters
be patient
stock up on all prescription meds and pet food
cut off your circuit breakers BEFORE you lose power from the storm
once power goes out, dont oopen your fridge unless you have to and then keep the door open as briefly as possible
more water
stay away from low lying coastal areas _ storm surges are killers
stay indoors!!!
be a good neighbor
keep your cool head
watch out for downed lines, stop signs, and traffic lights
learn how to work with other motorists to get through an intersection with no traffic control device - y'all have towork together
PRAY PRAY PRAY
also, any and all important and irreplaceable documents and photos need to be copied and placed into ziploc bags
buy durable weatherproof containers, label em, seal em
have all of your insurance docs taken care of (keepin in mind that in someplaces like fla, insurance activity has to freeze once a hurricane warning is issued for a given area)
if you can go someplace, it is worth considering but keep in mind that you may not be able to get back home right away (but with power being out for who knows how long, you may not want to)
take good photos of your car, your exterior and interior of the house and business, plus all of the valuables - especially the durable goods
insurance headaches are no joke afterwards but very helpful to prepare ahead of time cause once the winds start, it's too late
also, get a good large tarp and good durable rope
taping the windows doesnt help much but good plywood covering all of your window does (not that crushed wood crap though)
if there is anyone in your family or community that needs help with preparation (like someone old, sick, or lonely), help them!!
and pray
generators are good and helpful but necessary - also be very careful with them
also, try to have tools on hand if you can for fallen trees and such but BE CAREFUL with fallen power lines
and PRAY
