IMAC Virtual machine?

Is there a virtual machine that IMAC's currently have installed? I'm doing course work for my Cyber Security class and I need to run an executable on my desktop to be able to perform a vpn into the virtual machine. At the moment, I'm not able to open the executable because it is part of windows. I talked to one of the help desk people here at work and he mentioned that I can download the Oracle VM, which is compatible with MAC OS. I also downloaded the executable onto my dell laptop and I'm not able to open it. I double-clicked it and selected run, but it doesn't open. I was thinking the problem was due to administrative privileges, but that is not the case since the administrator tried to open the same executable on my machine today with no luck.

You probably need to install Oracle VirtualBox on that iMac, create a virtual machine with that, then install Windows to that virtual machine.

Just out of curiosity, what cyber security class are you taking?

The class that I'm taking now is Monitoring, Auditing, Intrusion Detection, Intrusion Prevention, and Penetration Testing. This is through UMUC and my final class to get my certificate in Cyber Security Technology.

I downloaded Oracle Virtual Box. I then chatted with someone from Apple helpdesk. My IMAC already has bootcamp, which will allow me to download windows 7. The network guy here at work is going to download windows 7 and provide me the download so that I can load it onto my MAC. Hopefully, this will allow me to open windows products. I need to be able to open the executable for my homework assignment and perform the VPN.

Cool. Bootcamp is a better option. It basically turns your iMac into a Windows machine. When you turn on the computer, you can hold down the Option key as you turn it on and keep on holding it down until it gives you a choice of what operating system to boot into, OSX or Windows. You can set a default operating system to boot into in the Boot Camp options and that's what it will boot into by default if you boot the computer without holding down the option key. When get the Windows 7 DVD and go through the Boot Camp setup it, will ask you how much of your hard drive you want to dedicate to Windows.

That's great man. Cyber security is big these days. Lots of money to be made too. Are you going for your CISSP, or do you already have it?

Let me ask you guys a question, which one of these programs do you think is the best to pursue? I am thinking about going back to get certified in one of these.
Computer Information Systems – Cyber Security Option
Computer Information Systems – Network Administration Option
Computer Information Systems – Enterprise Programmer Option
Computer Information Systems – Systems Administrator Option
Computer Information Systems – Web Page Developer Option

Cee, Cyber Security seems to the be a hot commodity right now. Each one of the programs you provided are good certifications to have. I would choose Computer Information Systems – Cyber Security Option

Thanks for the information.

Buck, I’ve found Fusion by VMware to be an even better option than Bootcamp. I did not say anything before because I was thinking you were looking for a more complex open-source solution like VirtualBox and thinking Bootcamp may not have been robust enough to suit your needs. Since you mention for home use, Fusion is more designed for the home user. The windows programs interact more like they are a part of the Mac OS and its dead simple. However it cost as much as $60 but I’ve seen it as low as $10 per download for earlier versions. Also, I found it to have some limitations but it’s good for a quick and dirty project that most people do for home use anyway.

Bootcamp gives him access to all system resources unlike any of the virtual options. With the virtual options (VirtualBox, Parallels, and Fusion), you have to dedicate a particular amount of memory to it for it to run at an acceptable level of performance. Bootcamp gives the operating system access to all system resources, and it's free.

True

Ok, I'm now planning to do the CISSP bootcamp. Do any of you have the CISSP? I've been checking around and the prices are about $2,500. I then take the test.

Word of advice. The boot camp alone won't properly prepare you for this test. It's a beast. The least amount of study that I've heard someone successfully passing that test was 2-3 months, and that was with experience, with most that I know taking 6 months or more. If you've invested the time in learning the material prior to the boot camp, then the boot camp can reinforce the material, but the boot camp alone probably won't give you enough exposure to the material to properly pass the test.

I have a piggy-back question. I currently run Parallels for my music software that is Windows only. It's the only program I really need Windows for. Have not really had problems with Parallels itself, but while using it, it frequently hangs when going back and forth to the Mac side. Last week, I decided I would bite the bullet and go the BootCamp route with Windows 10. Installed with no issue. Booted into Windows, and realized that I now have no access to any of the information on my Mac drive.

For the time being, I am back on Parallels. Anyone have any insight?

Interesting. You should be able to switch back to the Mac. Have you tried uninstalling Windows 10 then try to access your mac? I think at the time when I was switching back and forth from the Mac to Bootcamp, I was given an open to choose between the two. Worst cast call helpdesk. They can usually guide you in the right direction.

I think you are misunderstanding. When I boot into OSX, I can see everything. But when I booted into Windows using bootcamp, it's like I was using a brand new computer fresh out of the store. I could not access music, pics, files, ANYTHING that was stored on the OSX partition of the drive.

Oh ok. I would say call apple helpdesk. Sorry for just now responding.
