He is in the first year of a three-year contract that pays $200,000 annually, and in case no one has noticed, this is a time of severe financial strain for universities all over the state.

In Southern’s case, the athletic department took a $600,000 budget cut this year.

Keep in mind that as part of SU’s divorce with Pete Richardson last year, the school is paying him $200,000 to not coach.

If the university somehow decided to cut Mitchell loose, it would be on the hook for another $400,000.

On top of that, this is hardly a time of stable leadership at Southern.

Ronald Mason is in his first year as the SU system president; the Baton Rouge campus is in search of a new chancellor, thanks to Kofi Lomotey’s resignation last week; and the Board of Supervisors has a new chairman in Darren Mire.

The coach himself said last month that he loved coaching in the NFL, where he’d been an assistant for 11 seasons, “but I love coaching at Southern University even better,†he added.

Saturday in the Superdome, just moments after his team lost, Mitchell said he intended to be at Southern next season. In the meantime, he’s full speed ahead.

“What now? We continue to recruit. We continue to recruit, and we continue to instill discipline in these guys,†Mitchell said. “And we build for next year.â€

And boy, do the Jaguars need to build.

Questions about coaching aside, one hard truth came into focus over the course of this season: Southern was alarmingly short on talent.

Go down the list: From wide receivers to running backs, from quarterbacks to the secondary, from the defensive line to the offensive line ... Southern did not have the best players at any position on the field.
