US soldier was reportedly laughing when crossing border into North Korea

A US soldier who was being held in military detention in South Korea was laughing when he escaped his detail, joined a tour group, and fled over the inter-Korean border to communist North Korea, according to reports.

US and Korean officials identified the soldier as Private 2nd Class Travis King, according to CBS News. King, 23, was being held in custody by South Korea at the airport in Incheon, near Seoul, and in the process of being expelled when he fled.

After passing through airport security, he unexpectedly joined a tour group to the Korean border village of Panmunjom, a popular tourist spot inside the 248-km-long (154-mile) demilitarized zone, or DMZ.

A member of the tour later told CBS News that King, who was reported to be in civilian clothes, gave “out a loud ‘ha ha ha’ and just runs in between some buildings”.

Pentagon officials said that UN Command security forces who had been escorting the tour group chased King, who is from Racine, Wisconsin, but could not catch him.

US soldier runs into North Korea after assault case

The US soldier who dashed across the heavily fortified border from South to North Korea previously attacked a police car and punched a man in the face at a Seoul nightclub.

Travis King, 23, who has created a fresh diplomatic crisis for Washington in dealing with the nuclear-armed authoritarian state, pleaded guilty to assault and destruction of public goods during an incident last October and had been fined $4,000 (£3,097), according to Reuters.

Private King was this week taken by a military escort to the airport but fled at the customs area and travelled to the “peace village” of Panmunjom where he joined a tour group in the demilitarised zone (DMZ) before bolting into North Korea.

The soldier had just finished a stint in detention for an unspecified infraction and had been due to return to his base in Fort Bliss, Texas, where he faced disciplinary action by the US military.

His mother, Claudine Gates, of Racine, Wisconsin, expressed shock at her son’s high-stakes gambit.

I hope he can play basketball. Word is Kim Jong likes basketball. He can offer to teach them how to play over there and be a star.

This is really unfathomable the lunacy of this private. I have been on a DMZ tour, and the thought of being a stone’s throw away from the North Korean border is chilling enough.

I suppose the private had not heard of Kim Jong Un ordering a choir director killed by firing squad simply because he did not think the choir performance Un attended was a good one. Un liked the show and because choir director disagreed, Un had him executed with a AK-47 with each of three gunman unloading 30 rounds (in front of his family). Another account he had his uncle strip naked and eaten alive by 100+ hungry dogs.

Maybe Rodman can persuade his release.

Brother I have been there working with the DoD......man folks really don't know how prepared our soldiers stationed there are for war.

North Korea claims US soldier seeks refuge, fled 'racism'

North Korea on Wednesday claims the U.S. Army private who crossed the border with South Korea in July had "expressed his willingness to seek refuge" in the secretive country after becoming disillusioned with American society.

Private 2nd Class Travis King, 23, had been deployed in South Korea and spent 47 days in a local jail after an altercation with locals, according to U.S. officials. After his release, he booked a tour of the Demilitarized Zone, during which he ran across the border.

Seriously I wouldn't be surprised. Can't run from it in America. The military is a racist organization. Especially on the enlisted side. I mean being honest the poorest of the poorest white Folks go in to use the benefits like welfare.

Don't get me wrong. I know why he is fleeing. He was getting kicked out with a dishonorable discharge. I also know the unit he was in. Racism among enlisted soldiers is prevalent was my point. He could have taken a deal and wouldn't have gotten a dishonorable charge though. Going to North Korea was stupid, but typical among our youth today who aren't prepared to face adversity. Today's youth are babied and when momma isn't their to fight for them they can't make good decisions because they're not taught how to do that in life.

My homeboy is a retired full bird Colonel that was assigned to that unit. He had to ship a ton of soldiers back stateside. From what he stated there is a ton of stress on soldiers especially the young ones forward deployed and mobilized for combat at any given moment.
