Well Huntsville with its high tech industries is one of the best places for Afican Americans to raise their families in the Nation.

Huntsville Top City in Nation for African-Americans!

Huntsville, Ala. ---- Go North, young man!?North Alabama, that is. The Danville, Calif.-based Family Digest magazine recently touted Huntsville, Ala., as the ?Best All Around? place in the nation for African-Americans to live and raise families. Huntsville also carried the banner for Alabama as the state?s sole site listed.

And, if the truth can be told, Alabama A&M University can rightly stake its claim as a key factor in the magazine?s selection of the city to lead the list of 50 of the best cities conducive to the health, livelihood and overall development of blacks.

?Huntsville can be a uniquely nurturing place for black families with its high concentration of Black entrepreneurs, Black college graduates, and community spirit,? the editors noted. The magazine also indicated that numerous other magazines ?have discovered the city?s high-tech secrets? and had ?lavished praise? and other accolades.

Huntsville was also applauded for the technological innovation of its city school system, its low crime rate, affordability, median household income, median home price compared to the national average, employment opportunities, black history/culture, and the camaraderie and support afforded by black colleges Alabama A&M and Oakwood.

Other Huntsville distinctions cited by Family Digest include No. 1 in lowest property taxes; No. 5 in home prices; No. 6 in commute times; No. 5 in air quality; No. 4 in cost of living; and No. 10 in college graduates. The city also ranked in the Top 10 in the categories of affordability and safety.

Among the other cities making the highest scores on the Top 50 are Arlington, Tex.; Norfolk, Va.; Charlotte, N.C.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; Omaha, Neb.; Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; Winston-Salem, N.C.; and Tampa-St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Fla.

This 100-acre, $200-million project will further enhance Huntsville-Decatur-Athen's prominence as a small version of Raliegh-Durham-Chapel Hill.

I have been noticing the growth of the Huntsville-Decatur-Athens, AL area since the mid '80s. It has been since '98 that I have been there. Maybe I will have to take another look at the area.

In actuality, Huntsville already has the second largest technological research park (Cummings Research Park) to the Silicon Valley in California. Triangle Reseach Park in NC is third behind Huntsville.

Yes, that's true. Also, CRP was the first actual "research park". When I said, "a mini-RDU", I was speaking more in terms of population; HSV metro is about 335K-345K, RDU metro is 1M+.

Thank God For the Germans!

Where it not for Wheuner Von Braun & bunch of rocket scientists from the remnence of the Third Riech, Huntsville will be little more than a town about the size of Selma (23K or so) and Decatur would be the "big city".

"you bet-cho a$$". What Huntsville must do, though, is diversify. Huntsville can't rest on the lorals of defense/NASA alone. HSV is going pretty good in trying to diversify,,, but defense still rules. That needs to change. Defense needs to be no more than 40-50% of the economy I would contend,,,,, HOWEVER COMMA,,,,,, if you are going to put all of your economic development eggs in one basket,,,, at least make sure you are a center of research and/or administrative defense related jobs, not the low level manufacturing end,,,, which Huntsville is pretty good at, being a center of missile research and development and the general managerial HQs for many government defense contracts. Just keep bringing engineers, researchers and administrators to Huntsville I say!

I hear people make this statement all the time, and I wonder "what's the point?"

Were it not for the motion picture industry, Los Angeles, CA would be just another ORANGE GROVE!

If it were not for the steel industry, Birmingham, AL and Pittsburgh, PA would possibly be unheard of.

Nearly every city in this nation has had some type of industry to "jumpstart" it. Rocket and missile research just happen to be the "kick" that put Huntsville on the map.

It's stating a fact,,, nothing more, nothing less,,, giving people background on the history of a city. History of the city is the point.
 
Huntsville Lands IT HQ.

Even though the company is obviously heavily defense/government related,,, an HQ is an HQ and that's what you want to have relocate to your city,,, research and HQs and all the associated administrative jobs and decision makers. Also, pulling such a company from a metro area like Tampa-St Pete to tiny Huntsville can't be discounted. Outstanding.
