Hughes Brothers's Akira film under protest.

Just a few days ago, Tambay gave you the 411 update on the Akira adaptation being helmed by the Hughes Brothers and, after reading the posting, some of you aren’t too happy with the casting choices underway…understandably. Well, there’s a new online petition that’s been launched by racebending.com protesting the “whitewashingâ€￾ taking place with the film.

The website was initially developed in 2009 to protest the casting choices of The Last Airbender. Since then, the site has remained active in speaking out against similar situations. Films on their active campaign list include Akira, All You Need Is Kill, Runaways and The Hunger Games.

I think this was a good article for awareness because I strange to remake a Japanese film and have a Caucasian as the main character. It seems that the most obvious thing they would have done was find a Japanese American or hire a Japanese for the part. KUDOS, for the website bending.com for their efforts in protesting this!
 



Wow I didn't know they were doing an adaptation of Akira. I agree that it's stupid to cast a white person in an Asian role.

They redid the voices for the release of the animated one a few years back. They took out the casts that included the guy that did Leonardo in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cartoon with Johnny Bosh from Power Rangers.

There are plenty of well known Asians that they could put in this film. We had one in the recent Friday THe 13th remake and one on Just Jordan.
