HOWARD REQUIRES ALL FRESHMEN TO UNDERGO ENTREPRENEURIAL TRAINING
JOURNAL OF BLACKS IN HIGHER EDUCATION, 11-19-04
While blacks are more than 12 percent of the U.S. population, only 4 percent of all business firms in the nation are owned by blacks. And black-owned firms account for only 0.4 percent of all sales.
In order to foster increased entrepreneurship in the black community, the Ewing Marion Kaufman Foundation of Kansas City gave a $3.1 million grant to Howard University to start what is called an "entrepreneurial boot camp." On Saturday mornings this fall, freshman students at Howard are required to attend a series of lectures and workshops. The program is designed to demonstrate to Howard students that business opportunities exist in every field, no matter what course of study students choose to pursue in college.
The entire freshman class is divided into 54 groups and each must develop a business plan for a hypothetical entrepreneurial enterprise. The groups that come up with the best plan win scholarship money.
