How would you improve the SWAC?

stag,
This is from a couple of months ago. I passed it on to ASU's recruiter. Mind you, the school this kid is from has top-notch facilities and competes (and wins) in the top class in GA. But notice what their coach is saying....

Updates on Brookwood?s college prospects

Brookwood running back Demetre Ledlum led Gwinnett County in rushing this season with 1,430 yards and still has felt no love from the college recruiters.

?I haven?t talked to a soul about Demetre, which is amazing to me,? Brookwood coach Mark Crews said. ?You?ve got a guy who plays defensive back and receiver and was moved to running back and leads the county, and he plays basketball. I know he?s a good player. I hope something comes through for him. ? I feel like surely something will happen before it?s all over.?

Ledlum is not the fastest back out there or the tallest, but at 5-feet-10, 175 pounds and with 16 touchdowns? worth of gritty work, he would seem worthy of some attention.

Crews wonders if in Brookwood?s case the school does not attract many small school recruiters.

?A lot of smaller schools, for whatever reason, shy away from our kids,? Crews said. ?It could be they come and look at our facilities and they think our kids wouldn?t want to play there, [wouldn?t want to] come to a smaller stadium or different facilities. I don?t think that?s necessarily true. It?s perception, I think.?

Crews acknowledged that some recruiters might back off to some degree because so many in the Brookwood district have the financial means to pay their own way to colleges of their choice.

:smh:

That is sad MH.....but like I said in the post up there^^^^^ some of our coaches are lazy and if that school has a track record of not sending kids to smaller colleges then schools like us shy away. It even looks like even the 1-AA PWCs have not even tried to recruit this kid. So it must be a perception even from other non HBCU 1-AA schools that they need not try either. I wonder why is that. So I guess there is apathy all abound the 1-AA level.

Dammit..............................I ain't through.:goof:

Probably the most important reason that people are overlooking in this whole recruiting process is ACADEMIC PROGRAMS/DEGREES.............UNDER AND POST GRAD.

The education we get is great but in all honesty......................HOW MANY SWAC SCHOOLS CAN OFFER THE SHEER NUMBER OF DEGREED PROGRAMS THAT A 1A MID-MAJOR CAN OFFER.

There is more to this "recruiting" than the sport's.

JUST for Example:
A kid that want's to be a Heart Sergon or ARCHITECT ain't gonna come to JSU.:goof:
We don't have no program for that...................Get the picture.:goof:

Ya'll just looking at the sport's side instead of all sides.

Frat, I didn't even want to get into that. You are right. For those kids who are academic athletes.....some of our schools do not offer the degree programs that others do and it may be a deciding factor for some.

Ah @ JSU the degree for heart surgeon is called Pre-medicine (i.e Biology, Chemistry)
& the degree for Architect is called Technical Drafting

The SWAC needs better TV coverage of all sports. Too bad BET couldn't get us the coverage we truly needed with all those tape delays.

Yeah I was going to say you still have to go to Med school no matter where you go get your undergrad. Then get selected for a CV Surgical internship at the end of Med school. JSU would not prevent you from accomplishing that.

Now Technical Drafting is not Architecture. Can't be a Architect with that unless you got that Architectural degree from somewhere. BTW SU and PV offer Architecture as a major.

but realistically....a star in the making isn't thinking Architecture as a major also..too much time commitment

sad to say...we would have to "dummy down" our majors just to get some of these kids eligible..

I've seen too many transfers from major schools come down with transcripts that feature courses that resemble my middle school class schedule

Tape Delays? Those are horrible. With ABC, ESPN and CBS and Fox Sports having games all day and most of the evening, it would be hard to get viewership for a game that has been played already. The SWAC needs a contract that would allow viewers to see the games when they actually happen.

Man if I were a coach at an HBCU,I would tell a recruit the name of the school does not make you. God gave you the talent to play not the school. You make a name for the school.Just look at Kobe Bryant,Kevin Garnett and if the NBA had not passed the age requirement,Greg Odom(sp)would be playing in the NBA.Kobe did not go to Duke,Michigan.Kevin Garnett did not go to UCLA,Georgia Tech etc. Lebron James!! Those guys already got the talent those big schools did give them the talent.

NBA scouts don't and will not be prejudice against a phenomanal talent regardless of what school you are playing at. If an NBA scout know about a great talent in high school, they sure is hell will find out about a great talent in college.

That's their job to look at stats. And if those stats stick out they are coming to find out if you are the real deal. But hey if you want 30 seconds of fame,we can't give it to you, like a UCLA or Georgia Tech. But we do have a tradition and a network of alumni and a HBCU experience that can only be enjoyed when you are young. If you want an education and the experience of a lifetime, then come play for us,but hey if you want 30 seconds of fame then you have my blessings at the big time schools brotha.

I don't know what world you are living in, but the name of the school you play for does make a difference. Scouts judge players from low mid-majors harder than those from major schools. I know that's not fair, but they figure how does that guy matchup against players from the Big Ten, SEC, ACC or Pac-10? Those programs have a history of producing high draft picks. Now I know there have been some successful HBCU players, but those players had to prove themselves more often than not for scouts. The reason HBCU players are slighted is because they are not seen on television, there is little news coverage and they don't play against the same competition as those guys from major programs. I read an article in the Clarion-Ledger about Trey Johnson and the scout said he really could not judge him because he did hear much about him or saw him on television enough against major schools to make a decision. If the Tigers never made it to the NCAAs scouts would have never had a chance to see him play against a powerhouse school. Now they know what he can do against the big boys. A kid will always jump at the chance to play at a school where he has a great chance to get drafted. That kid won't care about going to an HBCU just because its a black school, he wants to be at a place where he can get seen and heard and not be silent.

stagga,
It could be because our recruiters have mindset like some of yall. And just write kids off.

I don't know how recruiting in football works, but in basketball, all D1A schools have 85 MAN recruiting days. I'm sure that football has some limitations on recruiting days also. With that being said, HBCU recruiters have to use those days as best as they can, so they may feel that they should only recruit kids they actually have a chance of getting.

So why would you attempt to recruit a kid who you think is going to a mid major?

Frat, I didn't even want to get into that. You are right. For those kids who are academic athletes.....some of our schools do not offer the degree programs that others do and it may be a deciding factor for some.

Another problem that I see is in the naming of our programs. The names of our program areas at most HBCUs are just too general for the students of today. For example, when most high schoool kids think of pre-med or med school prep, they don't think about biology. Unless its explicitly stated that a school has a pre-med program, they aren't going to go there. All a pre-med program is is biology. We just have to do a better job of naming our program areas to attract kids in on the academic side.
