How would you improve the SWAC?

But a SWAC coach can extol the virtues of the HBCU experience too.

"A collegiate career" is much more than having a shot at the playoffs.

Evidently not.
Cause all these second teir top black players are going to schools like G. Sou, Appy St, Montana, Etc.

They used to come to our's in droves.
New day people.....................The old " black Hook'em lines" don't work anymore with today's athelete.

If you Bosie State..................You say we can beat these guy's and crash the party.
At least WE got the chance to do that.

They have proved it 2 straight years even though last year was the only BCS bowl Bosie got into.

Man Boise state is ONE example from many examples. And they STILL didn't play for a championship.

Now what about the other 40+ non-bcs schools?

You said give an example and I did.

Since you wanna gloss over it here it is.
This is probably the jist of what's said when a school on that level is recruiting against us.

"Don't go to that school.
They play sub-standard ball and can't compete for a REAL CHAMPIONSHIP.
We play in D1............They D2 at best
.
They not even as good as the elite 1-AA schools"

And on and on. :shame:

Deny it all you want but that's what's going on in a nutt-shell.
Ya'll need to open your eye's and realize this ain't 1980 anymore.

Man if I were a coach at an HBCU,I would tell a recruit the name of the school does not make you. God gave you the talent to play not the school. You make a name for the school.Just look at Kobe Bryant,Kevin Garnett and if the NBA had not passed the age requirement,Greg Odom(sp)would be playing in the NBA.Kobe did not go to Duke,Michigan.Kevin Garnett did not go to UCLA,Georgia Tech etc. Lebron James!! Those guys already got the talent those big schools did give them the talent.

NBA scouts don't and will not be prejudice against a phenomanal talent regardless of what school you are playing at. If an NBA scout know about a great talent in high school, they sure is hell will find out about a great talent in college.

That's their job to look at stats. And if those stats stick out they are coming to find out if you are the real deal. But hey if you want 30 seconds of fame,we can't give it to you, like a UCLA or Georgia Tech. But we do have a tradition and a network of alumni and a HBCU experience that can only be enjoyed when you are young. If you want an education and the experience of a lifetime, then come play for us,but hey if you want 30 seconds of fame then you have my blessings at the big time schools brotha.

Man how many of these kids today will buy into that? These kids don't care about that HBCU experience like we did. These kids are growing up in a more diverse world than we did. Especially kids that are not poor and their families have them in decent schools. These kids require more effort than before so you better have something athletically to offer as well as academically. Just selling them on the black experience aint going to cut. Hell some of them will tell you that they get they everyday depending on what HS they go to. LOL. Believe me I hear it all the time when I at these HS talking up SU and the Naval Academy. And remind you this is on the academic end and not the athletes since I can't talk to them like that. Different types of youngsters these days. Just us being a HBCU is not the end all be all for these kids. We have more than that to sell. It's unfortunate it is that way but that's the hand we are dealt with. We now need to figure out a new game plan.

I know frat. These kids are strictly about the amenities a school can offer. But hey, you got to sell what you got. I know men who don't work, did not graduate from college, dating women with Phd's.These guys sell themselves for who they are.And really sometimes HBCU's are just gonna have to sell themselves for what they are. Give it a shot.

Yeah but those mid major schools go to some type of Bowl game and some of them are on TV more than we are. Boise State can tell a kid that at least we have a shot at a BCS game. Not to mention these kids see them getting mentioned on ESPN and talked about. So for those kids who get spurned by the Big 10, SEC, Big 12 and Pac 10 or ACC......this is viable alternative. Not to mention that the kid can see fan support. When you look at our HBCUs only a handful of us have real fan support. We know about the facility situation most of us have. So it is hard to get a kid to turn a Boise State down over us. So I kind of agree that one day if we can.......it would be nice to be able to be 1A if we could afford to be. I am like TP. I would like to see a 1-A HBCU conference and start building from there. It is a pipe dream I know.......but I think that would at least give us an opportunity to get some players. I think folks have gotten tired of the separate stuff. Black College Champs, SWAC Champs and that's it. I would hate to give up the BC date for a 1-AA playoff run........but if we could all move up , we wouldn't have too. That's why I support the research of a HBCU conference on the 1-A level. But the money is where we would stuggle. Those schools like Boise State get their alums to donate so they were successful. We know how hard it is to get our alums to do anything together.

Boise State is a school that will not lose a recruiting war with ANY SWAC school. They will get kids that schools like Oregon can't get. We are talking about schools like North Texas, TCU, UAB, Univ of Houston, etc. Schools that make it to BOWL games. Games that are on more than just BET, in the prime TV spots. Schools that may not be like Florida, but still have 10x the facilities as all SWAC schools. If they get to a recruit that is considering the SWAC, that's the EDGE they have. Unless you have experienced the HBCU experience, you won't miss it, so selling a kid on something you can't show doesn't make sense. You can show the kid a 40K seat stadium, top-notch weight room, rehab, training, workout reg., Bowl trophy, etc.

Thanks for taking over.
I thought it was simple to explain.

Co-Sign this up there ^^^^^^^^^^

THIS makes sense... not playing in the 1-AA playoffs. My point is being made by you and Sperm... A SHOT at the 1-AA playoffs do not give you much when you think of what we'd have to give up. The only option other than what we have now is going 1-A. Right now we need to stay put though.

so, because they may have "better" facilities, does that mean we don't suppose to try? that we don't suppose to sell what we do have? that we just suppose to settle for crumbs and be happy with it?

Explaining the HBCU experience to a kid who has no knowledge of it is very difficult. These kids don't care about that. They want to play for NCAA championships, they want to take advantage of great facilities, and they want to play for a powerful program. SWAC schools in football don't compete for NCAA championships and some of our schools need facility upgrades and that hurts the recruiting process.

Man these kids wanna play football. They don't care as much about championships as they do about playing time and being on TV.

and if they're good, having a shot at the next level.

but of course, you can't do any of that at one of these colored schools, with crappy facilities.
:scared:

We on TV.
The scout's come to see them.
Yet the masses still ain't comming even with the HBCU EXPERIENCE sell.

Why is it when the signing date comes................90% of them never even visit an HBCU campus or even have it on their "school's considered" list?

Again...................Step into 2007.

so, because they may have "better" facilities, does that mean we don't suppose to try? that we don't suppose to sell what we do have? that we just suppose to settle for crumbs and be happy with it?

Nobody isn't saying that MH. What we are saying that these kids for the most part are not listening to that anymore. I am sure our Coaches are selling that to them. But the reality is this.......for most of these youngsters we are their last choice. I didn't say don't try to sell them. I just said we need to help our schools financially and come up with a different strategy to sell our programs. If that means we have to research moving up then do it and do it right. I just think we are stuck in the past and what got kids to show up at HBCUs then does not work on the new school athlete. The sports landscape has changed. Used to be that only the real big schools got exposure and the smaller PWCs were in the same boat we were back then so we could get those kids. Well those mid major programs have stepped it up from facilities to financial support, not to mention the emergence of the way sports are covered now, these schools now get exposure. So it is not hard for a kid to hear of a Boise State, or Utah or any of these programs anymore.
Then you factor in that the black athlete now is more exposed to stuff than we were back in the day. Things have changed. So we have to change and figure out what the new game plan is to compete. We have to figure out why a kid will choose Applanchian St or Delaware or Ga Southern or Montana over our schools. What is that coach telling a kid differently than what we say.

stag,
This is from a couple of months ago. I passed it on to ASU's recruiter. Mind you, the school this kid is from has top-notch facilities and competes (and wins) in the top class in GA. But notice what their coach is saying....

Updates on Brookwood?s college prospects
By Carroll Rogers

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 01/16/07 12:47 PM

Brookwood running back Demetre Ledlum led Gwinnett County in rushing this season with 1,430 yards and still has felt no love from the college recruiters.

?I haven?t talked to a soul about Demetre, which is amazing to me,? Brookwood coach Mark Crews said. ?You?ve got a guy who plays defensive back and receiver and was moved to running back and leads the county, and he plays basketball. I know he?s a good player. I hope something comes through for him. ? I feel like surely something will happen before it?s all over.?

Ledlum is not the fastest back out there or the tallest, but at 5-feet-10, 175 pounds and with 16 touchdowns? worth of gritty work, he would seem worthy of some attention.

Crews wonders if in Brookwood?s case the school does not attract many small school recruiters.

?A lot of smaller schools, for whatever reason, shy away from our kids,? Crews said. ?It could be they come and look at our facilities and they think our kids wouldn?t want to play there, [wouldn?t want to] come to a smaller stadium or different facilities. I don?t think that?s necessarily true. It?s perception, I think.?

Crews acknowledged that some recruiters might back off to some degree because so many in the Brookwood district have the financial means to pay their own way to colleges of their choice.

:smh:

stagga,
It could be because our recruiters have mindset like some of yall. And just write kids off.

No ....................... Maybe it's because people in THIS CONFERENCE don't wanna see the TRUTH right in front of your eye's.

Now it's because coaches are writing off kids.
How the heck you gonna write someone off that don't even have one of "US" on their "visit" list?

These kids don't think like you and I did back in the 70's and 80's.
These kid's got their own mindset and playing for an HBCU just because it's an HBCU ain't even on their radar.

Heck.................I can use Eric Haw as an example.
He told the reporters here that before he got down here, the only HBCU's he knew about was GRAM first and Jackson State.
No history, Didn't know about the players that have come through.................NOTHING.

He didn't know anything outside of that until ...............as he said............Started reading up and researching the conference.

A BLACK KID.

BTW: Ed Blackmonds son can be a carbon copy of what that coach is talking about.
NO school recruited him because of his "size" even though he broke all kinds of records in High school.
We OFFERED HIM A FULL RIDE all he had to do was accept.
Mom and dad are JSU Alums.
He went to PENN.

stagga,
It could be because our recruiters have mindset like some of yall. And just write kids off.

No I don't think that is it. Maybe some coaches are lazy like that. I was listening to Alvin Shine Wyatt of BCC. He recruits all types of kids and does not shy away from contacting a recruit he knows will sign at Florida or Miami. But his philosophy is that the kid will keep him in mind if things don't work out. But we already know here on this board how we get all up in arms when a kid signs with a bigger program and then it doesn't work we at like we don't want them if they try to transfer. The white kids do it all the time with no fanfare.

I applaud Shine for his recruiting tactics and he has less of a budget than most of our SWAC schools. But he understands you have to try but he knows it is hard to convince a young man looking at a scholarship to Gainesville to say nah, I am going to head to BCC. Heck Vince Carter's folks are BCC alums and he went to UNC. It is just a hard sell. So some HBCU coaches hate to spend to much time after all those type of kids when they have limited budgets and need to be out trying to get kids they know they can sign. That's why our schools need our monies to help with that. I want our coaches to be able to have the funds to go recruit the big name players without shunning the ones that you know that you can get. Our coaches just usually decide to spend their money wisely in recruiting and not try to fly all over the country to recruit kids that they think they can not sign.

Then you have coaches like Pete who is lazy in the recruiting process and leaves it up his assistants to do all the work. At a HBCU you can't do that. The Head Coach has to show up in the homes of these name recruits. We aint Florida, Ohio State or USC who can send an assistant to recruit a big time athlete just on name alone.
