How the Legacy Bowl could ruin S.C. State football

South Carolina State has finally come clean about the Legacy Bowl.

Around a month after Florida A&M issued a statement denouncing the bowl, earlier this week, the school issued a press release confirming that it, along with the rest of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, are engaged in talks regarding a potential Legacy Bowl that would put the winner of the MEAC against the winner of the SWAC at the end of the 2011 season.

Of course, our sports department has been aware of the rumblings concerning the proposed bowl game for some time, but all interview requests by T&D Senior Sports Writer Thomas Grant Jr., directed to South Carolina State President George Cooper and Athletic Director Charlene Johnson were rejected. Considering the amount of effort that our sports department puts into covering South Carolina State athletics, especially over the last several seasons, and considering that likely around 90 percent of that coverage has been of a positive nature -- that's a credit to the job that coaches like Buddy Pough and Tim Carter have done in maintaining control of their programs, because when you mess up, we are going to write that you messed up, otherwise we are doing our readers a disservice -- the unwillingness of Cooper and Johnson to work with us is, to say the least, frustrating.

So, here's Johnson's statement, via an e-mailed press release.

"It is important that our student-athletes have a chance to play for a national championship, however the university and other schools in our conference must explore avenues that could generate additional revenues which would help us to field viable programs and be competitive," said Johnson. "Although the Legacy Bowl would take away the opportunity for our schools to participate in the playoffs, it would provide an avenue for us to gain significant additional funding.

S.C. State should do what is best for S.C. State. If you want to stay in the playoffs and the MEAC says no we are participating in the Legacy Bowl then you have two options.

Option 1-Suck it up and support your conference's decision and make money for your school and your conference.

or

Option 2-Leave the MEAC and become a independant member of the FCS (until you find another conference to join) to continue with your National Championship journey.

Either way, your alumni and fans need to be behind whatever decision your President makes.

Yeah they have the right to succeed just like TNSU.

A very biased report. Research suggest that his prermise of seeking a national championship is not the major reason student athletes choose to join an institution's athletic program.
 
Im tired of this whole S C State bullshit.... NOTE TO SC STATE: YOU AINT DID SHIT but beat MEAC teams. I find it funny how you come CLOSE to beating a team (who lost a week later) and you turn to world beaters. You aint made it out the first round. Start consistantly winning out of conference games then worry about the national picture. Right now you are nothing more than a MEAC champ (in a week MEAC conference)

Man you telling the truth. They brag like they have actually won something or at least made it to the second round. :lol: Almost winning does not account for jack. :lol:

TRUE! And let me add, With everything i'm reading from the meac reactions about playing that game they act like they are all that and so much better than the rest! I say fugg them and move on! We really don't need thay uppity azz! Think about it, Who will really be the fan draw anyway? The SWAC schools!!!

our opposition has nothing to with us thinking we are better than the SWAC. It has everything to do with us wanting to continue playing in the FCS playoffs.

We have nothing but respect for the SWAC. Just not for this game and what it prevents us from doing.

ya'll know we had nothing against JSU going to the playoffs except for the fact that teams that made it had to basically pay the NCAA to put on their show but this is getting commical. :lol:

if they want the playoffs that bad, then they need to leave the MEAC, join another conference, and continue to do THEM.

What get me is they actually blamming the SWAC for the Legacy Bowl and their involvment in it. The time to protest this and get all mad about it has long passed. We warned them on their chatboards for a full 2 years that their leaders were taking the MEAC in this direction and the whole time, their attitude towards us was we were some southern dummies that didn't know what we were talking about. :lol:

I can understand the desire to compete for the National title but what the MEAC folks fail to realize is that the advantage is actually in our corner. We have the best attended games and I feel that the Legacy Bowl can and will out draw the FCS Championship game. If we do that and can schedule and beat a PWC FCS school or two during the season. It would make the playoffs look like a joke.

Bolded and underlined for emphasis! These fools talk all the stuff about playing against the best, but will schedule D II schools and non-playoff schools (US) as a preparation for that? Doesn't that sound backwards as hell? There is nothing wrong with wanting to compete for a national title, but don't bullshit your fans into actually thinking you are doing that when what you are really doing is trying to balance the books and then sell that we compete for the national title when you are perceived to be nothing better than the SWAC's replacement .... and ten years after we left it, YOU STILL HAVE NOT IMPROVED ENOUGH TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY.

Go to Boone in October, beat their ass, then sit back and wait. But these tricks wouldn't even do that. Now, their presidents have basically said, "You ain't gonna do it because you feel we have to ask .... well, this is what we are gonna do!"

...and look at how they barely beat a "down" Grambling team in Orlando. It would have been great to see PV vs SCState this year. My money would have been on PV!

Bruh, let me remind you of something. Southern built their rep in the late 90's by going to the Heritage Bowl. JSU would win the SWAC or go 9-3 and go go the playoffs as an at-large team and get NO RESPECT. Yet, SU would go to the Heritage Bowl and look like the best team in BCF. No one cares about the playoffs. JSU has been there and done that! We were better than some of those playoff teams but we were not better than the top 4..which we always had to play. You all act like SCState is on to something because they ALMOST won a playoff game. In JSU's last playoff game, we ALMOST won too. That got us nothing. All it got us was SU going to the HB and looking like world beaters.
