The name says it all
A key figure from the Harris County Sports Authority was in attendance on Friday at the Media Day. After being spotted, I asked him about his interest in the SWAC and he mentioned the city is interested in some of the championships.

Houston is good sports town. The Swac can't go wrong move there. The support from black business and the black community and the Houston Community as a whole will be there. They should move some of there Championships over for a test market. I have heard that Houston is trying to get the Spring Sports Championships. The TSU arena is one of the best in Conference. The Swac fan base is there. They have a lot of facilities to choose from. The Media and Sponsorship market is loaded. The Swac will make some money....................
 



I hope so, imagine playing the championship at Minute Maid Park? The track championships would probably be at Rice and the softball would be at UH or Memorial Park.
 
Man that's just the crap I'm talking about. They announce LaMont Sanford and total complete silence. Announcer returns and says "I guess we have tech. difficulties with coach Thomas".

This guy is a Fool! In the Biblical means of the word.

Once he realised which end of the phone to speak into he had nothing to say.

Well we have a great punter, we have the tools to win.

Little Bill's interview lasted about 2 min.

P.V.'s Coach Whit stayed on for about 30 min. pumping P.V., sending out recruiting notes to the D/FW area as well as Houston. He used this media opportunity to it's fullest. He is going to kill Thomas Recruiting in state!

What does Houston want with Div I-AA college sports when they got pro sports and all kinds of other attractions up the arse? Houston's beyond such. Birmingham and the SWAC are a perfect fit, plus Birmingham is a "black" town about to move all the SWAC activities to a domed facility.

It is simple. It about cities interested in generating revenue dollars for their city. Both places would have positive and negative aspects in their bids for hosting the SWAC Championship Game. To be honest. Houston is interested in biding for as many events as possible. The city is know committed to generating revenue through a tourist mechanism.

It is the same reason they city has bid and land several events, including the Olympic Games, the Super Bowl, MLB Baseball All-Star Game, NBA Basketball All-Star Game, Big 12 Championship Game, Houston Bowl (Conference USA vs. Big 12 and now SEC vs. Big 12, NCAA Final Four, the Bayou Classic and now the SWAC in its various sporting events.

It maybe a difficult decision as far as what Birmingham has done for the SWAC with its commitment to program. But it will be simple decision when it based on the financial commitment a city decides to commit to the SWAC.
 
Just for the record its' not about Black or White. Maybe Green will be the right color. I do believe Houston has the Green at this time. Maybe you are not familiar with the over 900 millions dollar that the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority has facilitated with stadiums in Houston. In other words there pockets are deep. Houston has every thing in place. Just take your green to Houston. I read a survey that stated Houston is a good city for blacks' to live.
 
remember, Birmingham was Rudy's deal, not Vowells. With Oliver Luck, head of the sports authority ready to roll, your talking about bigtime money being thrown into the fray.

Luck said he has been talking with Vowells for six or seven months, interetsting. And the TSU and PV game in hoops could be played in the new arena.
 
In order for the SWAC Championship game and tournament to be successful in Houston... Texas Southern, Prairie View, Grambling and Southern must all four be successful in football and basketball (excluding Grambling). For Texas Southern and Priarie View, I define success as two to three consecutive years competing for the SWAC West title and continue their momentum in basketball.

When the conference was in New Orleans, was the SWAC being courted to move into the Superdome like it is by the Houston Sports Authority? This makes all the difference in the world.
 
I'm glad to see Houston show some interest in the SCG. Birmingham needs some real competiition.

There is no reason to just give Birminggham the game when it only draws only 30K a year. We surely can do better than that.
 
Houston will be a good place for the Spring Championships and the SWAC Headquarter. The football championship should stay in one of the others location Jackson MS., New Orlean. Houston should be a last choice for football. Basketball has proven to make money in Houston. Track has proven to make money in Houston. Football with the right line up from the SWAC can make money too. The other sports have to be develope into money making sports. Houston is growing city in sports. I heard Houston is line up the money for the SWAC. Most Swac fan like going to houston. Good Shopping area for the sisters. Good night life for the brothers.

What's your reasoning why Houston should not host the SCG? Currently this the marquee event of the SWAC and definitely should attract more than the 20-30K it does in Birmingham.

I also think this game has to be in a Dome becasue of the unpredictable weather in Dec.

Yeah, I know. In actuality, Birmingham doesn't stand a chance in haties of fending off a bid by Houston to cherry-pick SWAC events because Birmingham lost the initiative in the 1960s (basically to Atlanta and it was downhill from there).

Birmingham is just now recovering (starting basically in the 90s and especially after the rude awaking of no more Iron Bowl) and is playing catch up trying to do everything to land events, HQs, championships, any and everything, which is why it got the SWAC in the first place, landed Olympic Soccer venues twice, held on to the SEC baseball tournament, still has some SEC/NCAA basketball scraps and has constantly been bidding (and losing mostly) on any and all major athletic events short of things like the Superbowl or bowl games (since losing it's bowl game in the late 80s/early 90s).

Hopefully with the dome coming on line and downtown entertainment district picking up momentum to help enhance B'ham civil rights/museum district and general tourism, Birmingham will be more competitive and be able to fend off the approaches to the SWAC from Houston. Hopefully there is enough corporate backing in B'ham to back the SWAC although losing HealthSouth is brutal.

The second largest football game attended in Astrodome history was Texas Southern vs Grambing of over 60K+.

you've seen it in hoops, your about to see it in baseball and football is soon to come.

problem is, GSU is competitive and winning but their not a draw unless it's some far out place.
