Hmm article on theadvocate

Gram playing Alcorn in the old red river classic, 1st SWAC matchup, and JSU ain't going nowhere....................I'll bet money on that.

Alcorn and JSU may not count in the standings but GRAM may as well cut the 4 free game's down to 2 cause Alcorn and JSU will have 2 of those 4 slot's in 2008.:smash:
We will see.

I too believe that JSU and Alcorn will play Grambling since the option is there. However, I think all programs will be fine either way. Once again, I am against playing teams that don't count. We have enough regional rivals, and MEAC teams to make our seasons interesting. JSU already has 2 out of 5 non-confernce games signed for 2008. I personally hope that we can keep Delta State is this brings a good crowd. I would like to resume our series with 1.) SC State, 2.) A&T 3.) Howard or 4.) Hampton in that order.

Alcorn and Grambling playing in Shreveport is beyond dumb. I just don't get it. If GSU moves their game there, fine but Alcorn should not follow suit.

We will see.

Yeah but considering the fact that JSU and Alcorn are GSU's biggest home games aside from Homecoming, you can't say that GSU is going to turn down crowds of 18K. JSU fans and Alcorn fans certainly make the trip. Unless you get ULL or someone to come there, no other school will give you the same support as JSU and Alcorn. You know we dayum near fill that visitors side.

I like how Broadway is thinking but this is certainly a transitional year for Grambling. At least he seems to realize that. I can't see GSU being ahead of SU in 2007.

?One thing about Grambling: They?re high on expectations and short on patience. So we?ve got to win,? said Broadway, who coached North Carolina Central, a Division II school, to the black college national title last season.

Grambling, however, has to replace eight starters on offense and six on defense. Broadway said the Tigers will welcome 45 new players and have 90 in preseason camp next month.

?We?re starting from scratch,? Broadway said.

Ey TP

Are JSU, GSU, SU, etc., the only schools that can have transitional years? I'm seeing this word being used quite often now from a bunch of you; you know like to "excuse" the upcoming season(or prior) if there's no success. Now I agree that if a program goes through a coaching change or whatever, there may be a learning curve that could possibly take a year to overcome. But from years past involving other schools that went through something of the like; when "transitional year" came out they mouth, some folks whatn hearing it.

Wsup with that?

No, any team that does an complete over haul gets a transitional year. Normally, JSU just promotes the OC or DC...that is not transitional. Grambling promoting Spears was not transitional. Look how many new players GSU is bringing in. Bell admittedly wanted to tear down JSU football and rebuild it to his liking. What other schools have gone through something similar? You have had pretty much the same DC for years so even though, you have brought in new HC's and OC's occasionally, your defense has remained the same and your player personnel has not changed drastically. You can't expect a team to come in with ALL new coaches, new scheme, and essentially 22 new starters to step on the field and perform like they have been together for 2-3 years. That's in football 101. That is why JSU fans did not expect Bham last year. We knew we needed one year under our belts to account for all of the change. SU has not had a transitional year but when you are a mainstay at the top of the SWAC and your HC has had 13-14 winning seasons, you have down years. Only JSU has had experimental years. :D

Oh okay I see now; I may have gotten promoting Coaches like Spears, Hughes, etc. confused with the transitional year thing. But I see what'cha sayin and I agree with'ya.

We'll see though.

Transitional year my ARSE.:goof:
Comegy had his free year last year.:p

Time for result's in 2007.
No blown leads, better execution, and more cohesiveness between players on both sides of the ball.

You have to remember that this time all the onferance games will already be already scheduled and everyone will know what counts and don't count. You won't have that mess where the game counted for 1 team and not for the other and they are playing eachother. Why everyone thinks that all the Swac teams will be able to schedule a Meac team for a game. The year for that 12 game schedule is gonna be harder for teams to schedule 5 non confernace games (teams outside the conferance).

Everyone can't schedule a MEAC team but JSU can. We have never had that problem. Ask AAMU...there is a pecking order. :smash: It could be pride, but I personally can't see JSU having a hard time scheduling 4-5 non-conference teams unless we wait until the 11th hour to try. I am almost certain that Braddy is gonna try to bring in another D2 for the first home game...that seems to be his MO (what does MO stand for?? ...LOL) We will only need two more games and I don't see that as a major problem. I just hope we don't go the 1-A route. I am almost sure that one of the two remaining games will be a trip to Grambling whether I agree or not. I can't see GSU passing up a 18K game. That is the purpose of not having a strict 7 game format. So we really only need one more.

Dayum, i forgot the year when you could play a game that counted for one team but not the other...that was some ish right there...:lmao:

I am against playing conference teams on the non-conference slate. There are other teams other than MEAC and SWAC teams in FCS/I-AA and there are plenty of FBS/I-A and good D2 schools to play. Schools that have trouble scheduling games have trouble because they don't plan in advance. Many schools fill openings two to three years in advance, but some of our schools wait too long. Jackson State has done a good job preparing for 2008. We know we have Tenn State and Northwestern State. I heard rumors that Southeast Louisiana, another Southland team, might be coming to Jackson in 2008 and if the Delta State game goes well this season, I could see them on sked in 2008.

I agree.
But remember the last firestorm caused here by this type of thinking. :emlaugh:

Tradition seems to outweigh whether a game is for conference standings or not.

Yep, and that is why these games will be played. In all honestly, only JSU-SU-Alcorn-Grambling should be played when not on rotation. The others ....there is no point.

As long as they got rid of the 9-game mandate and allow us to choose and have options, I don't care.
For JSU and Alcorn, there is NOT a better option out there than GSU and Southern...and VICE VERSA (the most important point). However, I would STILL rather schedule them as a last resort. I like variety and if we can replace SU and Gram with Howard and A&T, I am all for it.

I agree. Also, it gives many of us a chance to BUILD some rivalries with teams not in the SWAC.

I think TSU, PV should do a Rice, Houston, Sam Houston, SFA,or Texas State rotation for non-conference games. These would become regional rivalries.

If you have GOLD, why trade it for silver. :noidea: If it not broke, don't fix it. SU-Gram-Jsu-Alcorn MUST PLAY EVERY SEASON. Thats what the fans want. Don't take that away.

There is a simple remedy. The SWAC could allow conference teams to meet in classics only, no home-and-home. The traditional profitable matchups like Jackson State-Southern, Grambling-Alcorn, and Jackson State-Grambling could easily attract promoters willing to put up the money for the two teams to play at a neutral site. That means only the profitable matchups would remain and we wouldn't have everyone scheduling conference teams for non-conference games like we did before the 9-game mandate.

so, "in all honesty", you have no sense of fairness, since you say "only" certain teams should be allowed to play certain teams, when they're not scheduled to play as conference opponents.

sorry, but I believe the rules should be for ALL schools to follow, not just some of them.

TP,

MO stands for modus operandi, which literally means the mode you operate. Better stated, it means the way you do your business or do things period.

Each school should be given the option of playing ONE conference school not in their division and only one.
That would perhaps be the fair and logical thing to do for now.
It's very difficult for most SWAC schools to make up the revenue losses if their money games are taken away from them. At least they'll have one of those games still on their schedule.

All other games should be non-conference games.

Adding "allowed" and "rules" to my sentence totally changes it. The point here is that there are no rules. This is the SWAC. :lmao:

Jay Rob, I sincerely agree with you. That would make it fair. Now the problem will be is the money games will be the same schools TP mentioned. So it will still be deemed unfair if SU and JSU decided to play with that one game option, then no other East school could schedule SU or no other West school could schedule JSU. So you would have folks still up in arms.
